After our dramatic time up in the north part of the north island we continued in our pursuit for some peace and quiet, this time it was in relation to New Years. Never have gotten the whole New Years vibe to be honest, it always seems so forced and over-priced, so we planned to have some beers with a nice view and a good laugh on our own. We drove along some beautiful roads all lined with flowering christmas trees. Not the classic tinsel decorated chirstmas trees, but red flowered wide branching trees that are spectacular on their own, and even more dramatic en masse in avenue form. You see, only 2 entries into our New Zealand advenuture and we've decided to populate our news with passionate talk of trees, this might seem a bit too ... read more

Before we begin to tell you about our first impressions of New Zealand, let me tell you a few funny anicdotes about our flight from Cairns to New Zealand. As it was a near to "chrissie" flight, we were accompanied by many Kiwi's returning home to spend their time with nearest and dearest, as well as a few more people heading off on their holidays to get away from their nearest and clearly not so dearest. One family clearly took the biscuit in my estimations for the "writing home about award" and that was a large kiwi family with about 4 young children, the youngest of which was either holding up the queue to the toilet by climbing and getting stuck in the sink or being hoyed (and I mean literally hoyed) up and down the ... read more

We hit the outskirts of the Outback with a very rainy bump. As you can see from our first pictures we were hit with a heavy rain storm as we crossed back over into more populated lands. Unfortunatley this coincided with our running on petrol fumes so we had to stop at our last yocal petrol station to fill er up. Thom was the perfect gentleman of course and got out to actually do the filling up and he was soaked after being out there for about all of 3 seconds. I'd previously heard 2 farmer/cowboy types saying goodbye to each other at a different petrol station the day before by simply exclaiming "Hope you get wet mate!" - I thought it was just another ironic dessert/Aussie saying or something, but it obviously related to how ... read more

Improved entry. Here goes: The first awareness we had of being in the beginnings of the outback was the heat (naturally). It is difficult to explain how much it affects your mind, your comfort and energy levels. We first noticed this when we'd driven up to Port Augusta after leaving Adelaide. We planned to stop off at the huge jetty in Port Pirie (you'll see in the pictures) to meet some dolphins and get some nice photos and then we'd get on the road into the official outback for our first night in the desert. Just stepping out of our nice air-con van made us realise how HOT it was already, not the kind of heat you get when you step off a plane into a nice pleasant holiday, it's like a smack in the face. ... read more

Here is a belated South Australia entry. We didn't realize how many pictures we'd taken here, so hopefully they will add to the rather meager text I am typing in. So - we crossed the border after completing The Great Ocean Road and stayed over at the very beautiful but not so peaceful Mount Gambier. We then trucked on up towards Adelaide City and after staying on a beach and mooching about town one day we stumbled across the very colourful and energetic Rock & Roll festival (again - detailed in the pictures). Met up with my adventuring Mammy for a light lunch and a few drinks and then decided it was far too hot to be exploring cities so we'd just loafe on all the beaches to the south of Adelaide instead. We did that ... read more

So, after being in Melbourne, we got back out onto the road to enjoy one of the ultimate road-trips you can do in Australia - The Great Ocean Road. We completed this beast in 3 days at a nice steady pace taking many photo's along the way and carrying on with drinking some very fine wines at the completion of each day. On the first day we got as far as Apollo Bay where we saw some amazing Stars and Constellations - even whole Galaxies in a crystal clear night scape - and all for free as we were parked up on the Beach. During the day drove through Geelong, and onto the B100 (G.O.R). Sang along to the Round the Twist theme tune as we realized we were already familiar with Split Point Lighthouse from ... read more

We didn't have that much time in Melbourne, Thom had already stayed there for ages & our schedule was really tight - so we made a quick visit to have some fun on Melbourne Cup Day & catch up with my old pal Angie (from when I lived in Sydney). We think the pictures speak for themselves here so enjoy!... read more

So, after settling into what it's like to live in a van (cosy and novel we'll say at this stage). We stepped on it towards the Hunter Wine Valley. We stayed in the woods in Broke on our first night and it was a shock to say the least, the tin housed dunnie was a big contrast to the En-suite Harbour view room, but we sucked it up & chowed down on the kangaroo chilli I knocked up on the camping stove (first of many feasts - I'm thinking of bringing out a cookery book). In need of an education to add to our joint interest in all things wine we had a great time sampling wines from the Hunter Valley & learned lots from our tour with Tyrell's (great wine & apparently they sell it ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney October 23rd 2007

After a quick couple of days in Melbourne, our trip got officially off to a flyer in Sydney. We touched down on 23rd and were greeted by insane humidity and a billion flies, after a shady airport transfer we stayed in a really rank hostel/"Hotel" in the Cross (Kings Cross) then moved to the very plush Sydney Harbour View Room in O'Malleys. Did the usual city viewing touristy stuff like the Harbour, Opera House, Botanical Gardens. Weather was starting to get worse and much stormier in the lead up to my surprise dinner out for Thom in Sydney Sky Tower. On the morning of this long anticipated night out Thom's first words that morning were pretty choice, but with good reason. Our panoramic Harbour View had been replaced by a whopping grey cloud and the sky ... read more
