Heading up from Abel Tasman I briefly stopped off at Te Waikoropupu Springs (aka Pupu Springs which is slightly easier to say!) - amazingly clear freshwater springs. From there I continued north to Collingwood, one of the last 'towns' before you get to Cape Farewell, the northern most tip of the South Island. When I arrived at the hostel in Collingwood the owner told me that he and the other 5 guests were off to Wharariki Beach on the west coast that afternoon and asked if I want to come too - it was somewhere I planned to go anyway and, quite liking the idea of walking with others for a change, I said yes. What I hadn’t factored in was the weather... if I had it may have changed my mind ;0) I’ve actually done ... read more

After finishing the Queen Charlotte Track I decided to give my feet a rest! So, it was back on the bus again, this time going west to Nelson. I ended up in the same hostel as a girl I'd walked the last day of the Queen Charlotte Track with so we spent a fun few days doing the 'sights' of Nelson together - we went to the cinema (all in the cause of resting our feet) and got accosted by Darth Vader in the foyer (the latest Star Wars had just come out), had a trip to the World of Wearable art museum (is amazing what you can do with sparkle and plastic ;0)) and the Vintage car musuem. Oh and sat drinking lots of coffee and eating Shortbread (freebie for the hostel we were staying ... read more

I arrived at the ferry terminal in Welly only to bump into a couple I'd met in Taupo. Small world. Turns out we were planning on walking the Queen Charlotte Track on the same days and staying at the same hostel in Picton. And it was a lurvely hostel - free tea/coffee, free breakfast, free pick ups from the ferry (only 500m away but excellent for those of us with so many bags!!) and best off all - free apple crumble and ice cream every night.... yummmmmmmmmmy. Could have stayed here a while, almost did.... ahhhh On my first day in Picton I went on the post boat around the Marlborough Sounds and discovered 2 things - the Sounds are flooded rivers rather than glacial valleys and despite the number of homes around the Sounds comparatively ... read more

I arrived in Wellington on a beautifully sunny day... at a bus station that seemed miles from anywhere. In true backbacker style I then ermm jumped in a taxi with a girl I'd met on the bus and headed off to the hostel. I did consider public transport but well... I only had a day in Wellington but that was enough to tell me two things, (1) - that I'd really like living and working here and (2) - that I wasn't ready to get a job yet! The city is small, windy but beautifully set around the harbour... lots of hills though so think I'll end up very fit living here. We did manage to get to the cinema - apparently revamped to the sum of $5million for the Lord Of the Rings premier - ... read more

I'd wanted to come to Napier for three things - the Art Deco town itself, a Hawke's Bay Wine tour and to see the Gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers. In the end I only managed one of the three.... Mothers Day seemed to interfere with anyone wanting to run a wine tour and the Gannets have mostly all sensibly left for warmer climates over the winter!! Looks like I'll be back later in the year! Napier, a port on the east coast, is famed for its Art Deco buildings.... and there are lots of them. An earthquake in 1931 (measuring some 7.9 on the Richter Scale) flattened much of the city centre. The people of the town took this as an opportunity to rebuild in a new style and hence much was rebuilt in the Art ... read more

I arrived at Taupo hoping to do the Tongariro Crossing the next day -unfortunately but my good luck spell with the weather finally ran out and it was three days before I could do it ;0( In the mean time I managed to squeeze in several relaxing days here just passing time and drinking coffee from cafe's overlooking the lake. Ahh. I briefly considered the almost obligatory skydive that everyone seems to come here to do but for the nanosecond it took me to decide it was a bad idea the weather was too windy so I couldn't go up ;0) I think I'd like to do one at some point.... but maybe when I've got someone else to do it with. On my fourth day the weather was good so at 6.20am (the sunrise across ... read more

I came here to visit White Island, New Zealands only marine volcano some 50km off shore. I was booked onto a trip for the day after I arrived but wasn't tooo hopeful that it would be going out - I'd met people in Rotorua who'd had their trip cancelled again and again due to bad weather, in the end they got out on the fourth day of trying!! As it turned out I couldn't have chosen a better day! We only had 20 on our boat, compared to nearer 50 the day before and the 100 or so that they might take out in the summer and a lovely sunny day for it too. The trip was one of the best that I've been on - definately worth all the sea sickness on the way out!!! ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Rotorua April 28th 2005

I'd been warned that you smell Rotorua before you even get off the bus and its true.. the rotten egg smell of hydrogen sulphide wafts through the air con of the bus and hits you on the way into town. Strangely I quickly stopped noticing it... a sign that I should stay here or that I spent too many years in a lab working with smelly chemicals (or lab partners...) ??!!! I really liked Rotorua and could have spent longer here than I did just wondering around the different volcanic and geothermal areas in the region. Unfortunately you really need a car to get to them otherwise using the tourist buses quickly becomes quite expensive. My first stop was Wai-O-Tapu, a geothermal park about 30km from Rotorua. At the edge of the park are mud pools, ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Waitomo April 26th 2005

After a few days in Auckland I'd had enough of the city (everyone else seems to love it here but for me the best thing about it was buying my bus ticket out...) and was keen to get back to some smaller places. And you can't really get too much smaller than Waitomo... from what I saw in my two days there, Waitomo has a hotel, a couple of backpacker places, a small store, a bar, a tourist info place and that's more or less it. The main reason people come here is to see the caves and glow worms. And in true NZ style there are all sorts of ways to seem them - the action adventure route (blackwater rafting in oversized tyres, canyoning, etc) and the less adventurous tours where you gently float through ... read more

Well... I think we hit somewhere in Asia if we kept going passed Cape Reinga anyway! On the last day of our trip we were up and on the road for 7am to Cape Reinga at the tip of the North Island (or at least as far North as you can get as a tourist). It was well worth the early start as all the tourist buses were still miles away so we had the place to ourselves. This area is where the Maori believe spirits of the dead, having reached the Cape by way of 90 Mile Beach, finally depart the island. Not a bad place to depart! The rest of the day was a long drive back to Auckland via the west coast and some huge Kauri trees. Whilst not the biggest trees on ... read more
