Geo: 40.4167, -3.70327Iberia! Monday, September 26, 2016DAY ONEPatrick and I headed to Madrid today, with our ultimate destination being Lisbon. We were meeting up with trip buddies Barcy Fox, formerly of St. Louis and many other places, including Memphis and Boston, and currently of Santa Fe. Anne Leverone, our other companion, is formerly of Cincinnati and St. Louis, currently of Douglas, MI and St. Paul, MN (believe it or not, she actually winters in St. Paul but I don't need to go there). I just have this to say: we have been friends since college and I've never visited her Minnesota home. Why visit her for the Winter Ice Festival when she has a lovely home right near Saugatuck on Lake Michigan? The four of us travel well together ... Alaska ... Africa ... Geo: 40.7528, -73.9853DAY FIVERiver Café, BrooklynOur plans were altered dramatically on Sunday morning. The bombing the night before and the discovery of additional bombs throughout the area, closed bridges, roads and subway stations so we were concerned about logistics and timing. Our original plan: Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral with Cardinal Dolan (formerly of St. Louis) at 10:15, brunch at River Café in Brooklyn at 11:30, return to the condo by 3 to retrieve luggage and use Uber to get to Laguardia. Our revised plan: Mass at nearby St. Malachy (see photo from Day One) at 9 am, return to condo and transfer ourselves and our bags by Uber to the River Café, then take Uber directly to the airport. The revised plan worked without a minute to spare. It turns out that because of the bombing, TSA ... read more

Geo: 40.7528, -73.9853DAY FOUR"Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story"9/11 Memorial/MuseumUPDATE: I think I jumped the gun using "Blow Us All Away" for yesterday's headline. Tonight there was a bombing in New York's Chelsea district, near Little Italy, not far from Subway Line “R” which we took north early evening. The explosion went off about 8:30; 29 people were injured. Several other “pressure cooker” bombs were found in the area. Thanks for all who inquired as to our safety. We are just fine. Perhaps because we are safe and sound, it didn't seem like that big a deal. We're tourists you know. The New Yorkers seem on edge. 9/11 MemorialThis morning we took the subway downtown to the 9/11 Museum/Memorial. We looked like a bunch of rubes trying to figure out our subway path... read more

Geo: 40.7528, -73.9853DAY THREEBLOW US ALL AWAY!!UPDATE: Our tickets to “Hamilton” proved authentic and we got to see the show tonight! Awesome! Wow! It blew us all away. More later. Our day began early again, as we were heading to the plaza of The TODAY Show. We had elaborate plans: small NYC skyline snow globes which Gary Wurdack carefully attached to wide headbands. And we had a gold star-shaped poster sign that read: “The TODAY Show outshines even HAMILTON.” We were convinced we would make it on the show. We did not. When we arrived at 6:15, we were very far back in the line. We waited a long time, cleared security and found we were not in the primary television viewing area. Our choices were: 1). Stay where we were, where we all could lean on a ... read more

Geo: 40.7528, -73.9853DAY TWOThursday, September 15, 2016We are pushing ourselves to the limit. I love that about us. We arose at 5:30 to dress, walk to the subway stop and ride uptown to the Live with Kelly show at ABC Studios in Lincoln Center. Our first experience was a little off-putting. We headed down the subway stairs to find a presumably homeless man sleeping at the base of the stairs. When he saw the six of us dressed up to be in Kelly's live audience, he yelled, "It's the Golden Girls!" He called us by name … Dorothy, Sophia, Blanche, Rose, etc. We tried to ignore him and headed quickly to the machine which would issue us our subway tickets. But clearly we didn't know what we were doing. The Golden Girls narrator took pity on us, ... read more

Geo: 40.7528, -73.9853Monday, September 12, 2016Hamilton ticket update:I guess my friend Ken Abendschein and my sister Debby Fleming Wurdack were right. (Man, I hate admitting that.) But I came oh so close to killing myself (or someone else) when StubHub called Monday to say our tickets to "HAMILTON" had been rescinded by the seller! WTF??!?!?!The seller was offering us substitute tickets on three other dates. Only one date is while we are in NYC. I agreed to the substitution for this Friday, Sept. 16 -- what else could I do? The other choice was a complete refund of our money. Yikes?!?I had four different telephone exchanges and one internet chat. Seven hours later the issue is resolved. I have 6 printed tickets for Friday and no lives were lost. NO BAIL MONEY NEEDED.I am NOT throwing ... read more

Geo: 38.5776, -90.4245My sister (Debby Fleming Wurdack), four other friends (Siobhan Brace, Kathy Leach, Kathryn Snodgrass, Nancy Pautler) and I are headed next week to New York City for a girls' weekend to celebrate Kathy's 60th birthday. We have tickets to "Hamilton: An American Musical" -- winner of the 2016 Tony Award for best musical. I am beyond excited.Ever since we purchased tickets for the musical last January, I have become obsessed. I read the biography by Ron Chernow. I read creator Lin-Manuel Miranda's "Hamilton, a Revolution." I have purchased two Hamilton tee shirts. I own the soundtrack and have listened to it endlessly. I have delved into YouTube and watched 100's of clips ... interviews, show footage, other groups' covers of the most melodic songs (Musicality being my favorite group). Don't miss Charlie Rose's many ... read more

Geo: 38.6276, -90.199Day 11 It was 55° when we departed Liscombe, Nova Scotia this morning. Still raining. Full rain regalia was in order. Allison said this was a typical day for her in Newfoundland in spring and fall. We didn't visit Newfoundland, although it's one of the Atlantic Provinces. So she showed us a video called "Canada over the Edge" about her home Province. The island contains the eastern most point of North America (exception for the Aleutian Islands in Alaska). “Next stop as you head east: Ireland.” It's also where Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless transmission.Allison handed out a list of our emails, which we all submitted voluntarily yesterday so we can stay in touch. I will send everyone our group photo from the covered bridge in New Brunswick.Speaking of group photos, Allison handed ... read more

Geo: 45.013, -62.0983Day 10Our weather good luck charm gave out this morning. It was rainy and foggy. The first several hours of our bus ride, we could see very little. Allison said she has had entire tours do the Cabot Trail (our day yesterday) where she would have to say, "If there weren't fog here, you would be seeing a magnificent view of the water." Luckily for us, our scheduled sights today were not those of Mother Nature. Our first stop was The Gaelic College in St. Ann's. It is a Scottish Gaelic school that operates just in summer. Kilt making. Bag piping. Step dancing. And many other classes designed to help revitalize the Cape Breton culture. The culture is especially strong here because of the island's isolation. For decades, there wasn't even a bridge to the ... read more

Geo: 46.6921, -60.3673Day 9 – Happy TrailsThe Cabot TrailWe headed out from the hotel for a day-long adventure along the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton. Lonely Planet declares it one of the prettiest drives in North America. We headed north along the eastern seaboard. Our first stop was an overlook called Green Cove. Weather: sunny, warm, windy. It looked very much like coastal Maine. We traveled north and northwest to the highest peaks on North Mountain (Highlands). Allison said if we were going to see moose, it would be there. Unfortunately, not there. We then headed southwest to Lone Shieling, a replica of a Scottish hut, made of stone and thatch. Nearby, we took a short hike among the many sugar maples. Unfortunately, the colors haven't changed. And we experienced a high of 86° F today. Yikes! Tomorrow is ... read more
