Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Surat Thani April 5th 2011

Having been informed that we would not be able to get a bus out of Surat Thani, due to the flooding we decided to extend our stay in the hotel for another night whilst we tried to figure out a way out of the city. Confident that the water level would not be too high, I headed over to the bus station in order to purchase a ticket for the next day. Alas, I forgot to pack my kayak and, as a result, I could no longer make it to the bus terminal in order to buy a ticket. Fortunately, help was at hand, not from any staff in the hotel, who seemed slightly inept, but from the other guests in the hotel, the majority of whom were struck in Surat Thani as well, trying to ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Phi Phi Don April 2nd 2011

Many people have been told in the past to be careful what you wish for and with the helpful assistance of Koh Phi Phi, I too now understand the benefit of this advice. After a good nights sleep in Krabi, we headed down for a hearty breakfast before being collected and taken over to the ferry terminal in Krabi to go to our next destination of Koh Phi Phi. There have been many times in my life when I have had the need to praise my digestive fortitude and no more so than on the ferry ride over to Koh Phi Phi. Out of the 50 or so passengers on the ferry ride there were only about 7 of us who weren't soon dissappearing to be sick as a result of the not so tranquil seas. ... read more

It is always a bad start to a day when you wake up in the morning and the sun is shining. Now, this might not conform to most people's ideas of a bad day, but when you purposefully change your travel plans for a day on the beach, and it rains, the sun is a bad sight on the day that you are leaving. It was in this bright sunny manner thato probably the worst day of our traveling adventure to date started. Our sole plan for the day was to make it to Ko Phi Phi, an idyllic island off the coast of Thailand so that we could do a bit of snorkeling, and more lounging on a beach, before heading in and for a bit more culture. In order to prevent any mishaps we ... read more

Leaving Kuala Lumpur our plan was to, slowly, island hop our way into Thailand thus having a great deal of fun going to various different islands, and avoid the issues of being blown up in the conflicts around the South of Thailand, Our first stop was Georgetown, on the island of Penang. Whilst there were a few ways to get there the easiest way is simply by coach from Kuala Lumpur and out across the bridge that connects the mainland to the island. The coach trip was rather comfortable, though not as nice as the trip to Melacca but the time passed quickly and we were soon on Penang. Alas, despite what we were promised we were not in Georgetown, but slightly south of the bridge. We therefore had the joyous wait for a bus to ... read more

Googlepants (adj) – a word used to describe the moment that the normally ever trusty search engine has let you down in some monumental way. For example “It said the train was meant to leave at 17:15 but it was just proper googlepants” Waking up in Kuala Lumpur we had set our first task as getting to the Chinese embassy in order to apply for our Chinese visas. Having meticulously researched the exact location of the embassy we set out confident that we would find our way. Taking the LRT we went the necessary seven stops and then took the slightly scenic route (no we did not get lost) before finally admitting defeat and asking for directions. It was at this stage that we realised we had been googlepanted. Whilst Google had the address correct it ... read more

The next morning started in a mad panic as, at 7:45, Steph realised she had not canceled her mobile phone contract. Ten minutes later and I was camped out in front of the computer completing the form whilst Steph had rolled back over and gone to sleep! Having been unable to figure out whether we should use our final day in Singapore to go to the zoo or to explore the city Steph, in a rare epiphany realised we could just stay longer and do both. We therefore headed out to explore a bit more of Singapore by merging a lot of the walking tours in the guide book into one day long tour. The longer we spent slogging it around Singapore the more I decided that it was a very odd place, inhabited by some ... read more

Asia » Singapore March 13th 2011

It is often said that Singapore is a vibrant place of good fortune, blessed by the seas. Alas, my apparent good fortune was blessed from the skies when, shortly after arriving, the indigenous airborne wildlife decided to use my head for a toilet. However, this unfortunate set back to the day came after we hand landed and left the beloved MSC Palermo behind. We were, in a way, quite fortunate with this as, after a largely uneventful 2 weeks at sea the engine malfunctioned whilst we were waiting for permission to dock in Singapore. This pushed our eventual docking back from about 7pm to about 4am the following morning. Once on land we wasted little time in getting slightly lost trying to find our way out of the port, which is no easy feat when the ... read more

Oceans and Seas March 11th 2011

The thunder rolled and the waves crashed across the bow of the intrepid MSC Palermo as it valiantly sailed across the pirate infested waters making for the safe haven of Singapore. There are a whole plethora of ways to make sea travel sound exotic and exciting filled with danger and adventure. Unfortunately if I had to choose one adjective to describe the voyage from Brisbane to Singapore it would be...meh. Were the seas rough? Not particularly. Was the food boring? Nah, it was okay really. Was the weather nice? Mixed, rainy some days, sunny the next. However, a lot of this was to be expected. We boarded the ship in Brisbane expecting it to be a dull and monotonous trudge across to Singapore in which the only war waged would be against boredom. We therefore came ... read more

Our penultimate day with the campervan started on a rather dismal note when we woke up and realised that someone had gotten into the campervan during the night and taken about $20 from our wallet. Luckily, I suppose, the cards were all left as was the camera, satnav and Ipod all sitting in the glove compartment. Having checked almost daily since then it appears that none of the cards have been used so it could have been a lot worse. In an attempt to improve our day somewhat we set out to have a good explore around Alice Springs. This had a lot to do with our desire to take a positive out of the day and nothing to do with burning off some of the large fried breakfast we had just made in the campervan, ... read more

Yulara, the service town for Uluru, was not at all like we had imagined. We thought that it would be a small town however it was more a collection of different standards of accommodation from camping up to 5 star and a small supermarket for them all. Thankfully there was a petrol station there which was a bit cheaper. We got up early the next morning and managed to pack everything away in time to make to it to Uluru by 8am, just in time for the guided ranger walk. he told us a bit about the culture of the local people, the Anangu, and how they managed to survive off the land. He also explained why Uluru was so important to them. In the Anangy culture every creature has a story about their creation. These ... read more
