It’s 7am and just getting light. Our bus is labouring it’s way up the mountains into the cloud and the thin mizzle. It’s pretty cold. We arrive at the bus station half an hour later and don our fleeces. A taxi takes us to our hotel but the doors are all firmly locked. The driver is concerned about leaving us standing on the pavement in the rain, but I knock on the wooden door and someone kindly let’s us in. We store our luggage and go off in search of some breakfast. There isn’t much open at this time but we find a small cafe. The only thing we recognise from the menu is tamale (steamed fruit pudding), we order strawberry and pineapple flavours. The ladies in the shop are making the tamale in the traditional ... read more

Today we have nothing specific planned. We have to be out of our room by midday so we spend the morning lounging around and then decamp to the very comfortable lounge area of the hotel to write up yesterday’s blog - I was much too tired that do it last night! It’s not so hot today...overcast and actually threatening rain! We are wondering whether to take a trip out to a couple of artisan towns. Our German companions from yesterday have told us they are OK but nothing particularly spectacular - they were thrown in as additional stops on a Monte Alban minibus tour that they did the day before. Still, we have nothing better to do! The town of Arrazola produces colourful wood carvings - all made from the coral tree. San Bartolo Coyotepec produces ... read more

A leisurely start today as we are going on an organised tour and they always wait till it’s baking hot to take tourists out. We have breakfast and are waiting in reception at 10am as instructed. The minivan has arrived. We are last pick up...just our luck, the van is full and we are on the back seat. We prepare ourselves for a bumpy ride. We are sharing the seat with a German couple, Marcus and Sebastian, so we enjoy some interesting conversation and have joint groans at every speed bump as we are rocketed to the ceiling each time. Our tour is taking us to the Tlacoluoa Valley and, whilst we could have attempted it independently, the distance covered might have been a bit of an ask in just one day. Our first stop is ... read more

I didn’t get much rest last night - I think this must be the city that never sleeps! We are opposite the town indoor market and the shouting went on till at least 2am...by which time I was wide awake too! We have planned an early start today so I sleep walk into breakfast. Oaxaca is definitely well marked on the tourist trail. The good news is that this means a great European breakfast as there are lots of tour groups here! I enjoy fresh fruit and yoghurt as well as scrambled eggs with ham. Ian is tucking into toast and Nutella. You can have too much of an authentic experience at times so we are glad to deviate. It also means we won’t be snacking! Breakfast was a slight rush as we want to be ... read more

It’s another early start. Our bus leaves the central station at 8.25am and that’s right on the other side of the city. We have packed our bags and are just deciding whether to return the fan to the room we purloined it from...after the hassle involved in changing rooms we decided just to help ourselves to the missing items in the new room rather than to ask! We check out. It’s the sour faced woman that wanted to house us in the hell hole. She takes our key unsmilingly and not so much as an adieu...clearly she has not forgiven us for standing our ground! Our Uber arrives promptly and we are at the bus station within half an hour giving us plenty of time to purchase goodies for brunch. Security is cleared and our bus ... read more

This morning we are taking a bus to Cholula which is on the outskirts of Puebla to see a unique pyramid as it has underground tunnels which we can walk through. It’s about a 15 minute walk to the place where we believe the buses leave. It’s still reasonably cool and, as luck would have it, we spot a minibus marked Cholula before we reach the location. It stops to let us on. It is 7 pesos each and the journey should take under an hour (30 minutes by car, but the bus is bound to take all the back routes). We hop inside and find that there are bench seats all around the edges with a little standing room in the middle, a bit like a dive boat. There is no sign of any chickens, ... read more

Today is earmarked for Ian’s tour of the historic centre. We start early to avoid the heat...and actually it’s a tad chilly! We begin with breakfast at a pavement cafe in the zocalo. Eggs and beans for me, omelette in a tangy sauce for Ian. We begin at the cathedral on the zocalo. The tower is supposed to be open so that we can frighten ourselves to death climbing it for superb views of the city. Anyway, it’s no longer open to the public so we are spared the suspense. We enter the Biblioteca Palafoxiana opposite, the former bishop’s palace, which is said to house 50,000+ books. It’s not open yet but we are able to access the courtyard. We then head down various streets, faced with traditional fronted buildings. Many of the buildings are covered ... read more

Our bus is at 9.30am and we are all packed. We have no WiFi again but at least we get a hot shower. Did I mention the shampoo/shower gel in the hotel smells like the stuff they clean the floor with? Think pine toilet duck! It’s a shame as this is a nice modern hotel but there is no attention to detail! We go for breakfast. There is no fruit and no pastries but a Mexican tour guide who is also slumming it here demands they supply it. He also says that this is a major fruit growing area of Mexico, therefore the orange juice should be freshly squeezed and not from a packet! His clients are at a posh 5 star up somewhere else in town. Fresh pastries and fruit arrive within minutes. The milk ... read more

We have one more day in Poza Rica. Unfortunately, the town has nothing to recommend it, other than being a handy jump off point for a visit to El Tajín and also our onward journey. It’s not even mentioned in our guide book - which is a sure sign of zero interest. Lonely Planet usually come up with something...even if it is something totally terrible? They have led us on many wild goose chases over the years. Trip Advisor has five places on it’s list. The first three are shopping arcades. Then there is the new square which is described as a dangerous place, full of drug addicts and pick pockets...it’s the square opposite our hotel! Can’t say it looked too dangerous to us, even at night when we have been eating at the street stalls. ... read more

We have two days in Poza Rica but only one main point of interest it would seem. Shall we go there today or tomorrow? Today we think! With all this time on our hands you would think we would have a lie in, but the weather is hot and sticky here...it really does not pay to go out late. We are down at breakfast when they open at 7am! Breakfast looks great...a continental buffet: cereal, fruit, yoghurt, toast...but looks can be deceiving. They obviously don’t have too many guests here as the food has clearly been hanging around some time! First the cereal...it is soggy and the milk has turned. The fruit is OK and the yoghurt is in packs...I don’t dare look at the ‘sell by’ date. The bread for toasting has mould on it ... read more
