It is just 5 days until Leanne, Nathan and I head off on our 7 month adventure to Europe and South America. We have been thinking about this trip for ages, but never got the chance to make concrete plans until quite recently, so I guess that adds to our excitement. There is not much left to do; pack some more boxes, send the cars off to their new homes and hop on a plane on the 30th June. Even so, I know we will be busy until the very last minute. That is just the way we are! The plan is to spend over three months on each continent. We land in Heathrow first and have 6 days in England. Then off to Greece for about a month, but we have nothing booked anywhere so ... read more

This story begins in Los Angeles. Because we discovered that 32 hours of non stop air travel isn't very fun, we decided to break up our journey back to Oz. We had one day to spend in LA, so we went by bus to see Venice Beach and Santa Monica. That was a very long way (took about 1 hour). You don't realise how big this city is by looking at a map. Venice beach didn't live up to my expectations. It was not like I'd seen on TV. Just an ordinary concrete path beside a very nice beach. I can do that at home. The legal Marajuana sellers were different though. They have a list of ailments which doctors can prescribe Marajuana for and you just walk in to tell the doc which one you ... read more

Todo bien hombre is our new saying which means "All good man!" we have managed to improve our Spanish a bit by being here. So after 2 ruins in 2 days in Merida we headed to a place called Valladolid which was also a nice colonial town and a great stepping off point for the most famous ruin - Chichen Itza. Unfortunately our bus was late and we didn´t arrive at Chichen Itza until 3.30pm. We walked around (thinking it closed at 5.30pm) but it closed at 4.30pm so we didn´t get to see the observatory :-( Apparently the Mayan priests were great mathemeticians and quite into their astronomy lining up stars and positions of the sun etc when building these great pyramids. The pyramid there was amazing though, and interestingly, during the equinox the sun ... read more

North America March 10th 2011

After our unexpected detour to Panama, we got to Mexico City very late and very tired. I thought we had also missed our chance to see a soccer match in Mexico city as most games are played on Saturday. But we were lucky, the biggest team from mexico city, Club America, played a home grame on Sunday afternoon at Estadio Azteca, which has a capacity of 114,000 spectators. So Leanne and I got there just in time and bought some Club America shirts and saw them win a very exciting game 4-3. We were a bit of a novelty (perhaps Leanne was the novelty more so than I was). We were shown on the big screen 4 separate times thoughout the game and half time break. So we just kept having good luck and everything kept ... read more

Wildlife!!! Lots of it, so I was in my element. I totally loved this place for its wildlife diversity. We were so lucky to have seen whales on 2 occasions. Just some final points of note: Macaws are interesting birds. We found out that the white skin of their faces turns pink/red if they get excited...yes they blush! So if you talk really sweetly to them and tell them they are a pretty boy etc they blush! So funny... My feet and ankles.....they really do expand! Whenever I go on a long walk or get tired they swell up, and get quite painful. On one of the days I went a bit too far and got these ugly red kinda bruises around my ankles which I was paranoid wouldn't go away but thankfully they have now. ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » Puntarenas February 21st 2011

Last entry we finished up in Quepos at the rodeo/bull fight. But the main reason for going to quepos is to see Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio. This is one of Costa Rica's smallest national parks and we only saw a very small part of it I think. But we paid for a guide who had a telescope and he pointed out so many interesting animals and plants as we walked. Through the telescope we got a great view and great photos of spiders, a toucan, sloths (Yay! I really wanted to see them) Iguanas, insects, frogs and snakes. We also had lunch on a beach where a heap of campuchin monkeys put on a show and tried to steal packs of chips etc from tourists. There were also racoons who were not shy either. Manuel Antonio ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » Guanacaste » Samara February 18th 2011

Well its been a while I know, but we have been busy on our holiday, so sorry to those of you who were waiting for an update! I´ll pick up where Jon left off....Samara. This is our favourite place. We ended up staying for 6 nights and I pretty much got into a nice routine here. In the morning after a nice healthy breakfast Jon would head off to the beach as he was learning to surf (another activity that I coudn´t participate in) whilst I went to the local cafe and had a morning coffee. This cafe was on the beach under some nice palm trees, just heaven!! The place we were staying was like a fully self contained apartment. One night we had dinner at a restaurant on the beach that was renowned for ... read more

Dear friends and family of Jon and Leanne, whilst you guys slave away at work, we thought we'd give you a hand and try to help you through your tiresome day by telling you about the awesome experiences we are having at the moment. Number One: Last night I felt the baby kick for the first time. Leanne had been trying to make the baby do it whilst I had my hand on her tummy for weeks, but telepathy doesn't seem to work with foetuses. So finally by good luck, I felt a tiny little tap on my hand. I'm not able to predict if the baby will be a stong enough kick to make it in the AFL yet, but the signs are promising. Anyhow, you probably know that Costa Rica is a long way ... read more
