Can’t remember what I did for breakfast, I think I went to the restaurant by the old town gate again for noodles, there were no pictures so I presume I just had fried noodles. I did get some nice photos of the main street of the ancient city in the sunshine before the tourist hordes descended. Back to my guest house for another cup of coffee and then I was on my way to Xichong Beach, which is meant to be the prettiest one in the Dapeng Peninsula. The journey involved two bus rides. The first was fairly quick and retraced part of the journey I had made from Dapeng centre to the ancient city. Nothing exciting and the streets were still deserted. From that bus stop it was a short walk to the next one ... read more

Well I had a lot planned for today, but it didn't work out as planned. After waking up and getting myself sorted, I headed out to the reganmian place for breakfast. The noodles were even better than last time. I didn't think that was possible. I could eat every meal there, but force myself to branch out a bit. I headed back to my place for a post breakfast coffee and to make a rough plan for the day. I had a look on my map app and found a couple of places nearby that I wanted to visit. The first was Dongshan Temple that was located really close to the ancient city. It only took me about ten to fifteen minutes to walk there, but when I got there, I could see it was boarded ... read more

I must have still been in work mode, as I woke up early. I was glad though as I wanted to explore the old town early, as I wasn't sure if hordes of visitors would descend on the place with it being a public holiday. The ancient city was built in the late 14th century and it served as a naval base to counter pirates coming from the South China Sea. It's weird that the old town is so close to the beach as it doesn't feel like it is, I think it's because I can't see the coast from the old town only the mountains making it feel more rural than coastal. I left my guesthouse and then had to immediately return as I had forgotten a mask. Take two, I headed out again. It ... read more

National Day holiday, seven days off work, something I have been looking forward to a lot. To make life easier, I decided to stay in Shenzhen, but go to Dapeng, which is pretty far east. This city just sprawls and sprawls. It would take me about two and a half hours to get there, plus I thought it would take longer due to the terrible holiday traffic. First it was the subway, which I thought would be the easiest part, but turned out to be the most annoying. Due to Covid (I know the rest of the world has got over it, but not China), Guangdong province (or maybe just Shenzhen) has a policy where you have to scan in places, but of course the system only works if you have a mainland ID number, normally ... read more

Holiday weekend and I was spending the last day of it exploring a different part of Shenzhen. We started at O Power, which was built in the 1980s and had been Huazhong power plant. This power plant had been used to light the whole OCT (Overseas Chinese Town) area. Since the power plant has been closed, it has been transformed into an art and culture centre. We spent about half an hour or so looking around the place. I probably wouldn't have chose to visit it myself, so it was nice to see somewhere different. I spent a while wandering around the grounds. The first part I walked around had been transformed into a play park. There weren't many kids around, but there were a few adults chilling on the swing seats. It was really hot ... read more

Shenzhen Museum is located in the heart of Shenzhen in the Civic Centre complex at Futian. Booking a ticket online was fairly straight forward using their WeChat account/mini programme, I can't remember which one it was, and the WeChat translate function. Getting in was pretty straight forward too, health code check, green arrow (travel code) check, and then ticket check. I don't think the woman even looked at my ID. I was happy to get out of the heat and into the air conditioned building. The museum has three floors and I started on the ground one. The first exhibition that I had a look around was a temporary exhibition, since it was a temporary one, there were no English explanations and not even the name was in English so I was pretty clueless as to ... read more

Dongmen Pedestrian Street wouldn't be my usual pick of place to go. Maybe if I was visiting a new town or city and had an hour to kill, but shopping streets don't really do it for me and there is a long list of places I would have preferred to visit in Shenzhen. But when I saw that there was a Worldwide photowalk happening there, I decided to sign up as it would be something different and not somewhere I would venture off my own bat. I had a little time to kill before the photowalk started, so I had a bit of a look around, walking up and down a couple of streets. It was hot, loud and bright, definitely a bit of an assault on the senses. I headed over to the meeting point ... read more

Another day, another hike. I have to get them in before the weather gets too hot and humid and I retreat to curl up under my air con for the summer. Since it was a holiday, I thought the trails might be busy. I headed from the subway up to the park entrance. I was surprised that there wasn't too many people around. The guard actually checked to see that my health code was green, which I'd never had done there before. They must be being stricter because it is a holiday. The walk up the road to the start of the trails was quite busy, but not too bad. Just before reaching the trails, I popped into my favourite public toilets in the whole of China, still spotless. I wish everywhere was like this. There ... read more

I headed back to Nanshan to try a different hiking route. On a side note the toilets at the start of the hike are probably the nicest and cleanest I've come across in all my time in China. I decided to take the trail up that I had taken down the first time I was here. I did think that this route was easier, but going up I changed my mind. There were some pretty lanterns near the start of the trail to mark the new year. It was only a few steps to the first pavilion, which since I'd just started, I didn't take a break at. Since it was the holiday, it was busier than the last time I was here. I hiked up and up the stairs were pretty steep and each set ... read more

Shenzhen Bay Park has its own metro station so is very easy to get to. I had been in the area before, but since the weather that day had been pretty bad, I'd skipped having a look around the park. Since the weather was better today, I decided to stretch my legs with a nice walk in the park. When I came out of the metro station it was quite busy with people having a look at the view and deciding where they wanted to go. The park stretches for 13 kilometres, I though it was 16km, and is a popular spot for walking and cycling. There was some stuff to the north, but since that wouldn't have been much of a walk and I didn't want to retrace my steps. I headed south. I had ... read more
