Semporna - the gateway to great dives! Ok, Semporna, how can we describe it: Lush palm trees covering a boulevard, some sunny beaches (good for snorkeling), some eating places and couple of dive shops. So we arrive there with good hopes. But alas, reality is not the way as we just described it. The description was the imagination we had before arriving. Reality is a bit different: no palm trees, garbage floating in the water. Haven't seen a beach for miles and there are no dive shops.... Instead a small market under a concrete cover, some lego-style blocks of buildings and some dive operators who REALLY suggest you to go to a resort island: Not our budget. So we're at a rat invested floating resort right next to Semporna's shore where the showers are not ... read more

Here we are, we arrived to Thailand, back to civilisation and western world. But the arrival was a bit more tricky than expected. Immigration headache You would think that Thailand is a hassle free country to travel to, you can get in visa-free or get your visa on arrival. This was in our mind when heading towards immigration at Bangkok airport. Yes, we knew that the immigration rules got stricter 2 weeks ago, as the financial/travel crisis is over, so Thailand restored its immigration rules that were in place pre-crisis... Being an Eastern European proved to be a disadvantage this time. While citizens of most Western countries still get in visa-free, we, last joiners of the EU got pushed back to the non-exempted list. All right, applying for a visa on arrival does not sound a ... read more

Asia » Burma » Mandalay Region » Bagan March 17th 2010

Dear Friends, Although we are in Thailand already, we still owe you with our final entry on Myanmar. So here you go! Wonderland After our lengthy budget cruise we got back safe to Mandalay. There we only spent one day this time, which passed in lazyness but socially. We met 2 fellow travellers in the guesthouse, Marcel from Germany and Tim from Australia. Both nice guys, Tim is on the way to become a Buddhist monk so we had interesting discussions about religion, spirituality and the likes. Next day Marcel joined us on the bus to Bagan, which is "the tourist destination" in Myanmar. You would think that the road between Mandalay and Bagan is pretty OK, knowing the big flow of tourists and locals on this stretch every day, but no. The worst ride in ... read more

Ok, we're now more than a week further and basically all we did was visiting an English school in Mandalay and cruising to Bhamo Myanmar style... Guess this latter was a trimmed down or budget version of a similar trip we might do later when pensioners on the Mediterranean... Let's Enjoy English! On our cycling around in Mandalay we got lost at a point one day while looking for the teak monastery, but a nice local guy helped us out. Actually he offered to guide us there. Very kind we thought so we went off. On the way we stopped at his home, he offered some cold drinks (goood!!) and he told us that he runs a private English school in the evenings for the kids in the neighbourhood. This is a really great thing as ... read more

Asia » Burma » Yangon Region » Yangon March 3rd 2010

Myanmar (aka Burma) is weird. Coming from Kolkata, India we flew via Bangkok to Yangon. Our plan is to stay here approx one month, but we'll see. Touristy Weirdo Country Myanmar was also on our list of "weirdo" countries to visit, but apparently this is a rather touristy one: all facilities are here, tourist all around, no strange, abnormal military nor police presence on the streets, you can talk and walk freely here. People are very friendly and at night, you can walk safely home. So in itself it appears to be the perfect tourist place, cause there is loads to see and perfect weather. But it's a military dictatorship, which is not that friendly to its inhabitants. It just gets a bit weirder and weirder once to start probing around: *The human rights situation is ... read more

Dear Friends, This is our final entry about India as tomorrow we fly to Myanmar. Baby buttocks? We are in Kolkata now, and the last few days were pretty adventurous. We left Varanasi towards Daltonganj in good faith, expecting to arrive around 9 pm by train. However, a delay occured to our train schedule (as always), and honestly in the darkness we had no clue anymore which station is Daltonganj due to the poor station indications and the fact that we could be there sometime between 1 am and 3 am. We have to add that Jharkhand district of India is infamous due to some security issues, so the conservative selves told us to stay in the train and see what happens in the morning. When we woke up next day our travel companions were surprised ... read more

Greetings All, OK we're in India, so we had to do our tickmark list there. Agnes was totally focused to go to Agra. So from Delhi we took the train to Agra: non-reserved 'seats'. Seats is between brackets as we were actually lucky (or rude enough) to get some places on what we would call in Europe the luggage racks above the actual seats. However this being India, these spots are indeed intended to be seats as they are spacious enough to sit up straight on top of them. The only thing missing on these racks was a place to put your sandals. So these had to be stached on top of the ceiling ventilators: happy travels!!!! We actually didn't see a conductor there, but then again that would practically have been suicide. As in the ... read more

TATA, WE SALUTE YOU! Hail Tata, ohh omnipresent Indian force. Having acquinted to you in far and humble Luxembourg, where your tentacles of power and force could be felt. Being here in Tata motherland decided for me that a proper salutation to your might empire is only justified, if not the only logical and dignified tribute a humble traveler like me could do.... This is my tribute, this is my humble salutation to: Tata Group, India's largest business group and multinational company. After some limited traveling around in India my little eye spied more and more of the Tata force. Therefore I decided to take pictures where and when I could, just to show what's possible and what it had. As our camera was stolen, I couldn't upload my latest treasures which were picked up on ... read more

Time for a break, time for flip-flops.... Ok, this is our private 10 day holiday. We were on the road for more that 4 months and our last decent holiday was in Nov 2008, time for a break, time for flip-flops.... Knowing that our India trip would be shorter as planned (no six months visa and only a single entry), we decided to do it properly and fly to Varkala and bbasically do nothing. It was harrd work, but we succeeded. We managed to undergo a 7 day massage treatment, with the beach 2 minutes from our place: pretty nice. The food in our favorite place (Johnney's Cool Cafe) was a struggle everytime we got there: all 100% fresh (the cutting of the veggies or prepareing of the curries happened only once an order for it ... read more

India is Great... So after our too short stay in Paki, we're settling down in India. We think it will be approx for one month, as our Myanmar (a.k.a. Burma) visa will expire the beginning of March. So India wil become a bit of a rush job, that's the way things are going apparently. And we should not forget that instead of long stay in India, we got Tibet, Nepal and Pakistan, not a bad deal... So after crossing the land border with Pakistan in Attari, we crossed one of the lamest border checks ever: "Do you have illegal substances, like drugs on you?" No "Ok, that's ok, you can go on" and that was our Paki/Indian customs experience. Knowing that Paki and India are officially not that close to each other it kinda surprised us. ... read more
