LA Lakers and the Grammy Museum By Mike Lovin’ our sport as we do another prearranged and much anticipated event was the Lakers v the Pelicans at the Staples Centre in LA. We woke up and checked out of the Bellagio in good time and made a bee line for LA – no stops – so we got there with a chance to get organised. The closest RV Park we could get was 50 miles out of the city so we thought it best to stay in the city after the game and we found the Milner Hotel a few blocks from the venue. A train ride into town and a cab to the hotel meant we were in town about two hours before the game. Perfect. We wondered through to the Staples Centre for an ... read more

The Strip By Michelle So I’m going to start by saying I LOVE VEGAS! I unashamedly love the glitz, the glamour, the bright lights, the frequently tacky and cringe worthy! For our four days of luxury we are staying at the Bellagio. OMG it’s gorgeous! It’s like a little mini city and at all time busy busy. From the spectacular horse in the entry way to the ceiling feature of huge blown glass flowers to the Asian themed conservatory. The rooms are stunning and we have a gorgeous view of the pool complex with the snow topped mountains in the background. Also to prove a point that Jacob never reads our blogs I will add in here that separate rooms halfway into the trip have provided a rather welcome respite from one another for a few ... read more

San Francisco to Las Vegas By Michelle So right now we’re actually driving from Las Vegas (having spent an INCREDIBLE four days there) to Los Angeles. The teen is doing the teen thing and is using the time to catch up on sleep. Mike’s driving and I’m in the passenger seat navigating. Yoda (tomtom voice) doesn’t need me to give any instructions for another 169kms so I thought I’d use the opportunity to catch up our blog a little. We’ll sort out a Vegas blog in the next few days as there is so much to talk about! An incredible four days as mentioned and so busy we barely got time to sleep and definitely no time to be sitting on a laptop writing a blog entry! This post is about the journey from San Francisco ... read more

Downtown San Francisco By Michelle Had a few dramas catching public transport yesterday so it was with trepidation that we had another crack at it today. Got to the bus stop and along came the bus. Off the bus and the train arrived immediately. Brilliant, haven’t wasted half a day again! So the plan for today was to do the Downtown tour on the hop on hop off bus. Got on the bus and got off at Union Square the centre of the high end shopping district. In the middle of the square was a massive Christmas tree and an outdoor skating rink – cool! Coffees and croissants and we were ready to get into it. To cut a long story short we’re in a shop and Jake’s talking to a girl. Go over and he ... read more

Santa Maria and Carmel By The Sea By Michelle So after our dodgy experience in Malibu we drove on to discover Santa Barbara. What a gorgeous spot. We arrived as it was getting dark so had a wee walk as we watched the sun set over the hills (beautiful) then found a local RV park to stay at. Monday 28th and we slept in until 9:30, we’re starting to get tired! Went into Santa Barbara and walked the pier until we found a place to get coffees. We had a good look around and decided this place is awesome. Left around lunchtime bound for Santa Maria. Beautiful drive through the Los Padras National Park but we didn’t understand why the landscape seemed so bare. Found out later that the area had recently been destroyed by fire! ... read more

The Start by Mike After a fab Xmas we did the last of our preliminary packing and readied ourselves for our afternoon flight to LA. Things were pretty cruisy in the morning due to some preparation and having time on our hands. The wonderful Tevita Viliami (David Williams for you palagi) picked us up at 11.30am on the dot. I was so musy chatting to him I was sitting in the car waiting for Michelle to get her shit together and a voice comes down from the top of the drive…”ready to go are we?” “Yes dear” I said trying to be as polite as I could… ”Do you want to take your wallet and phone then?” trying to be as polite and unsarcastic as she could…crisis averted! I run up to the kitchen trying to ... read more

Whoop, whoop, two more sleeps to go! Bags are partially packed and we think things are in order??? Anyhoo for those of you who will follow our travels I hope we provide as much entertainment for you as our Europe trip did whilst not providing us with as much drama. Oops remembered our mantra "it's all part of the adventure right?." Jacob will continue the role of light hearted entertainer and parent slayer and Mike and Michelle will fulfil the roles of tourist amateurs. If and I mean IF things go to plan (erm yep right given our past history!) the idea is that we land in LA on the morning of the 26th and collect our RV camper van. Our travels for the following few weeks take us us the Pacific Coastal Highway as far ... read more

The trek to Bangkok by Mike We departed the ship early morning and got an excursion which for us was as much about getting our luggage to the airport as anything else. We went to a couple of places we had already seen like Hagia Sophia although we went to a different area which was nice. It was still a buzz seeing it again too. We went to the Hippodrome – the venue of sporting contests in ancient times. Chariots would ride in and race here. There was also a pillar brought from Egypt to Constantinople which was cool as didn’t get there. We took tons of photos for you Carl! We then went to the Chora Museum which was a church and it contains some of the most beautiful mosaic. Then there was the trek ... read more

Santorini by Michelle What an amazing island! We were tethered in the port so had a leisurely breakfast then caught the ferry boat onto the island. Santorini is an incredibly beautiful island with the buildings set up high in hills. Hard to describe but the classic Greece ‘whitestone buildings with blue accents’ prints show it perfectly. It is actually a volcanic mountain so you choose one of three ways up. 1) Walk up steep terrain for approx 45 minutes 2) Steep but fast gondola to the top 3) Donkey ride to the top. Mike will cover off his option but Jake and I chose the gondola. Three minutes flat to go up a very long way! As we approach each ridge it feels like we are about to hit the rock walls but thankfully they have ... read more

Rhodes by Michelle I woke up in the port of Rhodes and looked out the porthole to get my bearings. WOW – there’s a castle outside the window! After breakfast we walked into the old fortified town of Rhodes and had an explore. Our first observation of the shopkeepers is whilst (like the Turkish one) they still say “yes please, yes please, come on in please”, they aren’t as pushy. A simple no thankyou or just browsing is acceptable which meant we were actually able to browse. Mike and Jacob had been dying to get a new chess set and the lure of a Greek mythology set made out of alabasta was too hard to pass up (despite the continuing issues we have with increasing luggage weight). Wanting a cold drink and a snack we made ... read more
