We knew travelling in Japan would be expensive but didn’t expect that the world finances would crash while we were here. Laurie has been feeling rather bleak; why didn't he buy US dollars when $1US=$0.90AUS?? Jasmine is more of the opinion that the global financial situation is very much out of her control; whereas things such as global poverty and world peace are much more in her portfolio. Meglamania comes in many forms. Before we left Australia the Aussie dollar was worth 103 yen so Laurie thought we could get away with a reasonable lifestyle and enjoy Japan. The trouble with the dollar started when we were in India but it held up well compared to the rupee. So we could afford an occasional luxury stay in good hotels and taxis to take us places. But ... read more

Asia » Japan » Hiroshima October 30th 2008

The other 'must see' around Hiroshima is Miyajima Island and O-torii gate in the water. One of the icons of Japan and a world heritage site (a tick for Jasmine as she wanted to see as many WH sites as possible). It is quite amazing and you could easily spend 6 hours here if you wanted to walk along some of the many nature paths. The Itsukushima Shrine and the Torii gate were built on the water's edge and is surrounded by water at high tide. When we were there, it was low tide and there were workers raking up the algae. We could walk out to the gates and we joined others in trying to throw a rock so that it stayed on the upper level beams. Trickier than it looks: Jasmine did well but ... read more

Laurie: In Hiroshima we are staying at an International Youth Hotel (cause we are still young at heart) which was great as it was on 8th floor with a great view over the city and it had a private bathroom and shower. I hadn’t realised how much I missed that. This is the first place since India that we had a private bathroom. What luxury. It also has broadband internet in the room for free. So we can catch up on blogging and life. Going to the Peace Park and Memorial was deeply disturbing as you might expect. There were thousands of people there everyday. Especially Japanese school students. Most of it I knew but what I wasn’t sure about was whether it was justified. I now believe that it was completely unjustified. 1) it was ... read more

We raced down to Nagoya from Hakodate on a local train and 2 Shinkansen to meet up with Chris and Soren, our friends from the Blue Mountains. They have been here on an exchange with the Blue Mountains' Sister City of Sanda. It was great to share stories and pictures of each of us in Japan. They had some great adventures and had worked hard. They were really ready to go home after 3 weeks. It was interesting to hear about Japanese traditional ways of protecting the environment and to see their photos. I really like the photos of person who made masks from natural forest forage: those who know Chris and Soren we recommend that you go hear their talk on their trip. We enjoyed going up the tallest building in Nagoya: 41 floors on ... read more

The highlight of Hakodate was going up the mountain at night to look at the lights. (We had arrived at night and were leaving the next morning so it was limited as to what to do!) Hakodate is beautiful because it is a peninsula and you can see around the bay on both sides from the mountain. It was a Saturday night and it was packed. Thousands of people were there. Buses and buses loads. We were umming and arring about getting on a packed bus to get down or wait 30 minutes til the next. When we did squeeze on we met up with Sohyon again! We knew she might be around but had not made a plan to meet up. This was Sohyon's 2nd last day in Japan and she was wanting to see ... read more

Toya Shikotsu National park Laurie: Shoko from Supporo drove us to Lake Shikotsu (about a 40 minute drive as she lives on the south side of Supporo) where we had lunch at a beautiful onsen on the shores of the lake. It was just what I was looking for. An onsen based on a natural hot spring with a rotemburo, an outdoor natural rock pool and it looked out over the lake. We spent a good hour there relaxing and preening. We stayed at the youth hostel that night where we had this amazing grilled dinner and we met a Japanese man who is an expert on pufferfish. The next day, Friday, was a disaster (relatively speaking). Pouring with rain so no go with a walk to the local mountain top. We were given the wrong ... read more

When we got to Sapporo we met up with our first Servas family. Servas is an international organisation to build links around the world by hosting travellers from other countries. We found Shoko through the list. She has 2 boys, 12 and 14 and they sounded interesting. We asked if they would host us in Sapporo. I was a bit worried about meeting up with them. I didn't know if we would get on and if the boys would get on. I didn't know how much English they had as Weixiong, Shoko's husband who was away in China had previously done the talking in the arrangements. It worked out fantastically! Shoko's English was great -- and we were able to have good conversations. She is very involved in the organic food movement; through the school and ... read more

Time to start using our JR passes so we zoomed up Honshu Island and over to Hokkaido. Our first experience of the Shikansen. Just amazing. It is essentially flat all the way. Where there are plains they have elevated track to avoid any crossings and where there are mountains there are tunnels. The Japanese must be the biggest burrowers in the world. Nothing gets in the way. So that a journey of 700 km takes just 3 hours. Much better than planes and right to the centre of town. The ordinary express trains are pretty good too. Puts our trains to shame. And of course extremely punctual. The train to Hokkaido goes through the longest under water tunnel in the world (just marginally longer than the English French chunnel). ... read more

I had a bad flu and was not too well in Singapore so we postponed the flight to Tokyo for a couple of days. Then Jasmine was very sick the day after we got to Japan. We took her to a hospital and it turns out she had a gallstone attack. She's never had that before but she is better now but still feeling a bit vulnerable. She has to keep off the fatty food. Laurie looked up the web which said that gall stones are related to female, forty plus, fat and fertile! so kind. Bring on menopause! So we got to see how Japanese hospitals work. Good start to our adventure here, Lucky we have good travel Insurance (provided the company has not gone broke as the stock market melts down). The doctor did ... read more

Life in A traditional Ryokan (Guest House) I am used to taking of shoes in Asian houses but Japan takes it to a whole new level: First you take your shoes off at the front door; then you don green slippers to walk around the ryokan; then you take off your slippers to enter the bedrooms with tatami mat floors; then you don red slippers to enter the toilet; then you don wooden clogs (getas) to go to the restaurant near the front door. You have to be very mindful to make sure you have the right footwear in the right place. But it keeps the place clean and well maintained. Much appreciated after India. The futons a quite comfortable on the floor but I'm not sure about the pillows, basically a beanbag with no bounce ... read more
