I don't know how it happened – well, not strictly true as I was there I just don't want to recollect it – but somehow we ended up back in pointless boring nothing to do Kunming. Still, before we got there we did have a few great days in Lijiang. We woke up slightly sore from our amazing trek in Tiger Leaping Gorge and headed out to have a good explore of Ljiang Old town. First up was a trip up the Lion Hill. So named as it apparently resembles a sleeping lion – personally I think it was at best a running warthog and more likely a triangle that someone sat on but anyhow – this hill has amazing views over the old town and a pagoda to climb up. We had a few problems ... read more

This is the story of the man who went up a gorge...and came back a tomato face. It was with a little trepidation that we got up early, finished packing our bags and headed out to the bus stop to get us to the gorge. We managed to arrive early, quiet a feat as we weren't sure where we were going and found out that we had time for some breakfast. Grabbing some local street food, some sort of breadesque base with a fried egg and spices, (which was great) we boarded the bus and headed off to Tiger Leaping Gorge. The views along the way to the start of the trek were amazing and we were happy when we stopped off at a photo spot to grab some early morning piccies of the snow capped ... read more

After leaving Kunming we headed for the relaxing old town of Dali. Billed as a look into an old Chinese village it sounded a great change from Kunming, where there was nothing to see, to a town where there was everything to see. The trip to Dali actually went remarkably easily. Arriving at the bus station we were able to buy tickets for the very next bus to Dali and, 15 minutes after arriving at the bus station we were on our way. A short 4 hour bus trip later, and remarkably bereft of any crazy driving, we arrived in Dali. Only we didn't arrive in Old Dali we arrived in Xiaguan (New Dali). However, thanks to the Rough Guide and after conquering the language barrier with the use of some inventive hand signals we were ... read more

Many strange and wonderful things can occur when you send your wife in search of hot water on a sleeper train. In this instance Steph ended up talking to a member of the Samaritans Purse, whilst in the hunt for boiling water. It was as a result of this chance encounter that she bounded back into our sleeper carriage and announced that she had secured a free lift from Lao Cai to Sapa with the Samaritans Purse in the morning. It was because of this that, at 6:00am the next morning we were able to walk straight past all of the waiting taxi and minibus drivers and pile straight into the Samaritans Purse jeep along with the American family that were working for the Samaritans Purse and hence had arranged the vehicle. We then proceeded straight ... read more

The sleeper train to Hanoi was, by all relevant standards, a remarkably comfortable affair with the train not stopping too many times during the night. Even better, for the first time, everyone was in our carriage by the time we set off so they didn't wake us up in the night, until 4:00 am when we had to get off the train. A short, if slightly dubious taxi ride later (dodgy meter), and we were outside our hotel with 24 hour check-in facing a metal shutter and no doorway. At the insistence of the people sitting on the street we banged on the gate and, a few minutes later we were greeted, somewhat bleary eyed, by Miss Moon, the hotel owner. Miraculously our room was the only free one so we could check in and actually ... read more

Our final morning in Saigon was a rather slow affair as we had already done many of the sights close to the hotel, meaning that all we had to do was pack up our stuff and look forward to the bus ride to Dalat, a city up in the hills of Centrel Vietnam, with a colonial feel to it. Compared to many of the bus journeys we had taken so far in Vietnam the ride to Dalat was a slow, if rather enjoyable ride, certainly when you got up in the hills and had a look at some of the stunning views. It was however, a rather slow bus ride, though this never seemed to stop the bus driver from using his horn every few seconds It was evening when we eventually arrived in Dalat and, ... read more

Having booked our stress free trip we got up early and headed down to wait for our pick up to get to the docks. The driver arrived on time and a few minutes later we were sat on the boat that would take us to the Cambodian border and into Vietnam. It was a slow boat ride down the Mekong river, which was ultimately a little disappointing as there was very little to look at bar the banks of the river. We slowly began to realise along the way that our guide wasn't the best at explaining exactly what was going on. This was ultimately confirmed when we were unable to establish when our light lunch would be served. We stopped off on the way to look at a rice noodle factory. However, after scrambling ... read more

Our fourth and final day in Siam Reap was spent on the Tonle Sap lake visiting a floating village. Unlike the floating village that we had seen sometime ago in Thailand the difference with this village was that, due to the large difference in water levels during the year, this village actually floated and was not on stilts. We had a look around the village and also learned a little bit about the trades of the villagers, who were largely fishermen during the dry season but stopped in the wet season when the fish were pregnant. We also saw the crocodile farm, which we weren't too impressed with as it was very cramped and they did not have that much space. After we returned from the trip we lounged by the pool a bit before taking the ... read more

Getting up at 3am is never a nice experience. Getting up at 3 am in order to face one of the days you have been least looking forward to already just makes it even worse. It was therefore with much reluctance that we got up and headed down to the Tuk Tuk waiting to take us to the train station. Now, we had seen many things in the guidebook explaining that the best way to make it to the border without much hassle (until you get there) is to do it by yourself. This way you can avoid the hassle of getting stuck on iffy transport and being overcharged. Whilst we knew there would be some amount of overcharging paying 200 Baht for two 20 Baht train tickets and a Tuk Tuk drive really was a ... read more

Arriving in Chang Mai, at the unsightly time of 6:30 am we got to experience our first ever Tuk Tuk ride. Having heard much of the ways in which a Tuk Tuk driver will try to scam you it was a bit of a relief to eventually arrive at our hostel scam free. It was also a relief to be out of the Tuk Tuk as being carried around in what is essentially a demented version of a Robin reliant (with worse build quality), with a driver who believes road markings are merely optional was not a nice way to start the day. We stayed in the MD guest house and had a nice quiet room with a small patio ideal for drying clothes outside. Even better was that the breakfast, which was included, did not ... read more
