Lincoln

We are 3 travel junkies working towards as many fun times/passport stamps/world-wide friends and adventures/and lasting memories as we can possibly manage.

(I like sauerkraut, wurst, beer served by waitresses with big jugs, BMW's, Jägermeister, lederhosen, thigh slapping to oompah bands (preferably someone elses) and glühwein........ I'm thinking Germany may be the go!!
I also ride a Vespa, eat too much pizza, and am crazy about Roman engineering ingenuity. Natalie loves a good vino, leather shoes/handbags, art, food and cooking and Kohen loves gelato..... our next destination was a no brainer.)

Europe » Spain » Castile-La Mancha » Toledo December 9th 2015

We had a 2:50pm train to Toledo, which was thankfully only a 30 minute trip. Our landlady, Mercedes, had informed us that we could leave the apartment whenever we liked, so that made it easier to do some sight-seeing without luggage. We set out in the morning to the park behind our apartment with the Egyptian temple to get some photos of Madrid and just enjoy the views from up there. It was cold, but not ridiculous. I had got by without gloves and beanie so far, and that morning was the coldest we had experienced yet. It looked like the Spanish winter was going to be a lot more forgiving than Germany. We had a short walk through another park where Kohen and I could film some scenes for our upcoming movie. (We are currently ... read more

Europe » Spain » District of Madrid » Madrid December 8th 2015

Still waking early – so made the most of it and headed out for an early morning run (Just me, the street cleaners and the homeless under the bridge out and about at 6:00am) Indulged in some more bridge-spotting and made a circuit down to the Puente de Toledo across the Rio Manzanares. (Quite a nice Baroque style bridge from the 1700s – now just pedestrian access). I had written Madrid off, in hindsight a little unfairly, as just another big city with nothing more of interest than a few museums (which are not normally that big on our agenda anyway). Therefore, the plan for Madrid was to spend just a few days and move on quickly. Today, we planned a reasonably easy day with a stroll down the Calle Mayor, taking in some churches, the ... read more

Despite my weariness, I was awake sparrow-fart and tossed and turned until finally giving up the dream of sleeping like a normal person around 5:30am. Kohen managed to sleep longer (ahh…the blessed ability to sleep through anything that we seem to lose with adulthood). Anyway, we were all soon up and about and looking forward to checking out the Spanish capital. The apartment was nice and spacious, with everything we could want and views forever. Best of all, Kohen had his own room and a real bed (not always the case with some apartments we’ve had before). We were told at the airport that our luggage would be delivered between 2-6pm, and we would need to be at the apartment to take delivery. Major bummer – this would put a big hole in our opportunity to ... read more

Middle East » United Arab Emirates » Dubai December 6th 2015

Our usual airline of choice (Korean Air) would have had us leaving Brisbane at the civilised time of 8:30am. Alas, not this time. We chose to fly Emirates, which had the unfortunate departure time of 2:30am. We were in for a long Sunday – 33 hours to be exact! Thankfully, check-in at Brisbane Airport was a breeze (not too many queues at that hour) and we were on our way. While I opted for a last minute kip on the comfy lounges, Kohen spotted our pilots and had a chat to them. To his delight, they offered for him to visit the cockpit once we were aboard. We had no sooner boarded, found our seats and dumped our gear before a hostess ushered us up to the pointy end of the plane. Kohen had a blast ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome August 30th 2012

Our apartment was located in Testaccio, a neighbourhood to the south of the Centro Storico. We chose the area as it was walking distance to the centre, yet hopefully would be off the normal tourist trail. It also had the added bonus of a neighbourhood square/playground which, as it turned out, proved to be a social hub for the area without tour buses, photo clicking tourists (well maybe just 3) or the crazy hustle/bustle that would otherwise define our time in Rome. Testaccio turned out to be our little oasis in the Eternal City, and provided some much needed downtime to recharge from the sensory overload that is Rome. The apartment was quite spacious and well equipped and provided all that we needed. The only downside was that Rome was still very hot, and our apartment ... read more

..... and I howled at my ma in the drivin' plane (Sung to the tune of Jumpin' Jack Flash). Firstly, my apologies for the Stones reference straight up, but those who know me well will forgive this slight indulgence. Secondly, apologies to Mick and Keith for butchering those immortal opening lines. In my defence, the hurricane reference is completely valid. We left for Incheon, Korea heading towards the destructive force of Typhoon Bolaven. The day before we left it had already made a mess of some islands in Japan, and was headed north for the Korean peninsula the same day we were due to arrive. Unfortunately this translated into a four hour delay leaving Brisbane. Anyway, the day started at 4:30, and thankfully Kay stayed over to drive us to the airport. So there we were ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Sulzfeld am Main December 30th 2010

Sulzfeld am Main proved to be everything we expected. Beautiful narrow cobbled streets, old medieval towers in the village walls, quiet, non-touristy and authentic. This is the side of country Germany we were hoping to see without the hype and hoopla of dodgy knick-knack shops and coaches full of day-tourists. Sulzfeld didn’t have a stack of “boutique” shops, or happening night-spots, but it had charm and quaint character by the bucket-loads. On our arrival on Tuesday 7 December, we were met by the very friendly Herr and Frau Eberl who showed us the tower apartment (Jocklerturm) we would call home for the next week. The apartment is built into/onto the original town wall, which can still be seen encircling almost all of the original part of town. The base of the tower (which was circular stone) ... read more

Europe » Germany » Hesse » Frankfurt am Main December 7th 2010

Finally – Deutschland, and the longest bloody Monday I’ve ever had. (32 hours to be exact – as we flew to outrun the sunset) After disembarking at Frankfurt International Airport, I couldn’t help but recall a story from Keith Richards (a close personal friend of mine who also just happens to play guitar!) as to how someone threw a frankfurter at him on stage in Frankfurt, and then at a concert in Hamburg (well you can guess what was thrown at him whilst there!). Fortunately, we didn’t have to duck from any flying German cuisine. It was with baited breath that I waited for unsere Gepäke (our bags) to discover if they had made the connecting flight and also as to how the grog survived. My day-pack was the last to come off the carousel, and.................... ... read more

Asia » Mongolia » Ulaanbaatar December 6th 2010

Finally have had a chance to sit and type an entry – it’s currently Monday afternoon (day 2) and we’re in the air over Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia as we make our way from Korea to Germany. (Although who would know – the world outside is a foggy expanse of mist and late afternoon sunset). Trying to type one-handed on Nat’s iPod while listening to a bit of Black Joe Lewis (who I might add is one of the funkiest dudes around – check it out if you like some old school funk or soul tunes). Currently doing it tough – asked for another Jack Daniels but they’ve run out. Will have to slum it with the other peasants and make do with the 12 year old Chivas the lovely young lass brought instead! (Seriously folks – Korean ... read more

Hi all, Well we are finally getting close to being ready to leave - not long now (5th December). Hopefully lessons learnt from last year’s escapade in France will ensure smooth sailing this time around (at least I won’t be lugging a 20km duffel bag this time!). Unfortunately, there's no guarantee that I won’t try to wipe out some poor cyclist again as I come to grips with driving back-to-front. As long as I can keep out of the fast lane of the Autobahns, I should be able to avoid copping a 911 in the boot. We've bought ski suits here - crazy in some ways; but actually cheaper, and at least we'll have them earlier in the trip if our un-acclimatised (is this a word?) Antipodean limbs start to seize up. Anyway, thanks to suction ... read more
