Day 37 - Swakopmund - 4/9/09 Woke up with added excitement this morning as Pascal, Danielle, Cat and Duncan were getting into Swakopmund this morning. Wondered over to the Swakop Lodge, where they were staying, at 10 and was greeted in reception by a Duncan sized hug. We all chatted, told our stories and what we had been up to since we departed company. We all went into the Far Out Booking Office, which was attached to the Swakop Lodge to see what extreme activities were available to do. In the end we booked some sand boarding, it was about midday by the time we finished so we went out for a spot of lunch. We went to the Lighthouse Cafe for lunch and I ordered a Jaeger Schnitzel; 2 ornx fillets in breadcrumbs in mushroom ... read more

Day 34 - Windhoek (Namibia) - 1/9/09 Arrived in Windhoek in the early afternoon; making my way outside the terminal to the airport shuttle bus. Like most other buses I've tried to use since I've been here in Africa it wasn’t leaving until it was full. The airport shuttle cost $150NB against the taxi which would cost $280NB, a local lady came out of the airport building; she started rooting around in her handbag looking for a business card for a taxi; I just sat there and watched here waiting for the shuttle bus to fill up. She couldn’t find this business card and didn’t look overly happy. She become doubly unhappy when she heard the price of the taxi so she started trying to negotiate with the taxi driver; she turned round to me and ... read more

Day 31 - Molumong (Lesotho) - 29/8/09 We left the Sani Lodge at 0900 with our tour guide Michael, on the tour with me there were 4 Dutch girls who were travelling together. We travelled though the roads of the Drakensburg Mountains to reach the Sani Pass and the Lesotho border pass, we went in a 4X4 as its the only type of vehicle that could make it up there. As a gentlemen and somebody travelling by myself took the back of the 4X4. Proceeding through the mountain range was a slow and very bumpy task, the roads were windy and the scenery getting more and more dramatic the higher and higher we went. The more we went on, the more and more bumpy the road got, with me hitting my head on the roof, the ... read more

Day 26 - Jo'burg (South Africa) - 24/8/09 Woke up this morning in Damien's room knowing that it would be a very emotional day as everybody who I had been travelling with for the last 3 weeks would be heading off to Jo'burg or to Cape Town whilst I was flying down to Jo'burg to start my 5 weeks independent adventure. Everybody was waking up and I wondered over to the Anna's tent to find out what had happened to Juliette. It turns out that she had stayed out all night and still wasn’t back, I helped Anna take her tent down. Everybody was at breakfast and I managed to sneak my last breakfast on the truck (thanks Robin!), eggs on toast. When it was time for everybody to go, it was a time for tears ... read more

Day 24 - Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) - 22/8/09 Woke up relatively early to go white water rafting. The transfer to the falls came at 0745. We finally arrived, filling in waivers so in the case of our death our relatives could not sue the company. We went though all the different rapids, they all had names to put the fear of god in you; The Devil's Toilet Bowl and The Gnashing Jaws of Death, just to name a few. Jumping back into the truck BK was our guide on the Zambezi, we all introduced ourselves and we ask BK why he was called BK, he told us that it was to do with the fact that his first name had 38 letters in it and nobody could say it. We got to the spot where the ... read more

Day 20 - Chipata (Zambia) - 18/8/09 Today, we were crossing the boarder into our 4th country, Zambia. Before this we stopped in Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi, for a few supplies for the journey. Me, Cat, Duncan, Kane, Emma, Erin and Brodie all went for breakfast in a local hotel. It was only 1000 and Duncan and Me were all ready hitting the Carlsberg! A sign perhaps? The staff really messed up the order with parts of everybody’s orders coming out at different times. Having brought our souvenirs and supplies from the supermarket, we all bundled back into the truck for the drive out of Malawi and into Zambia. The border was a ramshackle affair; the building we got stamped out of Malawi was ok looking but the building were we went to get stamped ... read more

Day 15 - Chitimba (Malawi) - 13/8/09 Another early start, this time around 0600. Found my flip flops; they were left outside my tent. Climbed onto the great big green truck for now, the almost routine long drive though the African bush, was really looking forward to reaching another country, country number 3, Malawi. Again I fell asleep for a couple of hours, then when I was awoken by the sun beams burning my legs though the windows, finished reading my book, which I then swapped with Duncan. He was reading Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman's Long Way Down. It seemed, given where I was almost fitting that I should be reading it. I managed to knock back 100 pages pretty quickly then we got some card games going. We counted up how many Tanzanian Shillings ... read more

Day 13 - Dar Es Saleem - 11/8/09 We left at 0900 again and only 1 minibus turned up. With number swelling due to people arriving here early needing to be picked up as well there were too many of us for the one minibus. A second one arrived and it was pure luxury; blacked out windows, curtains with uber comfortable spacious seats. We had an hour to kill in Stone Town, which I used to get some cash, post one last postcard and use the internet. The ferry seemed to be less chaotic then the way over though this time no luggage was allowed on, it all went on at the front. I really don’t like the idea of leaving my luggage with a stranger! The sea was rough, rocking the ferry like a toy ... read more

Day 9 - Zanzibar - Stone Town - 7/8/09 Woke up today by the sound of rain drops on the tents. Great! Got up, got dressed and took the tents down in the rain. We were on the truck by 0630, headed for Dar Es Salaam, we were chased all day by a really dark cloud. Eventually after 9 hours of driving we reached Dar. Moses gave us 2 hours to wonder round Dar. I went off with Duncan and Cat; we simply decided to have a beer. We stumbled on The Kilimanjaro hotel so we went inside and had 2 beers. We got back to the truck and got our ferry tickets over to Zanzibar. It was chaos getting on, pushing, pulling, fighting to get on. A typically African affair, I guess you could say! ... read more

Day 4 - Arusha (Tanzania) - 2/8/09 Arrived at Hotel Boulevard for the departure of the tour, which left Nairobi at 0930. We stopped off for some last minute supplies and made our way to the Tanzania border. The roads were awful, shaking us around like rag dolls, up and down, up and down in the truck. On the tour there’s 23 of us picking up a couple of extra people in Zanzibar. Eventually after much staring out of the window we arrived at the Kenyan border. We all got out, filling in our departure record to be stamped out by a really jovial guy who obviously enjoys his job! After visiting the bureau de change, we walked over to the Tanzanian border to be stamped into Tanzania; this process took for ever as some people ... read more
