After breakfast we caught the school assembly which is held outside and we could see from our balcony. School children regardless of age all wear the traditional dress and lessons are given in English, as is school assembly. Today's speeches were on dealing with change and working with others. We left Haa and followed the river northbound, the road clinging to and weaving around the valley. On the way we went to Lhakahang Karpo (a temple) where the monks were practicing for the coming festival. They formed a large circle in the courtyard at the front of the temple and accompanied by the cymbal were turning and ducking in what looks like it will be an energetic mask dance. Two temporary tents were also set up out the front. One reminded us of a ger with ... read more

We woke as soon as it got light as the room had no curtains but this gave us a good view of the valley below, with some blue sky and sunshine. Having had a brief glance around 5:45am we went back to sleep partly because we were warm and partly because we had spent the night waking up intermittently due to the altitude. At about 3,500m we hadn't struggled with headaches or dizziness but the waking up did get us. We got up at 7am and we had a walk around as the mist rose and fell in the valley with both the mountains and Paro coming into view for fleeting moments. We waited a while for breakfast after packing everything up. Sadly we got mango Kellogs cornflakes which yes, do taste as strange as they ... read more

Asia » Bhutan » Paro September 17th 2012

Our first full day in Bhutan and our first sight on our list was Takshang Goemba (better known as the Tiger's Nest Monatery), the most famous monastery in Bhutan and probably the most iconic image of the country. It perches on the side of a sheer 900m cliff and is said to be held in place by the hair of angels. We awoke to drizzle and fog which basically didn't clear all day, hardly ideal conditions for being in the mountains. Thankfully the drizzle was very light by the time Sangay dropped us at the start of the trail up to Tigers Nest, however it was wet and muddy underfoot. A short way into the hike we passed 3 large prayer wheels, the first we have seen that are water powererd. From there the trail went ... read more

Asia » Bhutan » Paro September 16th 2012

There was low cloud as we landed in Paro and we could see rain down in some of the side valleys. Paro is supossed to be a very dangerous airpirt as the flight path involves weaving between mountians at very close quarters. We felt the plane twisting and turning but couldn't really see anything. The airport is small and pretty casual. We asked at the currency exchange if we could change some indian rupees as this didn't have them up on their board, the ngultrum (Bhutanese) is pegged to the rupee on a 1 for 1. Sure they said, there wasn't even any commission to pay. We literally passed them some money and they paid us back in local currency- it has to be the easiest currency exchange ever. We were met by our guide Pensoc ... read more

The taxi driver to the airport to catch flight number 15 was a bit of a maniac. We were glad it was early on a Sunday morning so it was nice and quiet. In India outside Ladakh we have loved the architecture and enjoyed the company of some of the people we have met (both locals and 'tourists'), the colourfullness is nice and the chaos can be fun. The heat and humidity was manageable, it didn't kill us, but we would have enjoyed it far more if they were both cranked down 2 notches. And we don't mind paying tourist prices in poor countries (as long as they are reasonable) or being touted for business. But we hate the underlying dishonesty and being messed around, by no means is everyone like that but it is so ... read more

Asia » India » National Capital Territory » Delhi September 16th 2012

The final day of our tour started with a 6 hour drive back to Delhi. The countryside scenery as we left Mandawa was really pretty but the inevitably slow drive and the heat in the car made it very hard for us to keep our eyes open and we kept snoozing. Everytime we woke up we hadn't seemed to have gone very far. We had arranged with the tour company to take advantage of having paid for the driver for the day and see a couple of the outlying sights in Delhi that we had wanted to see. On finally reaching Delhi we went to Qutb Minar, a complex of ancient islamic building ruins, including the first mosque to be built in India, summer palaces and the tombs of kings. The Qutb Minar itself is a ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Shekhawati September 14th 2012

Shekawati region is a collection of countryiside towns that is known for it's painted havelis (traditional decorated residences). While now in an out of the way part of the countryside in the 14th century the towns were important trading posts on the caravan routes. We were staying in Madawa in a heritage hotel that is a restored haveli. It was a hot 4 hour drive to get there so we waited until the worst of the afternoon heat had passed before venturing out to explore in the late afternoon. We'd barely left the hotel before we were accosted by 2 young guys who insisted on accompanying us, they weren't guides and said they weren't after money but they just liked to talk to tourists. Initially we gave them heaps of ribbing, did they have a shop? ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Jaipur September 11th 2012

After visiting the Taj, breakfasting and showering, we took a slow 1:30hr drive 40km west down the road to Fatehpur Sikri which was once a fortified city between 1571 and 1585 until the water ran out. The whole of the palace and pavillions are made of red sandstone and was really peaceful. There is a 'green bus' that takes you there from the carpark for 5 rupees which is another pollution control measure. There are much less people visiting here even though it is a world heritage sight. We hopped in and out of the shade and enjoyed looking at the carvings that remain intact amd the scale of the place although it's hard to imagine what it would have been like as a city. We did get a taste of of how life might have ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Agra September 11th 2012

A ridiculously early start for the second morning running. This time to see the Taj Mahal at sunrise. As it had rained on our way to Agra we had opted to see it at sunrise not sunset. Leaving the hotel at 5:45am it was light, relatively cooler and the streets were quiet. Our walk down the road to the nearest point that vehicles can get to the Taj (it got discoloured by pollution so they had to clean it with some ancient recipie, now polluting vehicles aren't allowed within a couple of hundred metres) was really enjoyable. There was no queue at the ticket booth so we quickly had our (expensive 750 rupee) tickets and had collected our 'free' shoe covers and bottle of water. We joined the ladies queue to go through the security check. ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Agra September 10th 2012

Flight number 'we've lost count' involved an early start. It was dark when we got up and there was a powercut but luckily we thought this might be the case and had already packed most of our stuff up and had a torch and candle on standby. Being in Jammu and Kashmir Leh airport has heightened security. You have to show your itinerary and passport to armed police to get into the airport, then show them again to more police before putting your bags through the scanner. Where you also walk through a scanner and get frisked (women get a curtain and disappointingly they didn't do a very thorough job). On to check in then show boarding card and passport to go to another security check area where hand luggage and you go through another scanner ... read more
