Wow the first day of spring actually felt like it here. In talking to Karen back home I guess it was another winter snow storm there. P had his last day of snow board lessons this morning. We had been really worried that he wouldn't get in the lessons yesterday and today as we had downpouring rain all night on Thursday and on friday the hill looked completely saturated. But they worked the hill and it got below zero friday and saturday nights so the hill was actually in pretty good spring skiing conditions. He has really done well with the lessons and was proud of himself today as he was able to turn back and forth on the last part of the run down the hill. If by chance the hill is still open next ... read more

For the end of P's spring break we decided to go visit Claude's aunt Lulu and uncle Roger. They live in the country near a very small town called St. Eusebe that is close to the New Brunswick and Maine borders. On the road from Riviere du Loup to Edmundston NB you head south at the town of Cabano. Anyways I had met them several times but had never been there and the boys were excited that they had horses and cats there. It is a really pretty area of gentle rolling fields and woods. As seems to be our luck there was rain on the drive there and Lulu had said that they had freezing rain earlier int he day so we weren't sure what the small country roads would be like. We also managed ... read more

We had been wanting to go visit the Ice Hotel (Hotel de Glace in French), since it opened in January, but it just hadn't worked to get in there. On the last Friday of Paul's spring break we decided it was now or never. We had stayed in the Ice Hotel in January 2001 as a wedding gift from Karen and Laurel, the first year it opened so we were anxious to see how it had grown and changed. Back then there were just 8 rooms (would be called suites by today's definitions). this year there were a total of 36 rooms, 15 of them suites. The hotel is in a new location this year, the site of the former Zoo in Quebec City. For the last few years it was actually quite close to us ... read more

Spring Break has gone so fast. Since we didn't get back from camping till Tuesday, it has been a short week. P had his second and third snowboarding lessons on Tuesday and Wednesday. Before going he had been complaining that in the first class he didn't get to slide on his own and he had to walk up the hill, and in true P fashion he would "never get to go faster or go down the bigger hill!". Well in these lessons they had him using the chair lift and coming all the way down the big hill. When he came back from the Tuesday lesson he had been freaked out by the chair lift (they had to stop it to get him off), and his instructor made him do "way too much sliding!" Just no ... read more

For the first weekend of P's spring break we had planned a special weekend. He started his break on Thursday so Friday we hit the road headed up to Rimouski just before the Gaspe area to spend Saturday night sleeping in an igloo in Parc National du Bic. By the time we left Friday, the forcast for the weekend was looking iffy as it was supposed to possibly get warm and have some rain on Sunday. We hoped for the best and headed out. We stayed friday night in Riviere du Loup at the Hotel Universel. (about 3 hrs or so from home). We wanted someplace where the boys could have some pool time. M went in the pool briefly but decided it was way colder than Florida so he stuck to the hot tub. Thursday ... read more

The second part of the trip seemed to fly by faster than the first part. Normal I guess. We revisited each of the parks except for Hollywood Studios. Epcot was our favorite so we went there for short days a few times. In the second week we also went out to Cape Canaveral to the Kennedy Space Center for a day. That was a great trip. We all enjoyed it even more than we expected and could have spent an extra day there to see everything. For this blog entry I was going to mostly do my writing right with each photo, but when I previewed the blog about half way through doing it this way I find that it doesn't easily show all that text with the photos so I am cutting it out and ... read more

Time for a Break from the Snow. On Jan 29 we headed to Florida for a 2 week winter vacation. We were meeting up with Karen's family and mom and dad and had rented a house, just like we have done twice before in San Diego. This time it was time to explore DisneyWorld. We had a 10 day park hopper pass with an additional 10 days availalble for water parks, Disney Quest video arcade and golf. What a jam packed holiday it was. This blog covers some highlights from our first few days, up to Feb 3. First day to visit the parks the boys picked Epcot. They wanted to see the giant dome. M absolutely loved the speed of the Test Track ride. His first roller coaster type ride. We had a fun day ... read more

Ice Fishing at Ste. Anne de la Perade We have just finished the most amazing day. It was our coldest day yet this winter (-22C) all day, but it was beautifully sunny and we headed off for a day of ice fishing at Ste-Anne-de-la-Perade (why do Quebec towns have such huge names??). We arrived at about 11 am. It is supposed to be one of the largest ice fishing areas in the world and I believe it. Claude said he even remembers hearing about it as a kid, but never got to come. The brochure said that there are over 600 rental cabins on the river accomodating up to 4000 people each day and each night! The fish that you fish for is called Poulamon or "petits poissons des chenaux" or Tommycod. We booked a little ... read more

Back Skating on Lac Sept-Iles. We got about 4" of snow last night. yeah! Today was a bright sunny warm day so after lunch while P was at school and Claude was at work I decided that I would go skating again. Wasn't sure if the path around the lake would be plowed, but as I got there, there was a whole group of high school students there with phys. Ed. (or so I assume) and there were a few cottagers starting to plow and snow blow the trail. It was a perfect day for skating. I skated over 2.5 km in one direction before I ran out of plowed trail (the kids were skating without the plow being done, but pushing the chariot through the snow was almost impossible), so I turned around. Headed back ... read more

I determined this weekend that Quebeckers (not sure how to spell that!) do winter better than anyone else I know. I think it is because they normally get so much snow but at the same time have relatively mild winter temperatures (as opposed to back home in Alberta). It has typically been about -5 to -10 degrees C this winter, so great weather for being outside. Unfortunately after a good start of snow in late November, we have had basically none since mid December. Ironic that the winter we are away and wishing for snow Edmonton has the most snow it has seen since 1985! Anyways, with no snow we went looking for other winter activities. In the local paper this week they showed two places nearby with networks of skating trails. We decided to check ... read more
