The overnight plane trip to KL was dreadful so we arrived feeling tired and worn out. Note to self; avoid overnight plane trips. Note to Malaysian Airways; Why do you serve meals to people who got on a plane at 11.30pm so they can not get any sleep until at least 2am? Anyway we got to the YMCA and were able to sleep till 12ish when we met up with Toni's friend, Susanna and her dad. Susanna was away for Toni's funeral and did not know where her grave is so her dad showed us. We met Daod Toni's brother in law at the grave. So we spent some time in the rain planting some of Toni's plants on it and remembering Toni. We then met up with Toni's sister Mindy who is the spitting image ... read more

Nilgiris - Blue Mountains in India (bordering three states - Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu) We had a brief but wonderful talk with a teacher at a Advasi project -- advasi being word for indigenous people. A plan is hatching, they are in the Nilgiris (means Blue Mountains!!)- it is beautiful territory, tea farming, tigers in the forest and elephants wandering about. A recent fund raising project was a cycle trip from Bangalore to Gudalor. Given that I am now writing this from Japan, the thought of riding a bike in India horrifies me but … who knows, perhaps! The project was started about 30 years ago by Indian couple who acted on their social conscience, and taught in this area. There are government schools but poorly funded. The project leaders were trying to make sure ... read more

The Western Ghats, the mountains ranges in Kerala and Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in south India are famous for their tea (and recently also for the amount of pesticide that contaminates the ground water). However we were introduced to 'special tea' by Derek and Chaim in the Anchor Hotel overlooking the water at Cochi (not that hard, lots of islands, lots of water). It was a dry day to celebrate the life of a person dedicated to social justice but .... even though I was after a coffee, the beer in a tea pot tasted great. Derek "I don't mind if I interject now" is a writer, here to finish his book. Two months ago he broke his shoulder and collar cuff (my shoulder cries out in sympathy) and that, plus the special tea, we think ... read more

Laurie: We wanted to catch the train to Kochi but when I tried to get tickets there was none. I thought I knew the way around the Indian Train system but I was wrong. So we got the Semi -Sleeper Overnight bus which went on the same road as to Bandipur. So I was a bit worried but it was a Volvo bus with wonderful suspension. So we survived OK. Laurie went for an early morning walk and amazingly was not hassled once. Nobody trying to sell sandalwood boxes or fans. Nobody wanting to be my “friend”. It was Sunday morning maybe they were still asleep. Let’s see what Fort Cochin the main tourist area is like. ... read more

Jaden really wanted to have an elephant ride and we wanted to see some wildlife. So we followed the guidebooks that said Bandipur National Park. Fiona Mark, Jaden and Kym went in the taxi and Jasmine and Laurie braved the local bus. Well that was an experience. What an old rattler with no suspension on the worst road we have come across in India. In spots the tarmac was a thin strip down the middle of enormous potholes. Lucky I had brought an extra pillow which I sat on to cushion the bumps. It still caused havoc with my neck. We booked a forest dept bungalow as it was a reasonable price. All the commercial resorts are over $US100 per person per night. We knew they would be simple but didn’t think they would be so ... read more

Laurie: Our first day in Mysore Laurie and Kym took a rickshaw into town to try and find some tourist information and an internet café. The rickshaw driver just wanted to take us to the Maharajah’s Palace and then harassed us to use him all day to go to sandalwood factory and Silk shops. He wouldn’t stop. So we just kept walking with him following us until he gave up. Then another guy follows us and starts chatting and wants to be my “friend” and take me around to see sandalwood factory etc. Eventually he got bored too and gave up. Then another “friend” turns up and eventually find out he wants to sell me dope. Jasmine: The hassle factor in India does make travelling a challenge on some days. It can make you strong or ... read more

LAURIE Driving from Auroville to Mysore was pretty amazing. Well we weren't driving. We took a taxi with a driver who was pretty good. Driving is not for the faint hearted. You can't be polite you just push a head and slip through the gaps. Honking your horn all the way. It was beautiful going from the coastal plains up to the Deccan Plateau through granite hill country. We even had very short stretches where there wasn't a village or a person to be seen. We stopped at Tiruvanamalai to look at the Hindu temple there but Kym and I were not impressed. Overly ornate. I was more impressed with the fort at Gingee but we didn't stop. Going through Bangalore was amazing. First signs of the Booming India with massive highway flyovers and big glass ... read more

LAURIE Our last day in Pitchandikulim. It's almost cool or we may be getting used to the heat. We went yesterday to Puducherry. Saw the temple elephant (poor thing shackled most of the time in a garage size room.) Bought some lovely Indian sweets and books to keep us amused on our travels. This week we saw more of PRBC work in Chennai and on the coast. The have got some money from Union Bank Swiss to work with a fishing village affected by the tsunami. The village wasn't actually damaged by the wave but the tsunami of aid has built new houses in a different area and given fishing boats to people who don't know how to use them. PRBC is doing the same kind of work here, helping develop women's groups and doing environmental ... read more

LAURIE We realised that the heat was causing us and particularly Kym to be a bit dehydrated even though we were drinking lots of water. So Kym was very impressed when Margaret who lives in Cambodia said Coke was very good for oral rehydation in tropical area. It has lots of minerals and sugars. So Kym is very happy to insist every day to have his medicinal Coke, a whole 2 litres of it. Pitchandikulim is part of Auroville. Now Auroville is a strange place. Established by The Mother, a devotee of Sri Aurobinda in 1968, "Auroville wants to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities. The purpose of Auroville is to realise human unity" ... read more

LAURIE I'm sitting here in the Ecodorm in the Pitchandikulim Bio Resource Centre. (PBRC). It's a bit cooler today only about 30C. It was such a lurch from winter in the mountains to the pre monsoon heat of India. We've been here about a week and it's been exhausting. Just starting to have energy again. There's a lovely view from our room into the Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest. Pitchandikulim is an environment education centre which focusses on reafforesting in the local area with this local indigenous forest. But they are doing so much more as we've discovered. They are also helping a group of local villages to develop sustainably. They have built an environment education centre and toilets at the local high school and a number of women's centres. They have helped replant a community forest ... read more
