We chose to do the least touristy tour we could find, a 3 day 2 nighter staying in the Bidayuh (that's a tribe) Kampung (village) Semban, perched high in the Bungo range just south of Kuching. According to the tour info "the remoteness and difficulty of the terrain has ensured that the village still maintains much of its traditional way of life. The village is known for its last remaining group of old women who still practice the wearing of brass coils on their arms and legs". We were to be met at the start of the trail to the village by our village host and guide and stay with him like extended family. The tour was limited to 7 people. We were the first to book 2 days before but of course this being peak ... read more

We left our accommodation in Miri late morning for the bus station to catch the city bus to the airport. We were gently touted a taxi for 50RM and a private car for 12RM (the bus is 2.60RM each) with stories of the bus takes a long time and it wont leave until later. Just as a taxi driver was telling Marie the bus wouldn't leave for a long time and was very slow the bus driver hopped in and started the engine. 15 minutes later we were at the airport. Less than an hour after boarding we were in Kuching. We were annoyed that we had to pay for cab as there is no bus from the airport to the city. Our lonely mis-guidebook say there is one if you go out and turn left ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sarawak » Miri July 4th 2012

An early start for the 7am bus to Miri 4 and 1/2 hrs away. We left on time with a total of 4 passengers and drove very slowly out of town and along the dual carriageway and to the border. We are guessing there is a speed limit for buses here if so it must be 50, but the slow pace meant we got to take a lot in and we turned off at Seria which is home to Shell Brunei's major installation. The town has low bungalows for the workers and the gurkha troops based there to protect the installations. The oil rigs are quite visible. We swapped buses at Kuala Belait after a 5 minute wait with by now with a total of 10 passengers. The we stopped at a petrol station. The border ... read more

Asia » Brunei » Bandar Seri Begawan July 3rd 2012

The journey back to Kota Kinabalu was pretty uneventful. There was 9 of us leaving camp that day and heading there - us, the 3 English girls and American guy we had travelled out with, another British guy that had been part of our group while we were there and another couple. The jungle bus dropped us off at the 'coffee house' it had picked us up from and the driver gave us the name of the bus company he had arranged to pick us up and told us that the bus would be red and would be there at 10 or shortly after. It was 9:30am, we all crossed the road and sat in the shade of a building. All expect the girls that is, who being typical Brits abroad, flung themselves onto the grass ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Kinabatangan July 1st 2012

To get to the Nature Lodge in Bilit on the Sungai (river) Kinabatangan we had to get a taxi at 6am from Kota Kinabalu to ensure we got to the bus station early enough to get tickets for the 7am bus to Tawau. An American guy, Colin sat near us and was quick to ask if we were going to the Lodge too. We figured the 3 English girls that got on were also heading there. The journey took 5 hrs 30 and we had a spectacular view of Mt Kinabalu. As we weaved our way up to the National Park's entrance gates the view into the distance was exactly how you'd expect Borneo to look - layers upon layers of mountainous ridges covered in thick jungle. The hour and a half we spent going over ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Kota Kinabalu June 27th 2012

Flight number 5 from KL to Kota Kinabalu in Sabah (North East Malaysian Borneo) was an uneventful 2.5 hours. We just had to get up far earlier than we would have liked to catch it. Our next flight is from Kuching in the far west of Malaysian Borneo and isn't for 2 and a half weeks so one the one hand we have plenty of time to get ourselves there, but on the other we have worked out what we want to see and do here and plainly do not have enough time. Everywhere we have been so far has been expensive, we haven't managed a cheap day yet, so when we landed at the airport instead of paying 20 ringgits to take a taxi into town we asked at the information desk and there was ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Wilayah Persekutuan » Kuala Lumpur June 25th 2012

The bus to Kuala Lumpur took 6 hours. We had expected Singaporean transport to be efficient, but we left 15 minutes late and did a second pick up where we seemed to wait for late passengers before finally hitting the road an hour later. The border crossings were very easy and efficient, we figure that the Malaysian speed limits are higher as the driver seemed to put his foot down after we crossed. That would also explain why the Singaporean Ferrari owners club crossed after overtaking us - we counted 16 in the convoy. We overtook them shortly after crossing, they'd all been pulled over by the Malaysian police and there seemed to be a bit of a discussion going on. The bus dropped us somewhere in the city centre, not where we thought we were ... read more

Asia » Singapore June 22nd 2012

There are only 3 places that you can fly to/from Dili; Darwin, Jakarta and Singapore. Since the airport was dead when we landed we were surprised to rock up to catch our flight to Singapore and find it busy. Even the departure lounge was packed, then as our plane landed the Jakarta flight boarded and suddenly the departure lounge was almost empty. Our normal size (think Ak to Wgtn) plane was only a third full if that. We left 15 minutes early and it took just under 3 hours, meaning we got in 35 minutes ahead of schedule! We hopped on the MRT (underground) to get into the city and followed the map to our accomodation. It was early evening and while the humidity was noticeable and it was still hot, after a 10 minute stomp ... read more

Asia » East Timor » Dili June 21st 2012

After the usual breakfast we jumped into the car for Dili via Dare. The fog shrouded the mountains on our way out and the drizzle and cool air meant that we left Maubisse in jumpers. The drizzle was soon behind us though as we lost altitude and by 10:30 the sun was blaring hot and we swapped the thermals for sunscreen. The memorial/museum/cafeat Dare was not as impressive as we had hoped mainly aswe were disappointed about the lack of coffee (ie none) the coffee grown here is strong and black and smooth and we havent yet had a good cup of it – saving it for Dare. But the museum did have a great exhibition about WWII and copies of the flyers dropped from planes by the Australians as they left saying ‘your friends do ... read more

Asia » East Timor » Maubisse June 18th 2012

Our second night in a nunnery was all the peace and tranquility you would expect. The nunnery was on a hill side looking out to sea and we could hear the waves lapping the shoreline. Nuns don't do it tough, the convent was really nice and it even had 3 thatched huts with tables and chairs looking out to sea. We hit the road and followed the coast road back towards Dili until we hit a village called Tibar. There we turned inland and wound our way up the mountains. Some parts of the road were rough from wash outs. A couple of hours later we arrived at a large town called Glenco. Large it may be, but in the guidebook it is not. We bought a couple of bits from the market, but our main ... read more
