South America » Chile » Aisén » San Rafael Glacier March 10th 2016

We were at sea again all day today cruising the Chilean Fjords at an average speed of 15.3 knots in unrelentingly bleak conditions. After a pretty late breakfast we completed four laps of the promenade deck. Four laps of the deck equals one mile. We are trying to do a bit of exercise despite being cooped up on the ship all day!We think there is an unwritten rule that you are supposed to walk the deck in an anticlockwise direction. That is certainly what the majority of walkers do. However, there always seem to be a couple of walkers swimming against the tide!! We reached the San Rafael Glacier in the middle of the day and spent quite a while admiring its alluring blue face. Our Location Guide, Ryan, was providing commentary over the ship's PA ... read more

South America » Chile » Aisén » Puerto Chacabuco March 9th 2016

Overnight we sailed 283 nautical miles at a average speed of 18.3 knots and at 09:54 we arrived in Puerto Chacabuco where the weather was much more promising than it was yesterday. Bernie looked into using a private tour operator here, but had difficulty contacting them so decided it might be best to book the ship's excursion to Northern Patagonia and Coyhaique City. We drove from Puerto Chacabuco through forested landscape to the Simpson River Reserve and a little further along the road to the Virgin Waterfall. After a brief stop at the waterfall we continued on to Coyhaique City. While the first mountain and valley were quite lush and forested as we continued inland the landscape became much drier and harsher. Coyhaique is the capital of the Aisén region and actually sits high in the ... read more

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Puerto Montt March 8th 2016

This morning we docked in Puerto Montt on a very glum and overcast day. Apparently Puerto Montt's claim to fame is that two of Chile's 20 active volcanoes are on its doorstep. Unfortunately we couldn't see either of them as we rode the tenders to shore this morning. Bernie booked an independent tour operator for today and those arrangements went without a hitch with us finding our guide, Patty, and our driver, Pedro, easily on the dockside. One of the passengers who had booked this tour left a message on our cabin phone to say that his name is Gerry and he's in cabin bleep, bleep, bleep. Unfortunately the space available for the message ran out before he gave us his details. Another passenger on the tour is a Holland America frequent traveller so he had ... read more

After less than 24 hours on board everyone is bemoaning the loss of contact with the outside world and the onboard internet packages have been studied. Bernie has signed up for 250 minutes (US$0.40/minute). I would like to get Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu published seeing as we consider those two days to be a tour highlight but, after that, we might wait until we have free internet access again. We were at sea all day today sailing from Valparaiso toward Puerto Montt. Captain PJ (Pieter Jan van Maurik) announced that we were travelling at an average speed of 17-18 knots which is about twice the speed that we cruised around the Northern Aegean last year. I guess the Mediterranean coastline of Turkey and the Northern Aegean Greek Isles is much more compact than the distances ... read more

This morning we packed our bags for the last time for two weeks because this afternoon we will be moving into a cabins aboard the m.s. Zaandam. Thierry was on hand again this morning to help us with our transfer to the port at Valparaiso. We dropped Gina at the airport on our way out of Santiago. Gina has another tour group in Buenos Aries and then rejoins us there when we disembark. When we arrived in Valparaiso we went for a short drive along the seafront with Thierry pointing out buildings of note. The coach dropped us at the cruise ship check-in building and Thierry arranged for porters to help us with our luggage. Although I'm not entirely sure if they helped because they were pretty rough with our bags!? Once we were in the ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago March 5th 2016

Today was another day lost in transit. Gina is sick of us being seated at the back of the plane (we have consistently been in row 28 of a 29 row aircraft!) because we take so long to get off the plane and join the rest of the group at the baggage carousel so she negotiated for us to be moved closer to the front of the plane (row 8) on our Lima to Santiago leg. Funnily enough we already had seats in row 5 for the Cuzco to Lima leg. Would you believe it?! There were more Kuna outlets at the airport and one of them had the exact same scarf that I first saw. It was in gorgeous mauves and aquas and featured a stylised llama pattern. Most surprising of all was that the ... read more

This morning Gina took those of us who were interested on a walking tour of the San Pedro Produce Market. The market is arranged in sections so when we first entered we were in the clothing section of the market. Each stall holder had a classic old Singer sewing machine ready to undertake alterations and repairs on the spot. I think some of the machines may even have been good old-fashioned Singer treadle machines! Behind the textile section Gina explained the juice bar section to us. There were about three rows of stall holders each in a tiny (maybe one square metre?) booth mixing up juices to order. Gina told us that many of Cuzco's residents stop each morning at their favourite juice stall on their way to work. As we worked our way deeper into ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu March 3rd 2016

After sleeping badly due to worrying about whether our early alarm would go off, we were up as planned at 5.00am to return to Machu Picchu in order to climb Huayna Picchu. We thought that we had ordered 'breakfast to go' but neither the front desk or the restaurant had breakfast boxes for us. Not to worry we just went into the restaurant and made ourselves a very small ham and cheese roll each and grabbed a petite coffee scroll-like pastry. All the serviettes were linen so the staff brought us some aluminium foil to wrap our breakfast in. We shoved our meagre breakfasts into our pockets and headed off for the bus station very excited that the weather was looking perfect for our second morning at Machu Picchu. In preparation for today Bernie purchased our ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu March 2nd 2016

This morning we were up early because we were booked on the 8.00am train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Town). Because our room was so far away from the restaurant we decided to clean our teeth and re-pack our small bags before going down for breakfast. At 7.00am (sharp!) Gregorio collected us from the Casa Andina and drove us to the Ollantaytambo railway station. We had to show our boarding passes and passports repeatedly, presumably to prevent anyone from transferring their ticket to another person? I guess that prevents people from 'scalping' the tickets at an inflated price? We were all very excited as we pulled out of Ollantaytambo because the sky was blue and the sun was shining - it was looking postcard perfect for our visit to Machu Picchu. As we made ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Ollantaytambo March 1st 2016

Last night/this morning we had to pack enough stuff to take us through the next two days because we can only take a very small amount of luggage with us on Wednesday when we catch the train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes. After breakfast we headed back upstairs to clean our teeth and pack our toilet bags. We literally set foot in the room when I was struck with a mild bout of TD. OMG, I have to be cooped up on a bus most of the day not knowing when the next toilet stop will be! Bernie had a similar problem the day we set off to visit Santa Fe Island in the Galápagos - although there was a toilet on the boat, unlike the bus which has no such amenity. He took a Travelan ... read more
