Today is our last full day in Mexico. Ian’s ankle is still sore but better than yesterday. Thank goodness we had anti-inflammatory tablets with us and we wrapped the foot up in the cold towels yesterday. It’s clearly swollen but Ian says not nearly as painful as it was before. We have a slow start to the day as we want to see whether Ian should be resting up or not. Ian decides we will go out. I go to the supermarket for our breakfast croissants and some bits for a packed lunch and we will go to the ferry for the Isla de Mujeres. One last chance to see the MUSA. Today we take the public bus to the hotel area of Cancun. This is where all the beaches are and also where we can book up some scuba diving. It turns out to be very easy as the bus leaves from the main street just by our hotel. We manage to get the last two seats and settle in for a drive through rush hour traffic. We wanted to be at the scuba centre early before they go out diving for the day! Though there is quite a breeze and out to sea, some impressive white horses, so it’s not certain that diving won’t have been cancelled anyway! This morning we have planned to return to Puente Esmerelda, the little cenote/lagoon along the beach from our accommodation. It is Sunday, so bound to be busy hence we have skipped breakfast and are ready to set off at 8.30am. The sky is overcast and it has been raining so it’s a pleasant temperature for walking. The beach near our accommodation is fairly deserted. There’s a group of youngsters who have obviously had a night of it. They sway past us exchanging a slurred ‘good morning’! There are also a few people casting fishing nets, though we don’t see much sign of a catch. Finally, we have the ‘beach rakers’. It’s a great shame that neither of us is fit to dive...as there’s really not much else to do here unless you are a sunbathing lover. So, it’s another late breakfast for us followed by a trip to the beach. It’s much hotter today. There was no rain last night. The forecast says we might have rain later but there’s not much sign of it right now. We have decided to prove the accommodation owner wrong by walking to the cenote. We are so near to the beach that we decide just to put our swim things on and take towels, snorkelling gear and water. We splash our way along the beach. We pack our bags ready for our 1pm bus journey to Playa del Carmen. We really have not seen much of Tulum as we haven’t felt well. But to be honest from what we did see, we didn’t like it much. Still, our accommodation has been a little haven. We have enjoyed the peaceful garden and it’s been nice to have had access to the kitchen area to enjoy some simple home cooking. Our host hails a taxi and we are at the bus station within minutes. It’s not that far but it’s really hot now. The bus station is small and heaving.
