North America » United States » Washington » Mt Rainier August 2nd 2008

Over the last few years, I have become increasingly more interested in traveling to places of natural beauty. As much as I love visiting cities and seeing incredible architecture, experiencing new cultures, and enjoying the wide range of eating options, there is something about the beauty of nature that pulls at my heartstrings in ways I cannot describe. Maybe it's the fresh mountain air, the vivid colors found only in the great outdoors, or the awe-inspiring views that force me to ponder the meaning of life. All I know is that some of my most enjoyable and memorable experiences have occurred while in the presence of an incredible landscape, a panoramic vista, or a lush countryside. As I slowly integrate into the world of outdoor experiences, I have begun to realize that here in Washington State, ... read more

As we began to travel more regularly during the summer of 2007, I decided that along with traveling internationally, we needed to make it a point and priority to visit some of the beautiful and interesting places in our own backyard. As Washingtonians, we are so lucky and fortunate to have such a plethora of different and amazing places to visit in our state within only a few hours of our home. It seems so many of us (including ourselves) take our diverse state for granted, not realizing the incredible opportunities that await our arrival. One of the first places I wanted to take some time to visit was the San Juan Islands, as neither of us had ever been. I had heard numerous wonderful things about these local islands and so in August of 2007, ... read more

North America » United States » New Mexico » Santa Fe April 24th 2008

Ever since we returned from visiting Mike's Grandparents (Ron and Dolores) in Arizona during February of 2005, we had casually discussed meeting them in New Mexico and staying in the Santa Fe area. I was extremely interested in visiting Santa Fe due to it's fascinating historical background and also because it's one of the oldest cities in the United States. Those closest to me know the huge history buff I am; it always intrigues me and I thoroughly enjoy learning as much as I possibly can about the world that occurred before my time! So, during January of 2008, we finally decided to go. We bought our plane tickets, reserved the condo in Santa Fe, and the planning began for a trip that would occur from Thursday, April 24th to Tuesday, April 29th. Day 1 (Thursday, ... read more

North America » Mexico » Jalisco » Puerto Vallarta January 17th 2008

We traveled to Puerto Vallarta from January 17th to January 22nd, 2008. This was our second vacation together to a "tropical" destination (our first was to the island of Oahu back in September 2005 for a week). Truth be told, I was not as excited for this trip as I have been in the past for other places we have traveled to. However, in the end we both decided Puerto Vallarta was a great place to visit and we definitely want to go back again in the future! We began missing the incredible food as soon as we left! Just so you know, I refer to Puerto Vallarta as “PV” throughout this entry. Day 1 (Thursday, January 17th) Our direct flight to PV left Seattle around 09:00. Since PV isn't necessarily the first thing that comes ... read more

North America » United States » Oregon » Cannon Beach August 31st 2007

We spent the four days over Labor Day weekend (Friday August 31st to Monday September 3rd) on the Northern part of the Oregon Coast. Neither of us had ever visited that area, but I had heard numerous wonderful things and we wanted to check it out for ourselves. Since it was only about a four-hour drive away, we thought it would be the perfect getaway to take advantage of Labor Day weekend. Day 1 (Friday, August 31st) We left early on Friday morning around 9:00. It was sunny and warm out, which always puts a smile on my face, but especially so on vacation days. Our first stop along the way was at a restaurant called Country Cousins in the city of Centralia, Washington. I had eaten here previously when I was 15 with my Grandpa ... read more

For my birthday weekend, we planned a three day trip to San Francisco, California. We had visited the city previously five years before on our road trip down to Southern California; however, we were only in the city for a few hours and didn't venture much past Fisherman's Wharf. On this trip, I wanted to make sure to do the city justice by seeing all of the important sites and eating at many wonderful restaurants. Our trip occurred from Friday, August 3rd to Monday, August 6th, 2007. Day 1 (Friday, August 3rd, 2007) Our Alaska Airlines flight out of Seatac was scheduled to leave at 7:30 PM, but was delayed about an hour, which was irritating. The flight itself was quick, although I was agitated for a good portion of the ride. The young boy who ... read more

North America » United States » Washington » Sequim July 20th 2007

We visited Sequim, Washington and the surrounding area on an extended weekend trip during July of 2007. I did not write a day by day account of this trip, so below I will provide a brief summary of the places we saw and things we did. Sequim is located on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State along the Dungeness River near the base of the Olympic Mountains. It is most famously known as one of the driest spots in Washington, only receiving an average of 15 inches of rain each year. Because of the lack of rain, the city has attracted many retirees, including Mike’s grandparents, who call Sequim home for six to seven months each year. Our reason for visiting the area was of course to visit his grandparents, but I also wanted to see ... read more

Europe » Norway May 17th 2007

We visited the beautiful country of Norway over a period of 12 days during May of 2007. We started the trip in Oslo, staying two full days. Next, we took a flight from Oslo to Haugesund, where we visited my Uncle Knut's family on the island of Karmøy for five days. Then, we drove down to Stavanger, first stopping at Preikelstolen for the most amazing hike ever. We then spent 1.5 days in Stavanger, before ending our trip in Bergen. We spent two days touring the city, and another day completing the Norway in a Nutshell Tour of the Sognefjord. I did not write a day by day account of this trip, so instead, I will provide a brief summary of the places we saw and things we did. Oslo: (Friday, May 18th to Saturday, May ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris September 27th 2006

After spending two weeks in England and Wales, we left Bath early in the morning on the 27th of September, taking the train into central London. From there, we took the Eurostar high-speed train directly to Paris. We spent a full week in Paris, visiting many of the well-known sights, and took several day-trips outside of the city to places such as Château de Versailles, Château de Fontainebleau, the town of Chartres and it's famous Cathedral, and the Paris Disneyland Resort. This blog entry covers the week we spent in Paris. Lodging: We chose to stay at Hotel Muguet, based on a combination of Rick Steves' recommendation and the great reviews it received on Tripadvisor.com. The hotel was located in the charming Rue Cler neighborhood, a traditional Parisian neighborhood near the Eiffel Tower. We paid 125 ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Somerset » Bath September 19th 2006

After spending a full week in London, Mike and I headed out of the city and spent six days in the English and Welsh countryside visiting Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwick, Bath, Stonehenge, Avebury, and the Cotswolds. During our one day in Wales, we managed to see the Wye River Valley (Tintern Abbey and Chepstow Castle) and Cardiff. Lodging: We stayed at three different bed and breakfasts during this part of the trip. Each of these bed and breakfasts are described throughout the entry. Blenheim Palace: A massive country house located in Woodstock, this building is the only non-episcopal country house in England to hold the title "palace". The house was built as a gift for John Churchill, the 1st Duke of Marlborough as thanks for his role in beating the French at the Battle of Blenheim in 1704. ... read more
