I came across Luohu Greenway online and it looked like a nice walk. There wasn't too much information online about it, but with the help of my map app, I was able to find the start. I made my way to Buxin subway station and then walked for about 20 minutes or so to the start of the trail. It was a nice sunny day as I made my way up the hill and along a very quiet road to the start of the trail. I was surprised at how quiet the area was, as there were a few communities of high rise apartment buildings. Maybe everyone was inside suffering from Covid as this was roughly when Shenzhen hit the peak. The entrance to the greenway surprised me as I had imagined it to be totally ... read more

Looking outside, the weather didn't look too good, but I had made my mind up that I was heading to Dameisha beach. My thinking was that the cooler weather would make the walk more enjoyable and that there would be less people. Getting there was a bit of a process. First I took the subway for a few stops and then got on the bus. The bus was rather annoying as I am used to just scanning my card when getting on, but on this one you have to tell the conductor where you are going so that they can calculate the fare and then scan your card. Seems like a time wasting exercise, when you could just scan on and off like in other places. The bus journey took about an hour and I got ... read more

I had been meaning to visit Nantou Ancient City for ages and the new subway line made it much more convenient. It was late afternoon by the time I got there and walked through the old city gates. Since it was a Saturday and the weather was nice and cool, it was packed. We headed off to the backstreets that surround the main area, as it was quieter here. There seemed to be no remnants of the ancient city here. Instead just regular daily life was on display, lots of little stores selling daily essentials, small restaurants, washing hanging out, alleyways filled with e-bikes and motorised carts, and people going about their day to day things. After circling around, we ended up on the main street, which was filled with people. I didn't really like it ... read more

A major hassle had just been removed this weekend. We no longer needed Covid tests for the subway. So to celebrate I decided to head to Tanglangshan to do a small hike. It had been a while since I'd done one, so I picked this as it sounded fairly easy. From Taoyuancun Station it was a short walk to the start of the trail. I don't know if it was because I got there a little later in the morning or because restrictions were being lifted but it was pretty busy. There are two paths up the mountain (from this point): the road or steps. I opted for the steps. There was a guard making people scan in on the healthcode app, but being a foreigner I was ignored (if only this happened more often). The ... read more

Another week, another park. This week I had decided to visit Donghu Park as I had read that it was a smaller, older park and not too far from where I live. The subway journey was uneventful and from there it was about a ten minute walk to the park. I flashed my green code at the security guard on the way in and came to a nice circle of palm trees surrounding a grassy area. Since it was still fairly early, it was empty, but I could imagine later on it would fill up as it looked like a nice area to chill and have a picnic on with family or friends. Nearby, there was a path leading to the lake and since the views were nicer, I walked along the side of the lake. ... read more

While looking for things to see and do in Shenzhen, I came across the graffiti wall at Honghu Park. There was only limited information about it and all several years old, so I didn’t know if it even still existed. However, the park looked nice, so it would be a nice place for a stroll even if the wall was no longer there. The park is really accessible too as it is only a short walk from a couple of metro stations. I got there around 9:30-10 am and there were a quite a few people there, but it didn’t feel too busy. I’d read that the graffiti wall was at the back of the park so made my way there. I think the directions I’d read where from the main entrance, which I hadn’t used. ... read more

A new subway line opening means it’s easier to explore another district in Shenzhen and the opening of Line 14 means that Pingshan has become a lot more accessible. I think the subway journey there took about 40 to 50 minutes, which wasn’t too bad. We alighted the subway at Kengzi Station as there were some old Hakka villages around that we wanted to explore. It was a cloudy, warm and humid day, the temperature is starting to drop, but I wish it was a little cooler and that the humidity would disappear. It was a short walk to the first Hakka village, and I was rather surprised at how seriously the surrounding housing estate was taking Covid precautions. The security guards had hand held devices to scan our green codes. Mine must show pretty much ... read more

I had seen an art exhibition advertised at the Guangming Culture and Art Centre that I liked the sound of so headed there on my last day of freedom (the National Day Holiday week). I took the subway to Fenghuang Town on line 6 and from the station it was about a 10-15 minute walk to the museum. I was a little confused when I arrived as the complex is quite big and there were two entrances opposite each other and I wasn’t sure which one was the art museum. Luckily, I picked the right one. I have no idea what the other one was for, but it was pretty busy. After checking all my various codes, I was allowed in. I had been able to book a ticket for the (free) general museum online. However, ... read more

Can’t remember what I did for breakfast, I think I went to the restaurant by the old town gate again for noodles, there were no pictures so I presume I just had fried noodles. I did get some nice photos of the main street of the ancient city in the sunshine before the tourist hordes descended. Back to my guest house for another cup of coffee and then I was on my way to Xichong Beach, which is meant to be the prettiest one in the Dapeng Peninsula. The journey involved two bus rides. The first was fairly quick and retraced part of the journey I had made from Dapeng centre to the ancient city. Nothing exciting and the streets were still deserted. From that bus stop it was a short walk to the next one ... read more

Well I had a lot planned for today, but it didn't work out as planned. After waking up and getting myself sorted, I headed out to the reganmian place for breakfast. The noodles were even better than last time. I didn't think that was possible. I could eat every meal there, but force myself to branch out a bit. I headed back to my place for a post breakfast coffee and to make a rough plan for the day. I had a look on my map app and found a couple of places nearby that I wanted to visit. The first was Dongshan Temple that was located really close to the ancient city. It only took me about ten to fifteen minutes to walk there, but when I got there, I could see it was boarded ... read more
