North Korea ok it's way over time, but finally we've got some time and the facilities to do some bla-bla about North-Korea. (in the mean time we've been to Shanghai, Benxi and currently were at the 'base' of the yellow mountains, where we'll go tomorrow). So on the 24th of October we've took the plane to Pyongyong. But basically already on the 23rd espcially I got rather excited as we had a 2 hour briefing about North-Korea from the English tour-operator who had fixed this trip for us. Let's get some things straightened out immediately: 2 guides and 1 driver excorted us 24/7. we weren't able to buy stuff from locals. They bought for us. Only are certain designated 'shops' we could buy stuff, but only with Euro, Chinese RBM or USD. At one shop we ... read more

Hi Dear Friends, sorry for the big silence, we haven't posted any entries for long... partially because of the trip to North Korea, but let us start with Beijing first! After the harsh weather in Mongolia we really longed for the high 10s or low 20s C in Beijing, which thankfully awaited for us there. OK, no fliplops weather, but we could get rid of the long john's, gloves, caps and fleece jackets... big difference. Spent 6 days in Beijing, and enjoyed it a lot. It's a buzzing city with noise, traffic and lots of smells, so different to the Mongolian steppe :-) We took it easy in Beijing, but managed to do the main highlights, being Summer Palace, Forbidden City, Tianmen Square, Great Wall, Acrobatics, Peking Duck, etc... Great architecture and thanks God the tourist ... read more

Mongolia - Ger to Ger trip Hi Friends, already in Beijing, but now we have time to give you some more details on Mongolia. We spent there 1 week which was way too short... but as there are trains only 3 times a week from UB to Beijing, and we have an appointment in Beijing on 23 Oct, we had to leave. We spent the one week in the Mongolian countryside in an organised tour where more or less the two of us were the group :o) We left UB by bus to somewhere in the West where a nice local non-English speaking coordinator picked us up and put us in a car, so the driver could take us to the first family with whom we stayed the first 2 nights. We had our own ... read more

Mongolia Ok we just came back from the Mongolian countryside where weve traveled 6 days from Ger to Ger (round tent which the local nomads still use as houses) with camels and horses. All pretty cool, but it depends heavily on the saddles... Authentic Mongolian saddles (read: 100% wood, no cushion) are NOT recommended. But the whole experience was great. Horserinding through the plains in the snow. Catching some sun and throwing goat shit at eachother with the local kids (no they were not chasing us away, we were just having fun). But I gues that the weirdest thing was actually when we went with camels to a local holy place on Sunday, where we were spontanously invited to join a Mongolian Sunday lunch: sheep. All ok, but at the moment we arrive they were just ... read more

Hello again, now from Beijing. Apparently this site is not blocked, but facebook is.... But ok, this posting should have been done in Ulaanbaatar (UB) - Mongolia, but this didn't happen due to a lack of time. So this posting is just a copy-paste from a e-mail draft that lingered in Agi's mail box for ~2 weeks.... Enjoy. Ulaan Ude - Ulaanbaatar After 13 hours on the bus we arrived to UB yesterday at local time 7.30 pm. The trip was OK except for the border crossing which took 3.5 hours. I love the European Union, just so easy. Here the procedure is the following: at Russian border exit customs guy enters the bus and checks all passports for Russian visas. After this the bus pulls to the customs building where everybody has to leave the ... read more

Baikal Lake Area Hi Dear Friends! Sorry for not writing so long, it's not because we have forgotten about you. Since our last entry we crossed from Europe to Asia and after our adventureous trip on the Trans Siberian we arrived to Irkutsk on 1 October. 4 nights, 3 days on the train sounds horrible, but actually was not that bad... we shared our cabin with 2 Russian guys, both on a 7 day trip to Vladivostok... ouch... one of them was a military pilot. We asked him why he did not fly on this long trip, he said he does not trust the Russian commercial airlines... maybe he likes to be in control??? We had some funny chats with him and his friend, he understood approx 20 % of what we said in English, ... read more

Okay, a quick picture up-date. By now we've figured out how to add pictures and also a computer that allows us to edit pictures. So this is a quick picture up-date #1, probably (read: hopefully) number 2 will follow tomorrow... For now just 8 quick snapshots: Blankenberge (BE) Dusseldorf (DE) Saint-Peterburg & Moscow (RU). Adios from Mongolia, so we've still got some catching up to do... C&A ... read more

As promised, this time we write a decent blog entry... SPB Saintpetersburg (SPB) was great, we spent there 3 days. Lucky us the youth hostel was in the centre, so all sights were in walking distance. SPB is the favourite city for many Russians as it's a buzzing place with lots of nice buildings and people are very friendly. The only negative they say about SPB is the weather, it can be very very cold and dark, a bit depressive sometimes. We were lucky though, the sun was shining, blue sky and not much wind. We visited the Hermitage, which is a museum much bigger than the Louvre in Paris. Amazing collection however we liked the building itself most. Full with ornaments, lots of gold on the ceilings and walls, all rooms reflect the richness Russia ... read more
