Maasai Mara What more can you ask for? A balloon ride over the Maasai Mara watching the sunrise and the wildebeest migration, a leopard with a fresh kill up a tree, lion prides sitting by the roadside, cheetahs playfully attempting to mate ( one more willing than the other), vultures feeding off a zebra carcass left by lions from the day before, giraffes sitting under a tree, elephants wandering past while you have a picnic lunch and a lion so thirsty she has dropped to the side of the road to drink from a puddle left by last night's rain. We asked for and got the crossing of the wilderbeest over the Mara river but with only a minute to spare. Two days of Kenya that could not be topped. Our balloon ride started with a ... read more

We set off from Nairobi in our 4 wheel drive vehicles. Drove out through the busy Nairobi traffic and were grateful that we don't have to drive ourselves as there do not appear to be any rules particularly on roundabouts. Kevin decided that the rule is " who dares wins". We headed towards the area where the Masai live and with about 80 ks to go, we hit the corrugated road which we followed to the park. We started seeing the Masai tending their cattle on the side of the roads. They dress in the colour red supposedly so that the lions can recognise them. They each leave each other alone. We started seeing wildlife as the landscape changed to the plains. Zebras, giraffes, elephants and wildebeest. Arrived at Ol Tukai (Swahili for palm) lodge , ... read more

A two camera battery day. Highlight after highlight. Border crossing from Zambia to Botswanas. Amazing to see thee trucks lined up on both sides of the river waiting for the ferry to take them across One of the ferries is currently out of orderit can take 3 days or more to cross. We went across by skiff, had our passport stamped, disinfected our shoes in the foot and loth bath and drove to where we joined the cruise of the Chobe river. Saw lots of bird life , elephants, crocodiles, and hippos. They were everywhere. It was fantastic. Back to Chobe lodge for a buffet lunch. After lunch we went on a game drive - very bumpy and dusty . We saw giraffes drinking from the river. Fantastic to see the way they bend over then ... read more

We have now seen the big three - waterfalls that is. Iguazzu, Victoria and Niagara. Victoria seems to create its own climate. From the hotel we could see the mist rising in the air. We walked down to the falls in brilliant warm sunshine, taking photos as we went particularly of th,many rainbows that seemed to appear and disappear frequently. Suddenly we had to don our ponchos as the water felt like rain falling. It was hard to keep the cameras dry but somehow we managed to take some very unattractive photos of several of us disguised as "drowned rats". Two days later we got some different views of the falls from a helicopter. What an experience. It was a 12 seater. I was strapped in a,,t the side with fellow traveller, Julie and we thought ... read more

Two fantastic days in Kruger National Park staying at Tinga and Narina Lodge. Our group was split between the two lodges and we stayed at Narina. From the time we arrived it was fantastic. We were greeted with a refreshing towel and iced tea and shown our room. Each room is separated by a boardwalk and it is easy to feel that you are the only ones there. Each room has a balcony , splash pool and outdoor shower as well as an indoor bathroom, bed, lounge and all the usual facilities. No matter where you are, you can see the scenery outside. We were collected for the first game drive, six to a vehicle and introduced to our driver Alfred and spotter Lucas. Took a while to see our first animals, but as the drive ... read more

Our African adventure began with a 5 day stay in Cape Town at the Mt Nelson Hotel. Jet lag aside we had a wonderful stay. We began by spending a day at the V and A Waterfront - a type of Darling Harbour development at the old port. It gave us a chance to get out in the sun and stretch our legs after the long flights having arrived at midnight the night before. We met another couple from our South American trip and off the eight of us went. Looked at a great craft market that sold goods made by women which helps provide an income for them. This will become a recurring theme in Africa as women try to create a livelihood. We came back to the hotel and had High Tea that afternoon ... read more

MONKEYLAND Monkeyland is a free-roaming primate sanctuary and is home to over 500 previously captive primates. The monkeys previously lived as pets, from petting zoos, private zoos or sometimes ordinary zoos. You are not allowed to touch the monkeys as the purpose of the sanctuary is to try to teach the monkeys to be monkeys again. They live together in reasonable harmony with lots of playful sparring. We saw many different types including the local monkey the Vervet who has bright blue testicles to attract females, a white gibbon, spider monkeys, capuchin and yellow squirrel monkeys ( amongst others). OSTRICH FARM There are a number of ostrich farms in South Africa. In the 19th and early 20th century there were many more. The houses that were built by the wealthy owners became known as Feather palaces ... read more

What a great time we had in New York. Everything we were expecting. We arrived on a very rainy day but the lights of Times Square lifted our spirits. We had driven from Washington DC and stopped at Philadelphia. The day gave us nothing but pouring rain which is not the best way to see a city. The number of Rocky impersonators was cut to 2 at the Museum of Modern Art but they did a great job with a fellow traveller going up behind them to record the moment on video. We did stop and see the Liberty Bell after we had sampled a Philly cheese steak roll (as you do). and then rolled on to New York. The brightness of the lights of Times Square on a dull wet day make you feel as ... read more

How do we describe Niagara Falls? Like Las Vegas with giant waterfalls. Once you get past the tacky, glitzy town and casinos you get to the falls. Firstly we had a ride on the Skywheel , a ferris wheel structure which gave us a great view of the falls. We then went down to get on the boat for the Maid of the Mist tour. There are lines of people for the boat ride but it moves quickly. You are given a blue poncho in anticipation of the drenching you are going to get and loaded onto the Maid of the Mist boats. After stopping for the obligatory souvenir photograph we were loaded onto the boats with about 600 other participants and taken out to the falls. We were lucky to have a very still morning for ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Inside Passage July 21st 2013

A beautiful sunny day as we sail out of Vancouver for our seven day cruise of the Inside Passage to Alaska - stopping at Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan. After the chaotic checkin including keys to our room that would not work and a safety briefing where you could not see the demonstration because of the number of people on deck, we settled in. The day got better as we found our way to the pool deck, where a BBQ and the cocktail of the day - Margaritas - were calling us. Sitting in the warm sun as we sailed away was a great end to the day. A sailing day the next day looking at the magnificent scenery and bits of ice floating in the water. Day 3 a stop in Juneau. The bus took us ... read more
