Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica January 24th 2017

Geo: 9.98102, -84.8392What a different country is Costa Rica! After the poverty ofNicaragua this was an immediate change. Sure, they have their poor people likeeverywhere but as soon as we arrived it was clear that this was a prosperouscountry. In fact their immigration “problem” is that lots of Nicaraguans comedown for work and do the jobs the Costa Ricans don't want to do. The economy isbased on coffee production, money coming in from overseas and tourism. They arethe only country in the world to have no standing army. The army was abolishedin 1948 and all the money that was spent on defence was spent on education withthe result that they now have a 97% literacy rate. If only the rest of theworld would follow suit. They also havea welfare state with the equivalent of national contributions ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Nicaragua January 23rd 2017

Geo: 12.4379, -86.878Nicaragua, in the middle of Central America, looks on the surface like Guatemala with flat low plains given over to agriculture rising up to highlands composed of lines of volcanoes with some of the largest lakes in Central America. Unfortunately because the country has been ravaged by many wars and corrupt government it is obviously much poorer than Guatemala. There were a lot more people living in the small shacks with very little decent housing to be seen. Perhaps it is different in the capital, Managua, but that was too far away to get to.In 1524 the Spanish Conquistadors founded the city of Leon on the edge of Lake Managua. The nearby volcano erupted in the 1600s and covered the town in volcanic ash rather like Pompeii. So the town moved away from the ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Guatemala January 22nd 2017

Geo: 13.9154, -90.7993Guatemala was the heart of the Mayan world. They built their huge temples in the north and collected jade from the south where the Pacific and Caribbean tectonic plates meet resulting in frequent earthquakes which throw up the jade from lower in the earths crust. There are also 33 volcanoes in the country several of them still active. The Spanish came along and colonised the country in 1527 so the language is mostly Spanish but some Mayan still exists. Originally it was the largest country in Central America but politics caused the country to be changed in the 30s in order to make what is now Belize and Honduras. Antigua was the first capital of Guatemala and is a very Spanish colonial town built up in the hills where it is much cooler than ... read more

Geo: 16.978, -100.212It is sunny most of the year round here in Acapulco. There are 3 bays, the main one being Acapulco Bay which is lined with long sandy beaches and marinas. The Bay of Marques has the houses of the rich and famous built on the cliffs overlooking the bay. At one time Frank Sinatra, John Wayne and Elizabeth Taylor all had houses here. Salvador Dali had his honeymoon here and loved the place as also did Johnny Weissmuller who played the original Tarzan. He loved it so much he lived and died here. There are many of the old films which have some shots which were filmed here such as the "Monster of the Black Lagoon", "Rambo" and "The African Queen".Nowadays it has become built up with modern hotels , bars and restaurants and ... read more

North America » Mexico » Baja California January 18th 2017

Geo: 22.88, -109.9Cabo San Lucas is a small holiday resort in Mexico. It is really a cheap place for a holiday especially for people who like beaches and water sports. The marina is a pleasant place to walk around and there are numerous trips offered to go fishing, whale watching or parasailing, which did look good and I would like to try it one day. We did not have an official tour booked so just strolled around, had a beer and strolled back. We heard later that the tours were a bit pathetic so glad we did our own thing. The ship was moored in the bay so we were tendered in. The 7 Seas Navigator was also moored in the bay. It was on a world cruise and left before we did ,sailing all the way ... read more

Geo: 32.7157, -117.162A brief word about the ship which left Los Angeles at 6pm and arrived in San Diego the following morning having sailed very slowly. (It is only a 3 hour drive!) The Seven Seas Explorer is a new ship which has been dubbed by the company, Regent, as the most luxurious cruise ship ever built. It is very well appointed with lots of marble and rather dark furnishings- too dark for my taste. The art works are also not what I would have purchased but art is a personal thing. The cabin is very nicely designed with a huge balcony. Only hope there will be enough sun to enable me to sit on it! We soon settled into our usual routine which is mainly based around food and drink! Champagne on the balcony to ... read more

North America » United States » California » Los Angeles January 15th 2017

Geo: 34.0533, -118.245I never realised Los Angeles was so huge. The county itself is massive with lots of different areas which are small cities in themselves and all merge into the main city. It is not a city you can walk around in a day and you certainly need a car if you are going to see anything at all. We were very fortunate to stay with friends in West Hills, one of the suburbs in the North west of the county. Our wonderful hosts kindly drove us all around the place. Poor things had to wait ages at the airport as it took about 3 hours from when the plane landed to getting out of the airport. Be warned. The queues for passport control were the longest we had seen anywhere in the world. On ... read more

Geo: -33.8671, 151.207We were sad to leave our beautiful daughter in Nelson Bay and head off south to Sydney. It took us about 2 1/2 hours to get to our hotel. Would have been slightly earlier but the sat nav on my phone is not as good as it could be. Great apartment at 5 York Street on the 23rd floor with balconies overlooking Sydney. Once settled in we decided to return our hire car but as we hadn't been given the proper drop off address by Thrifty this took us quite a while. Please note anyone returning a car - it is in the ground floor of the Domain car park and it is not at all sign posted!Walked back ,stopping at Hyde Park for a beer- we were just too late for lunch there ... read more

Geo: -32.7171, 152.155Australians are a friendly informal bunch of people and none more so than Helen's friends, who arrived in boats, planes, vans and cars on Friday and Saturday. We went up to her place on her birthday which was on Friday Dec 2nd and had champagne and present opening in the morning and then down to the Rock Lobster for lunch for 12 of us. Lovely to meet old friends and new. More people arrived on Saturday which was the day of the party and the whole road was lined up with their vans and cars. The party in the evening was freaky dress so Helen had the apartment appropriately decked out with freaky stuff and there were some amazing costumes, disco, loads of beer and wine and not too much food! I think we ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Nelson Bay November 28th 2016

Geo: -32.7171, 152.155We reached Nelson Bay by taking a flight from Melbourne to Newcastle and then hiring a car. Helen met us at the airport- fantastic to see her again. She knew the way so no maps needed. Our spacious apartment has 3 double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a pool and BBQ deck surrounded by palms. We had booked it by Air BnB. in particular because it is only 10 to 15 minutes walk from Helen's house to which we then went. Finally we met Metta the dog in the flesh. She really is beautiful. Helen's house is really attractive and although she has plans for future improvements, it is lovely as it is. We finally unwound and had drinks and snacks on her patio. I went with her to Bingall Beach, which is dog friendly and ... read more
