Today it's snowing in Istanbul. The cars are driving the slowest I've ever seen them move and everyone everywhere has a knit hat. It's also my last day. I'm not too sure what to say about my last day. I'm disappointed that studying abroad didn't work out for next semester, and my plan to travel around Europe also didn't pan out. Basically, my plans for this year have hardly been met. But I suppose that when making plans a year in advance these things happen... I guess I'll just talk about what I'll be missing about Istanbul and what I'm excited to see at home (People aside for both parts) I want to come home to see.... -A real park! Istanbul is a city of sprawl. As time moves on people moving into Istanbul just tack ... read more

School has begun! The streets near my apartment are bustling with young adults and the obscene amount of photocopying stores lining the block now make complete sense. I'll begin with where I last left off. Registration was the headache that many warned us about for everyone except me. Mine was exceptionally easy. Honestly, the Gods are smiling upon me. So the way it works is the 20,000 students attending Bogazici are all given IDs and passwords. For us exchange students these won't even work until registration opens, so all we know of what the website looks like is the screen shots that the school, aware that this is a really stupid idea, provides. At 10:00, ready or not, the system opens. The 20,000 students attending do a virtual scramble for classes. At Purchase, my home university, ... read more

Ok, so school is about to start and I figure I should write out a recap of my ridiculously long summer break here in Istanbul (about things other then the city and the creepy men.) Now writing this has become a bit more complicated, because much of my stay has to do with who I've met, acquaintances and annoyances. What if I write something a bit rude and the person I write about sees it? Well, I guess I didn't like them anyways, but still. I'd feel like a jerk. Hopefully I just won't dislike anyone and that won't be a problem. ;) A majority of the time I've spent here I've been hanging out on my balcony with my room mates. Like I said, doing all the touristy things will be much cheaper once I ... read more

I guess I'll start with a good ol' disclaimer. I am incredibly grateful to be studying abroad. I know that many are not blessed with the means or opportunity to do the amazing things that I am and for that I have to marvel at my incredibly good fortune. I know that I am living, according to some people, the life, and I could never look at all that is given to me and take it lightly. Yes, I do feel that I've worked hard to get the grades and all that to study abroad, but regardless of how much I have personally done much of how I got here is luck. Luck that I was born into my understanding family with just enough money to spare to help me fund my trips. Luck that I'm ... read more

SEPT 1 2011 I woke up with a jolt today, jello in my veins. My uncle's alarm clock was ringing, as expected. Had I really slept or just been thinking? I looked bleary-eyed at the time. 2AM. I've seen this time before on many occasions. Sometimes because sleep simply won't bless me with respite, others because I'm, as my Grandma would say, out on the town. But waking up at 2AM... waking up at 2AM is not something I've done before. Not something I was ever keen to do. Looking out at the dark cold air, the day hasn't even started to consider unfolding. It isn't overly depressing or foreboding, it's just so early that nothing can be made of today. Or tomorrow? I can't tell. I'm at the airport now. It's 5AM, 1.5 hours until ... read more

Here I was, with 2000 raving Tottenham fans, surrounded by 72000 jeering Manchester United followers. All adorned in their proper colors. I'm not in America anymore. But I'll back up. I left America, which was very tearful and depressing. It's hard to imagine how long this year will be, how much will change in this year. How much will stay the same at this time of “transition” for all of us? All my friends will live yet another year without me. I'll come back home and need to be prompted of a whole years happenings in a few meager hang outs and then go back to Purchase, where I'm sure even more of my friends will have dropped out or left. But I have to stop thinking about that. I'm doing awesome things. I'll be ... read more

So, it's a little more then a month till I leave. I'm starting to take stock of what I have to do to prepare... Visa? It's on it's way. The Turkish Embassy has my passport as I type, I'm sure diligently looking over my records and (hopefully) seeing that I'm not a threat to their country. Packed yet? Absolutely not. I have no idea where to begin with packing. I'm still not sure if I'm studying in Prague for the Spring semester. I assume I'll figure it out when I get there.... one of the problems with this plan though is that I have no idea what type of stuff to pack. Istanbul is hot. Prague is cold. If I wind up staying in Istanbul then I'll just have lugged a bunch of heavy winter clothes ... read more

So, I guess this is my first official blog post. It's now 60 days before I leave for England. Right now I'm not thinking much about it, I only really think about when people talk about going back to school and I think oh right, I'm not going back this year... This will be the longest time I've been home in two years, which is... alright? Kingston is ok so long as you have friends, are easily amused, have a car, and a job (or serious hobby if you're into that.) I have 3/4 of them. Well I have friends, but considering I haven't really been around in 2 years I'm not too sure who to call, or if they would even have the same numbers. So right now I'm crocheting a blanket... which might actually ... read more
