For me Beijing was a fantastic few days of historical culture.... well, Ming and Qing dynasty which is 1368AD to 1911AD ish. I'm writing this in X'ian where everything is Shang - Qin dynasty (1700BC - 207BC) so I'm starting to re-evaluate my concept of old and historical.... but that's another blog ;0) And of course I was meeting Ann who was coming out for a wee visit from Blighty!! I was also keen to see how things had changed - I came to Beijing one New Year with Colette, a friend from work. It was freeeeezing cold then so I was looking forward to seeing how different things looked in the summer. Ann and I planned to rendezvous at a hostel I'd booked - I arrived on the night train from Suzhou and she was ... read more

This was a week of big cities.... well, in a country that has a total population of over 1.3billion ... is 5 million a city or a town? One Chinese girl I met in Suzhou couldn't believe that New Zealand has 4 million people... Suzhou itself is around the 6 mill mark, give or take a few 100,000 or so. After leaving Yangshou I travelled onto Shanghai (population @13mil) - unfortunately my flight from Guilin was delayed so I arrived just in time to miss the last Maglev - the super fast train (...30km in @ 8 mins) into town and had to make do with the slower, traditional 'bus' mode of transport :0( I had a whirlwind 2 days in Shanghai, which seemed v much like Hong Kong - young, lots of people out shopping ... read more

Well, despite all my reservations my dodgy 'just give us your money and we'll sort it' china visa turned out to be OK - I just can't believe it was so easy to get! I crossed the boarder from Hong Kong to Shenzen where alas immigration stamped my kosher visa with a nice dodgy entrance stamp, so now each time I check in to a new hostel we have to have the 'where did you enter china' conversation! Ahh well, at least it's improving my chinese vocab! I'm in a place called Suzhou at the mo.. it's cold, raining lots and has been for the last two days... in fact today was the first day my fleece moved from the bottom of my rucksack since I left NZ, a v sad day indeed :0( If it ... read more

After two fantastic days in Bario we were back at the wee airport for our journey to Miri and then Kuching, the capital city of Sarawak. There are only two planes a day here so no need for things like boarding passes or seat allocations. There is however the need to be weighed.... I guess because the planes are soo small they have to know there exact weight.. and maybe cause they they can then caculate how much freight (read bags of rice!) they can also transport... but once your bags have been weighed you too have to hop on to the scales and be weighed!! The first time it happened we wondered if we might regret those extra spring rolls we'd had back in KK......but fortunately there's no charge for you being overweight ;0) In ... read more

Headhunting was undertaken by a number of indigenous Borneo tribes, particularly those from the interior of the island..... but is thankfully now an illegal activity ;0) Why heads were taken is a point of conjecture....sometimes it was during war, sometimes as part of a ritual ceremony... the head was revered and perhaps believed to contain the soul-like matter of the deceased, maybe it was a trophy to show courage.... The Singapore Museum has an example of an engraved skull from headhunters... but no-one knows why it was engraved. Hair from the severed head was used to decorate the shield of the warrior... I guess it looked rather more intimidating in battle! Bario is a small village in the Kelabit Highlands, home of the Kelabit people - a tribe of headhunters that lived isolated in the jungle ... read more

... a land where you don't pay any taxes, where free health care, free schools etc etc is available for all... oh and retirement is around 50!! Sounds like heaven! The only tiny weeny downside for me (and not to give the impression that I'm an alcoholic!) is that as of 1991 you can't buy any alcohol here - so that's no after work drink, no glass of vino with dinner in a restaurant, nothing. We saw the impact of this as we got off the ferry from Kota Kinabalu at Labuan - still part of Sabah this island is at the mouth of Brunei Bay and is where you get the ferry to Brunei... and has the largest concentration of duty free alcohol shops I've ever seen!! So many I was surprised they could all ... read more

We're in Kota Kinabalu at the mo - KK is the capital of Sabah, Sabah being one of the two states that comprise Malaysian Borneo (the other is Sarawak which is where we're heading next). I've been in Borneo for a little over two weeks and am slowlyyyyy getting used to the heat and humidity... or maybe it just feels that way having spent a few days on a beach where the toughest decision was when to go for a swim!! Apparently it's supposed to be the end of the rainy season here at the mo.... well, I'd hate to be here when it was the middle of the rainy season! We seem to be having a downpour every afternoon at the mo but it's actually a nice relief from the humidity. Anyway here's how I ... read more

After leaving the sun and warmth of the Coramandel I arrived at Christchurch airport and immediately started pulling out the jumpers!! I met up with Helen who, having arrived on an earlier flight from Welly, was slowly loosing the will to live.... apparently 3 hours at Christchurch airport is a bit too long! We eventually got our Ezy hire car.. not so easy as the company name would have you believe... and finally hit the road down to Dunedin, which was where we planned to spend the first night. The drive down wasn't particularly interesting scenery (think flat farmland) but we had some nice stops at Timaru, Omaru and the the Moeraki Boulders where Hels and I suprised ourselves at just how many photo's you could take of rocks! To be fair they were pretty impressive ... read more

I was supposed to be going up to Auckland to see U2... who then canelled (well, hopefully postponed to November but that's another story!):0( As I had already paid for a flight from Auckland down to Christchurch to meet Helen for our weee South Island road trip (that'll be the next blog!!) and I couldn't change it, I thought I'd go up anyway and spend a few days visiting the Coromandel Penninsula... one of the places that I really wanted to see but hadn't had the chance yet. I was really glad that I did - they were having a mini heat wave so I spent 3 days sunbathing on the beach!! Much more fun that the rain and wind I'd left down in Welly! I hired a car from Auckland and drove to a place ... read more

Well I can't believe my year in NZ is almost over :0( I've still got a few weeks left to visit some of the places I've not seen..so there'll be a couple more NZ blogs to come.... but my time in Welly is over :0( Anyway before that here's what I've been up to since new year! After the adventures of Xmas and New Year I had a few great weekends relaxing back in Welly. First up there was the Beach Volleyball Pro tour that came to town.... so I can hear you saying yes yes, not a real sport, just an excuse to look at people jumping around in their bathers etc etc etc. But it was great fun to watch and looked like really hard work... at least from where I was sat in ... read more
