Geo: 32.05, 118.78It only comes once a year and it's quit big in China.VALENTINE'S DAY.I got flowers. Roses. ( I only think I received flowers because Li was buying some for his wife so I think Luca thought he should buy some too... He assures me that wasn't true...) The Roses are beautiful, but like everything in China everything is over worked. When you buy biscuits. They are wrapped in groups of 6 and then those packs are then packed in groups of 4. Even the toilet paper rolls are individually wrapped and then put in bags of 12 or 24. The lollies are all individually wrapped and then they are wrapped with foil and then wrapped in the outside wrapper...The roses are the same. All of the leaves are stripped from the rose. It's then wrapped ... read more

Geo: 32.05, 118.78It's so cold...My weather app on my phone keeps telling me that it will snow....BUT NO SNOW.Later that night it began to snow. Luca, Serena and Me got all dressed up and out we went....We where like little children trying to collect as much snow so we could throw snow balls at each other.Luca would run off and hide... He would have 8 or 9 snow balls ready in a line to throw them at us..Wow so quick... must be experience. My hands where freezing.Serena and I had to join forces to keep up with Luca.. Serena got her revenge.. She threw a huge snowball right on the side of his face and neck. The snow went into his clothing.... Very coldYou go Girl....The following morning there where icicles on the School Fence. PH ... read more

Geo: 31.23, 121.47The Towers.First was the walk down the Mall which oddly enough is called Nanjing Road. Many, many shops.... but we were looking for the INTER SHOP and yes we found it on the 5th floor of a shopping mall. The boy's bought bits and pieces... (not as good as they thought it might be). Oh well they have to wait for Italy in June- July.At the end of Nanjing Road you see the Pearl Tower a really strange science fiction looking tower that any alien would look at and feel at home. But first we had to cross the River. There is an underground tunnel to get you to the other side.Very cool but not cheap. It reminded me of the scene in the original Willy Wonka movie at the begining when they are taken ... read more

Geo: 31.23, 121.47The one thing we had to do in Shanghai was to visit the Italian Consulate to get the kids European Passports. Then some shopping and of course some sight seeing. The fast train took 1 and a half hours to get to Shanghai. It would have taken 3 and a half if we drove. So Bright and early we went to the Italian Consulate... It really was like being back in Italy.Everyone was dressed very, very well. Hair perfect, nails and make up the same and the smell of Coffee in the air.... AHHH Italy.Ok.... out came all of Gian's paperwork. Originals, translations of originals, photocopies and authenticated photocopies he has them all in a folder. She asked us, "Do you have a copy of the birth certificates?" Matthew was born in Italy so we ... read more

Geo: 32.05, 118.78This place is amazing. During the Chinese New Year all of the shops are closed. This is the only time that most Chinese have holidays. So for the one week over the New Year everything comes to a complete stop. All around us here where we live especially because it is a place full of students they have all gone home so everything is closed. It's like a ghost town.... or should I say ... it feels normal.... but it's not normal for china. Our Driver took us to Purple Mountain to see Dr. Sun's Mausoleum. I thought it was going to be a hard walk up the 369 or steps.... but it was quite easy.Once again we where the only westerners.... but there was another young man and an older couple. The view was great... but ... read more

Geo: 32.05, 118.78Confucian Temple is crazy on a normal day....But during the holiday's of the New Year..... it is crazier...It is really pretty. Red lanters everywhere and people EVERYWHERE...We went with an American Family so there where 8 of us. At one stage there was this little old man who was running alongside us. Maybe there was something happening up ahead that we didn't know about. He had a very nice and big camera. Suddenly he stopped. He jumped out in front of us and started taking photo's. Matthew loved it. He started posing. Then all of a sudden we all stated to pose with the peace sign. The old man loved it. He kept saying Thankyou... Sankyou. Sankyou. A little crazy.... but why not.It really was cold. I mean really, really cold. PHO... read more

Geo: 32.05, 118.78Year of the Dragon. 2012The Chinese are crazy about fire crackers and fire works. We where warned........................"Get out of China if You can for the New Year Festivities."We thought.... "How bad could they possibly be?"WOW.... THEY ARE CRAZY......The more noise the better. Fire crackers..... very noisy but not very pretty.Fire works.... Still very noisy but very, very, very prettyThey were everywhere... The fun started around 5pm.The tradition was to set off fire crackers before dinner. To scare off any bad spirits and it scares the begeebers out of you. Then after dinner another round of fire crackers are lit.....THEN the Pretty ones come out........ They are really easy to buy.....
