Geo: 37.1765, -3.59793Seeing RedDAY ELEVENThursday, October 6, 2016Today was the highlight of our sightseeing-laden Tauck itinerary in Spain. We visited The Alhambra (Al-HOM-bra), famed Moorish palace constructed in the 13th century to be "paradise on Earth". The Palace and grounds are breathtaking. I can't imagine the Taj Mahal being more impressive. The translation of Alhambra literally is "the red one", constructed from clay. Only the Generalife, the Sultans summer palace, is white. The Alhambra was originally constructed as a fortress in AD 889 on the remains of Roman fortifications, and rebuilt in the mid-13th century by a Moorish emir. It was converted into a royal palace in 1333 by Yusuf I, Sultan of Granada. After the Christian Reconquista in 1492, the site became the Royal Court of Ferdinand and Isabell... read more

Geo: 37.1765, -3.59793Help Me, RondaDAY TENWednesday, October 5, 2016We were sorry to learn this morning that we have had one couple on our trip return home. John and Carol Diehl from St. Louis flew back to the US this morning. There has been a virus moving around the coach; perhaps a third of the people have been taken ill, each for a period of 24 hours. But I'm told John was running a fever and feeling quite ill. Sorry for them and sorry for us. They were a welcome addition. From Marbella, we headed to the cliff-top city of Ronda, population 40,000. Our guide was Pepe, head of the tour group Tauck uses in Ronda; in fact, he wrote a guidebook on visiting the area. Set high on a plateau divided by the Tajo Gorge, Ronda offers ... read more

Geo: 36.5099, -4.88635Down time and downtownDAY NINETuesday, October 4, 2016Today is a day of leisure and relaxation. Nothing on the agenda from Tauck and only breakfast included. Friends who know me well know I don't do relaxation well. I am an obsessive compulsive doer so this isn't my best day on the tour. But my traveling companions are delighted, included my roommate.I have been getting very little sleep, averaging 4-5 hours between traveling all day and blogging and editing photos at night. I rarely go to bed before 2 am. Which was true again last night but this morning I didn't have to set an alarm. Patrick woke me up at 9:40 so I guess I needed to catch up on the Z's.I thought I had a manicure at 10 am, according to our tour guide. ... read more

Geo: 36.5099, -4.88635Monkeying AroundDAY EIGHTMonday, October 3, 2016From Seville we headed south to Jerez de la Frontera, Spain's horse and sherry country. We toured the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, located on the grounds of a 19th-century mansion designed by the architect of the Paris Opera, Garnier. First up on the tour were some carriages and coaches (can you imagine? two coach museum tours in one itinerary?) and then a visit with some of the famous Andalusian horses. Several have medaled in dressage at the Olympics. They are exquisite. Mostly we saw them being groomed, and others being trained. We saw academy students taking lessons in the arena. On the same site, we were given a tour of the House of Sandeman, one of the places producing Spain's famous sherry. Following the tour, they offered a ... read more

Geo: 37.3833, -5.9965The SpaniardsDAY SEVENSunday, October 2, 2016Seville has stolen my heart. It's charming, romantic and gorgeous. There is so much to see and it's all lovely. We began the day with a group photo of the Tauck tour participants on the steps of the hotel. And we followed that with a walking tour of the formerly walled city. We headed to Real Alcázar of Seville, the royal palace created by Moorish Muslim kings. The upper levels are still used by the royal family as the official Seville residence. Another UNESCO World Heritage Site. The gardens are extensive – the walled-in area belies its size from the outside. When we left the gates of the palace, we wandered through a maze of lanes that you could easily get lost in. We stopped in the Jardines de Murillo and ... read more

Geo: 37.3833, -5.9965Moving DayDAY SIXSaturday, October 1, 2016Like the pro golfers, Saturday was moving day for us. For those who aren't golfers, it means if you are going to make your move, Saturday is the day to do it … before you run out of time. In the good old days, when Tiger was Tiger, he might have been way back in the pack and have an incredible Saturday to put himself back in the thick of things. It was like that for us today. We made our move into Spain. We are ready for the big time.We had breakfast in the dining room in Evora but when we met up with our moving team, one of them was down for the count: Annie. She had been up all night sick and she was faint over breakfast. ... read more

Geo: 38.571, -7.9096SkullduggeryDAY FIVEFriday, September 30, 2016After breakfast at the Ritz, we boarded our pretty "circus" bus and headed out of Lisbon, passing a few more famous sites, including the prison, the train station and some fascinating high rises along the water (Tagus River). We crossed over the Vasco da Gama Bridge, one of Europe's longest suspension bridges, and headed to Evora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Evora has 2,000 years of history.NOTE: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity. First stop, the rather creepy Chapel of Bones in the 15th-century church of St. Francis. The chapel is decorated with thousands of skulls and... read more

Geo: 38.7072, -9.13552MagpiesDAY FOURThursday, September 29, 2016 Many things to see; many things seen.Following breakfast at the Ritz, we boarded our coach for a half-hour transfer to Sintra, a resort town in the Sintra Mountains. The Moorish- and Manueline-style Sintra National Palace is distinguished by dramatic twin chimneys and elaborate tilework. Sintra is known for its 19th-century Romantic architectural monuments, which has resulted in its classification as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.Like most, this castle has a lot of history. There are tales of religion, war, love, kings and queens and bears, oh my.One of my favorites is the Magpie Room, a tale that looms larger than life. It seems the king had a dalliance with a cute young thing, and when the queen caught him in flagrante, he denied everything and never discussed it again. ... read more

Geo: 38.7167, -9.13333Portugal Is a MosaicDAY THREEWednesday, September 28, 2016We began the day with a breakfast buffet in the Ritz dining room. The food was QUITE good and the room was simply beautiful, with elaborate fresh flowers. The Portuguese answer to French toast was very tasty, as were some of the more exotic offerings. Our band of four (Barcy, Anne, Patrick and I) decided on a morning visit to Lisbon's National Tile Museum, Museu Nacional do Azulejo, a 15-minute cab ride from the Ritz. Senior admission was a bargain -- just 2.5 Euros. Thanks to high school classmate Boo Blake Kula for suggesting it.This delightful museum includes five centuries of decorative ceramic tiles or azulejos. Its collection is the only one of its kind in the world. It is located in the monastic buildings of the Madre ... read more

Geo: 38.7072, -9.13552The worst kind of high maintenanceDAY TWOTuesday, September 27, 2016 We connected to Lisbon via Iberia airlines (a One World partner of American Airlines) and were met by a Tauck rep. A van transferred us downtown to the Four Seasons Ritz Lisboa -- passing by the city's soccer stadium, the University, the aqueduct -- to a lovely room on the 5th floor, with a veranda overlooking the city and the distant harbor. We did a little recuperating and met up with Anne at 5 pm for a short walk around the area. We headed to a mall to buy additional adaptors as we brought along a suitcase full of electronic items … we (I use that term loosely) have two iPhones, two iPads, an iPod, camera battery recharger, laptop, electronic curlers and curling iron … ... read more
