The Seoul Trail or Dulle-gil (서울 둘레길) is a 157 kilometre trail that loops around the city of Seoul. The eight trails were connected late last year, to form the Seoul Trail. I think some of trails existed individually under different names before. I have previously a few parts of the trail on purpose and by accident. There isn't a whole lot of information about the trail in English, only a couple of blogs, and one is basically a cut and paste of the original website. In the summer, a friend picked me up a map and stamp book from City Hall in Seoul. I think you can get them somewhere near Dobongsan, too, but I'm not 100% sure. Anyway, now it was time to dig them out and crack on with my mission to complete ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Jeollanam-do » Suncheon November 15th 2015

Our lovely pension owner gave us a lift to the bus station and we bought tickets to go to Suncheon. I think the ticket cost around six or seven thousand won. We almost ended up on the wrong bus, but the staff at the station were lovely and told us which spot our bus would pull up into. My friend remarked about how country this place felt. It is a real contrast to the city. The bus journey took about an hour and we were on one of those luxury VIP style buses with big padded reclining seats. And there were only three of us on the bus. We arrived in Suncheon at about 9:30 am. My friend was happy as there was a Dunkin' Donuts in the bus station. Apparently, they don't have them in ... read more

I had arrived late in Gwangju the night before. We were staying in a hostel that was about a ten minute walk away from thr bus station. We had a private room at the hostel and it was small, but clean and cosy. Breakfast was included, so we headed up to the kitchen to make that, eggs, bread, plastic cheese, hash browns and hot dogs, it made a nice change from the usual hostel breakfasts of eggs, jam and bread. We headed to the bus station and used one of the machines to buy tickets. I love those machines, no need to interact with a human. I can't remember how much the ticket was, but it was less than a man won. We had a bit of a look around the bus station before boardung our ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Seoul » Gangnam October 31st 2015

With a few hours to spare in the Gangnam area, I decided to head to these royal tombs. They are easily accessible from Seollung subway station, which is connected to both Line 2 and the Bundang Line. The tombs are about a five minute walk and you can see the car park first, which lets you know you are in the right place. The entrance fee was 1,000 won, a complete bargain. I paid my entrance fee and picked up an English leaflet. I have been to the royal tombs in Hwaseon, so I was curious to see how similar these ones would be. The trees were looking lovely with the autumn colours coming through. I came across the first tomb that of King Seongjong, he was the 9th ruler of the Joseon Dynasty. I was ... read more

We left Seoul early, the traffic wasn't too bad and it didn't take us long to reach the park. The weather was gorgeous, I couldn't believe that it was almost the end of October. We walked along the long strip of restaurants, cafes, and shops that lead to the entrance to the park. We paid the entrance fee, I think it was a couple of thousand won and went in. We walked along this gorgeous path that was lined with trees in all their autumnal glory. I love autumn time, all the beautiful colours that are all about. We walked along the path, and after a while we reached the Yongmunsa temple. The temple was originally built during the Silla Dynasty. It suffered a lot of damage during the Korean War. The temple is known for ... read more

I have been to the temple at the top of the mountain before, a few years ago. However last time I cheated and took a minibus part way up the mountain, so I only had to walk for about 10-15 minutes to reach the temple. Coming back to Namhae, I couldn't resist heading back to this temple, as it has some of the most stunning views I have seen in Korea. Seeing as I a bit fitter than I was a few years ago, I was more than happy to do the hike (also there was no other option this time). We left our pension around 6 am, it was only about a ten minute drive to the starting point for our hike. I don't know why I bothered packing my headtorch as it was really ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Gyeongsangnam-do » Jinju October 9th 2015

We travelled south overnight and arrived in Jinju in the early hours of the morning. We headed to Jinhangho Lake first. It was really quiet and we were the only people about. I head down to the lake and was pretty underwhelmed by it. I took a few photos of the misty lake, more to just say that I had been as it wasn't too pretty. I sat and ate some breakfast while reading my book for a bit. Then went for a bit of a wander around. There was a kid's amusement park, which seemed a bit eerie as there was no one around. I did get to see the sun rising over Jinju, which was pretty. We were by Jinhangho Lake for a couple of hours and for me, it wasn't really worthy of ... read more

Busan International Film Festival is held every year, normally in early October. This year, the 20th film festival ran from the 1st to 10th October. This was the third time I have been to the film festival. The first time I just turned up and bought tickets on the day, last year I was slightly more organised, and this year, I think I cracked it. The film catalogue is released on online in mid-September. so you can see what films take your fancy. This is a huge selection, there are films from all over the world, with a special focus on Asian film. There is also a great timetable that shows what film will be shown on each day at each cinema. I find this invaluable when it come to planning. The cinemas are Busan Cinema Centre, ... read more

Asia » Japan » Osaka » Osaka September 29th 2015

28th Sept: We arrived back in Osaka and decided to go get some dinner. My friend suggested an area, close to Namba that we should visit for dinner. So we hopped on the subway and headed there as it was only a couple of stops away. The area was called Dobutsuen-mae and is located in Shinsekai, which means new world. It is an old neighbourhood, which was built in 1912. Since there was minimal redevelopment after World War II, the area became one of the poorest in Japan. It is also rumoured to be dangerous. Not that my friend told me any of this, only that the neighbourhood was really old school filled with old men drinking and playing games. It did look a bit ghetto when we emerged from the subway station, but not too ... read more

Asia » Japan » Nara » Nara September 28th 2015

I slept so well last night, my bed was like a little cave with the curtain as it blocked loads of the light out. I even managed to fall asleep with the main room light on. Despite there being only one shower on the floor in the hostel there was no queue, so it didn't take too long to get ready. A cup of green tea and we were off. My friend had found this place online that was close to Umeda Station, where we would be getting the train. It was a beautiful morning and we had a good walk looking for the cafe. There were lots of people on their way to work and my friend commented that people from Osaka are always in a hurry compared to those in Tokyo, as they jaywalk ... read more
