Do you think it is you Grahame and not the LIFTS at all - maybe you need to find a cheap Fireman's outfit in one of the many special shops you seem to find! hahahahaha.

Mum
Yay, finally a photo of the birthday hat. Love it!! Love the leopard-print band..very cool.

Love the photo title - there IS always a cat
What is it about Benvie's on holiday and cats? Pula looks like a cute place! What is the Croatian equivalent of the daily gelato and margherita pizza gonna be? For me, it was the Croatian calamari...scrummy!
8th May 2013

Nope, pizza is now a goneburger. It was 3 small fish and half a dozen sprats.Brent would have been horrified to see us eating such small fish but they were yummy. The Benvies ARE cat people

Flying the flag!
So now the Croatian flag will be hoisted at Sharon Place in honour of your visit there. We did have the Italian one up for a few days but 5-6 weeks did seem a bit long for one flag! Must given our new Vatican flag a dust off too!
8th May 2013

And a colourful one it is too! That will have your neighbours guessing unless of course it has been up recently.Gretchen was thinking of buying a cap in the flag colours but thought twice. Forgot to mention ages ago did check out a number of souviner shops on the day of the Vatican but didn't have any luck.Everything else but a flag on sale.

The alpine church built in 1490

Thank you Dave and Merry Jo,it was a lovely little church that must have seen a lot of history including battles in the 1st World War when the Italians and Austrians fought over the Dolomites. The whole area is fantastic and a photographers dream.More coming as we took another walk the next day and then a drive through more of the Dolomites as we headed back towards Venice. It reminds us very much of the Rockies in the USA and Canada although here you seem to be so close to them here.

Dream retirement
At last my sister is on the same wavelength. How about we sell up our million dollar mansions and move to a four-apartment villa in either Tuscany or Umbria? That way we can enjoy the good life and have an income from the apartments. I'll do the garden, you do the accommodation and the artist-in-residence can take the art classes for wealthy tourists. How about it? The only problem will be how to use Winston's card. I'm off to see the real estate agent.

Batteries!
We found a use for that card of batteries that you so kindly put in Cormac's Christmas stocking last week....the battery back up for our alarm clock had run out and it required one of those little disc batteries. So we got out that huge supply that we were sure would also last us for the rest of our lives and shock horror....the size we needed wasnt there on the card. It had every size possible except the one we needed! I had to go up to the supermarket to buy one for $7 each!

lodging in venice & agrigento
G&G Given your suggestion about spending time in Agrigento I went back and re-read your post, as well as the prior days post. Despite the trials with the lift & car park, I will look for the Costazzurro. We need an inexpensive place to stay. It finally dawned on me that you are booking your stays as you proceed through the trip. I should have passed on our finds up the Adriatic (although it sounds like you booked them already). We aren't going along the instep, but cutting across the ankle via Potenza. We found a little place north of the Gargano in Termoli. We still looking for a place near San Ramino/Rimini, but have a good place scoped out for Venice off AirBnB with Goretta (AirBnB #390282 ). Although outside of Venice, its less urban and not too far from the train (10k) to Venice (€2.20 pp one way). Afraid that's our last stop before heading back to Munich. Sorry, I should have connected the dots sooner and gotten the Termoli/Venice suggestions to you sooner. Enjoy the day. Grazie mille, Michael

Thanks!
Grahame & Gretchen, appreciate your postings, especially about lodgings & sites. We planning a much less ambitious (three week) trek from Munich to Sicily and back for September. Don't know what protocols are for mentioning names of lodging establishments, but would be helpful. I had already discovered Fausto's place in Monreale - which looks delightful. Your tip on the Best Western in Siracusa was quite helpful. (We've been using a web site called "AirBnB". It looks like you used mostly "Bookings".) Looking forward to what you discover heading up the Adriatic coast, as that will be the last leg of our adventure. Respect your ambition. We've done 3 months before - in a Rialta caravan across the States, but 7 months of new beds every few nights is daunting. Wow! Regards ~ Michael (in the Finger Lakes - upper NY State, US)

Faustos place from Air BnB was very good and well priced. It was good to be out of Palermo rather than in the city.Best Western was certainly a step up from some of the Italian hotels, almost American like.It is about 6km from the city but has a large shopping mall nearby. The B&B Nacore in Massafra was a great place and would thoroughly recommend.Booking.com had a great deal.Sign up for their secret deals and you will get specials below their listed price on the website.Would recommend Agrigento over Siracuse if you are looking for history and have limited time.Keep flowing us and we will answer any questions you might have. Cheers
