Overnight one of our group was stuck down with the dreaded TD so it was only 13 of us (plus Gina and Breytzi) who walked down to the front of the Dominican Convent of Santo-Domingo to board a bus that would take us on a tour of the Incan ruins to be found in and around Cuzco. First we headed up to the fortress of Saqsaywaman along some very narrow, windy streets. On one particularly tight hairpin bend our driver Gregorio had some difficulty squeezing the bus through. The driver coming down the hill didn't want to back up to give Gregorio some room to move so we were at a standstill for a few minutes with the bus wedged between cars parked on both sides with only millimetres to spare! Eventually a motorcycle policeman arrived ... read more

After only a few hours sleeping at the airport hotel in Lima it was time to head back to the airport to check in for our flight to Cusco, Peru. Lima Airport was crazy, busy! Thank goodness we had Gina to facilitate our passage through check-in and security. I'm sure it would have taken us much longer on our own! When we passed through security we saw a huge Perspex container that contained sharp objects that have been confiscated. It was quite shocking what people had in their carry-on bags - full-size scissors, not just small, manicure scissors and all sorts of knives, including at least one 12 inch cook's knife that I could see!! Do people walk around all the time with these sorts of things in their handbags and then just forget they have ... read more

We spent all day today travelling between the Galápagos Islands and Lima, Peru. Ugh! We all wished we could stay a week at the Royal Palm Hotel, but we had to head to Peru our next exciting South American destination. So, at 9.30am we were picked up and bussed back to the Itabaca Canal. We crossed the canal and then transferred to another bus that took us to the airport. It was very slow checking in because the computer was down. The plan was to check our bags through to Lima so that we wouldn't have to collect them and re-check them at Quito. Since the check-in staff were doing the job manually it was beyond them to check our bags through to our final destination. C'est la vie. I felt sorry for them having to ... read more

Today we went out on the boat again, this time to Santa Fe Island. It took us about an hour and a half to motor over to the island. I know I found it very hard to stay awake as the Altamar rolled gently from side to side as she motored along into a head wind. I don't think that I was the only one who had a little snooze on the way either! On our way were were treated to sightings of some turtles and a couple of sea lions. When we arrived at the island our boat was able to pull into the sheltered bay very close to the sea lion colony. We were ferried ashore again in the inflatable dinghy right onto the beach covered with lounging sea lions. Felipe pointed out the ... read more

Today we were given the option of walking 2.5km to a surf beach or 3km to a sheltered beach OR walking to the Charles Darwin Research Centre at the end of the main street. Everyone had actually decided last night that the swimming option sounded lovely BUT a very hot and very humid 3km walk back into town for lunch did not. Gina was able to tell Daniela of the groups' decision last night so she arrived this morning ready to escort us to the research centre rather than take us swimming. Thank goodness we decided to forego the swimming, even the short walk to the outskirts of town was very, very hot, and quite enervating, but we managed it with a few stops in the shade of trees along the way. At the research centre ... read more

We had an early start this morning for our excursion to North Seymour Island. Felipe was our National Park Service guide today. He arrived at 7.00am with a bus and driver to take us back to the other side of Santa Cruz Island to board the boat that would be taking us to North Seymour. On the way Felipe told us that North Seymour Island is located just to the north of Baltra Island and that Baltra Island was actually called South Seymour Island until WWII. It was nicknamed Baltra during the war to confuse the Japanese if they intercepted communications. Since then it has continued to be called Baltra. At the Itabaca Canal we had to don very elegant red life preservers to be ferried across to the motor launch in an inflatable boat with ... read more

After an even more extensive breakfast buffet this morning it was time to head back to Guayaquil (pronounced why - a - kwill) airport for our flight to the Galápagos Islands. One of the main advantages of travelling in a group is having tour guides to facilitate your way through airports! Gina headed off to a counter to pay the $20 National Parks fee for each of us while Daniel facilitated our passage through the X-ray screening point. If we had been on our own we would have had to queue for each one separately. After a bit more sitting around at an airport departure gate it was time to board another aeroplane, this time for a two hour flight to Batra Island in the Galápagos Archipelago. After landing it was more queueing. First we queued ... read more

The air conditioning in our room didn't manage to bring the room temperature below 20°Celsius all night which made for hot and uncomfortable sleeping conditions. Despite that, and our body clocks trying to adjust to South American time, we managed to sleep for a few hours, although this was interspersed with a certain amount of wakefulness. We set an alarm for 7.00am and managed to get ourselves going about 7.20am so that we could have a leisurely breakfast before meeting our tour guide, Terry, in the foyer at 10.00am. The hotel had a delicious array of fruit, cereal, cooked breakfast and pastries to select from. We did our best to keep our calories in check choosing to start with fruit and cereal with natural yoghurt. Although that's all we would normally eat Bernie was tempted to ... read more

Bernie came in from his White Night exploration at about 2.30am and crawled into bed to sleep for an hour before the alarm went off. I was only vaguely aware that he had arrived home! Ugh, the alarm went off at 3.30am and I staggered out of bed and into the bathroom for a very quick shower. I cleaned my teeth again even though it was only about three hours since I last cleaned them! A big THANK YOU to Kerry for driving us to Tullamarine Airport at the very unfriendly time of 4.00am! We arrived at the airport about 4.32am only to find that while check-in for our flight was open, the International Departures Lounge doesn't open until 5.30am. After checking our bags we had to wait near the check-in corrals for almost an hour ... read more

Well, when did this holiday actually start? The line between being on holidays and not being on holidays has blurred for me since I stopped working!! However, the worker in the family finished up at the office on Friday so I reckon that's about when we started our vacation. In which case we spent the first morning of our latest travel adventure finishing off washing and cleaning the house so it would be neat and tidy for the house sitters. We also managed to fit in a walk with Gidget and Finbar before Kerry arrived to have a quick lunch with us before driving us all back to her place. At Kerry's I re-packed my bag after finally admitting that the only way my hiking boots would be going to South America was on my feet! ... read more
