We arrived in Puerto Iguazú after a 6 hour coach trip from Paraty to Sao Paulo then another 16 hours from Sao Paulo to Foz do Iguaçu... and yes we were tired! A short bus ride through border control and we were there! We had orginally planned to stay in Foz first then travel over but accommodation etc is so much cheaper on the Argentian side that a quick decision was made. After a bit of coming and going we found a hostel which was ok and so cheap in comparison to what we were used to in Brazil.. and bigger rooms too. The shock to us on arriving here was how cold it was. We had been used to t-shirts and shorts but fleeces, boots and trousers were definately needed here.. we are just hoping ... read more

When we arrived in Paraty we had only planned to be here for 2 nights but this quickly turned into 3 the minute we stepped off the bus! Partay is about 2 hours west of Ilha Grande and easily reached on the local buses. It´s the most fantastic town which consists of classical 18th century Portugese colonial buildings in the historic centre where our hostel was found. This part of the town has no vehicle access and the roads made up of huge cobbles which are actually quite difficult to walk on.. god knows how people bike across them as they must have really sore bums by the end of the day! You also see the odd horse & kart going by every now and again which adds to the charm. The historic town has loads ... read more

The journey to Ilha Grande went without a hitch despite being a few minutes late for the bus from Rio.. it´s a good job the South Americans run behind schedule! A 2 hour bus ride and 1.5 hour boat ride and we were in Dale´s idea of heaven. Ilha Grande is a 193km2 island off the coast of Rio. There are no cars so you have to get to the 170 beaches by boat or via one of the many trekking trails. It really is a fantastic place and in complete contrast to the crowds in Rio. Our hostel Aqua Rio was a 20 minute walk along the beach at the end of the main town. We were shown to our room ´The Captains Suite´and were greeted by fantastic views of the bay and mountains behind. ... read more

We landed in Rio 10 minutes ahead of schedule after enjoying a flight with extra leg room because we had the 'front row seats'. This was great for us as it meant we could get some sleep but you had to feel sorry for the 7' guy behind us! After a 1.5 hours stop at Sao Paulo sat on the plane we were off again and landed in Rio at 7.50am on Monday 2nd June. Rio is not at all as we had expected, you read so many horror stories about how you will get mugged or stabbed if you even step outside. In reality it's very relaxed and not at all intimidating, a bit like London really, you don't go walking around with your bag open but so far all has been fine and we ... read more

Not long to go now and we are busy packing up the house.. when we say busy what we actually mean is that Sophie has made a half hearted attempt to put the CD's in a box and has decided that everything else can wait until the day we move because 'she doesn't want to live in an empty house'. We have 2 weeks before we leave the house, the rucksacks are nearly packed full now with just a few final bits like toiletries and malaria tablets to get. We have test packed both packs and are surprised that they are so full.. we really did think there might be a bit of room to spare since we went for quite big packs but no.. lets hope that we manage to downsize as we go along ... read more
