Europe » Czech Republic » Prague » Old Town January 2nd 2011

Prague, Praha, prag, praga, the original and true sin city. Anything and everything imaginable is available at your finger tips. The streets are old and beautiful. Every building is an architects delight every corner a spire. Every window an old European look and feel. The streets are paved but more often than not they are cobble stone. Restaurants, shops, bars, and clubs are everywhere and often right next to each other lining the streets. The streets are full of people going in every direction dodging traffic. Every now and then there is a square with a festival and vendors selling mulled wine and food. Then, into the more modern city every block is a Starbucks or a KFC or a McDonalds. So many different nationalities are present the streets are full of cultures in competition for ... read more

Europe » Germany » Baden-Württemberg » Heidelberg December 26th 2010

So, christmas has come and past. I think I slept most of it. For dinner in my hotel room I had a Tombstone pizza and ate pineapple out of the container. The cleaning lady left a small cookie gift bag in my room when she cleaned. It was the only gift I receive this year, but it was worth it. It occured to me that was the price for coming to Germany. I could have stayed in the states longer. I could have had Christmas at home but if I had the army would have canceled my orders and I wouldn't be in Germany at all (maybe ever). So, that's the price I paid. It was totally worth it. We went snow boarding today. We is the 30people thy signed up for the MWR trip and ... read more

Oceania » Fiji » Nadi May 8th 2010

I am in Fiji. Last night was pretty incredible. Blame it on the 3-250ml bottles of NZ wine I had on the plane (I love Air NZ), but I make friends very quickly and easily. As soon as I got off the plane I sat on a bench by the door, waiting for the shuttle to the hostel. A large black woman sitting next to me asked me what was in my travel trunk (I've been dragging around a large plastic "tough box" as my luggage). So, I told her. Clothes, Johnny Walker, etc... She asked how much I wanted for the bottle of Johnny Walker (black label). Having absolutely no idea what the going rate is for JW Black in Fiji, and figuring that I wasn’t going to be able to drink the 2 bottles ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland May 7th 2010

I was considering flying to Queenstown or Christchurch to visit Hammer Springs, but I decided to fly to Fiji instead. I have exactly 4 days left before I have to fly back to work in Bahrain. Why not go out (close the trip out) with a BANG and go somewhere I've never been before. A new country! Also, it's Fiji. It's freaking legendary! The flight was about 700 USD on short notice, but what an experience! When am I ever going to get this chance again? The next time I'm in NZ probably... And, I have no idea when that will be. Next year I hope! It's hard to get out and travel sometimes. Once you are in the States you get locked in, houses, jobs, friends, family, obligations, events, parties, and bills. Not to mention ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Wellington May 3rd 2010

My time is slipping away. I realized I only have a week left. I stayed in Christchurch for a night but I cant say what I did there. I was just passing through really. I've decided that this trip is about seeing things, not doing things. The doing is me driving from place to place seeing. For me, just the experience of being here is enough. All the white water rafting, canoeing, and kayaking can wait until my next trip. I am still considering going bungee jumping though. I drove from Christchurch to Havelock then to Wellington yesterday. I stayed in the BHA hostel in Wellington, not far from the port. I was actually quite pleased. My room has a TV and a sink! And I only have to share a bathroom with one person and ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Greymouth May 1st 2010

I drove from Nelson down to Westport, but I didn’t spend the night there. I wasn’t impressed with Westport. It kind of felt dirty. On the way to Greymouth I discovered the most beautiful secluded beaches. In classic NZ style, I just turned a corner and there they were. They appeared out of no where. The mountains meet the sea. My camera battery died, so I tried to capture the beauty using the webcam on my laptop. I looked funny running around and pointing my computer at things. It's worth mentioning that I found peace and comfort at a YHA hostel that I didnt even stay at. On the way to Greymouth there is a little beach town. Before I reached the town, still in the mountainous hills, there was a YHA. It was hidden and ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Kaikoura April 30th 2010

I had a great time with Janice. We stayed in a nice hostel in Havelock. A beautiful area. Last night I ate a pot of the local, bright-green shell Mussels for dinner and each of us drank about 8 beers. We spent most of yesterday driving down to ‘Kaihkura’ to see the whales. Janice had already booked tickets (she’s good like that) so I just bummed along on her already scheduled trip and purchased tickets/booked rooms where she did. We had a great time! The weather was beautiful and I really appreciated having some company for a few days. Today we part ways. She headed North and I’m continuing my trek South. The rain has been pretty consistent today. I really like all of these little towns along the way. There are always people (quite sociable) ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Wanganui » Wanganui April 28th 2010

Wangnui (they don’t pronounce the 'g') was great. I had a traditional English breakfast in the pub downstairs. I also went back to the coffee shop/ restaurant I had dinner at last night. The beautiful girl I saw passing through was working as a waitress/barista. I had the feeling I could have stayed in that little town for a while. The people were exceptionally nice. Also, I had internet for the first time in a day. No real email, but I did get a chance to chat with my friend... After yesterday's drive, I was anxious to get to Wellington. Oh! I got a speeding ticket! It was kind of exciting actually. The guy cut me a break and only marked me for 18kph over instead of the 38kph over that I was actually driving. What ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island April 28th 2010

Wow. What an amazing thing. I arrived in New Zealand two days ago. I spent the first tow days staying at the 4-star Sky Hotel and Casino. I somehow ended up in the Executive Suite Rm 505. I was not disappointed. But, staying at a hotel like that, while comforting, gave me no sense of freedom or adventure. Today, I rented a car and struck out on my own. Driving on the opposite side of the road, I drove six hours (lost twice) to a small town called "Wanganui" (not how it is pronounced by the locals). At first, I was a little trepidatious. The old guy running the BP gas station was borderline creepy. But, I took a chance and followed his advice into what appears to be a charming old down town district. I ... read more

Middle East » Bahrain » Al Muharraq April 23rd 2010

I love Bahrain. I must admit this. All military thought aside, this is a great country. It has all the makings of a great country. First, the people. The Bahraini people are awesome! So happy! You can tell the Bahraini from the Saudi's just by look. The Bahraini are generally fat and almost always smiling! Bahraini love people. They have hardly ever met someone who wasn’t their friend. When they meet you, or you meet many of them, they shake hands with everyone in the group. The Bahraini love 'Genuine' people, because they are genuine people. It is no wonder they get along well with Westerners. They generally get along well with everyone. Also, they appreciate the finer things in life: good food, good company, and good women. The food. I love the food here. There ... read more
