I am writing this from in my weekly rental room in Colorado Springs, Colorado. My room is more like a suite without having the bedroom separate from the living room and is quite comfortable and functional. I have just completed an 1800 mile trip from College Station, Texas to Colorado Springs via the scenic route. What should have been a 900 mile trip by the most direct route has been 1800 miles by avoiding interstates and going the scenic route via regular roads and highways and quite a bit through mountains and canyon roads. The only Interstate I drove was the short stretch between Socorro and Santa Fe, New Mexico on I-25. It has been quite a breathtaking and somewhat arduous journey but well worth it. Anyone who visits America via the Interstate highway system cannot ... read more

August 27 – I stayed at a very nice Free campsite right on the banks of the Rio Grande between Creede and Lake City last night. It was on FR 529 off of Hwy 149 and about 9 miles west of Creede. A deluge came up late at night and I was afraid the river would flash flood so I moved further up the hill and went back to sleep. This morning I drove back into Creede for another excellent coffee and breakfast burrito at a café called Fardog. It is only open from 7:30 till 11:30. They have good breakfast burritos and excellent coffee. Everyone seems to be getting ready to leave. The restaurant I ate at is closing for the season after Labor Day. Everyone is talking about where they are headed. While I ... read more

Taos to Creede, Colorado - August 24 - I have pretty much seen everything else in Taos the last few times I have been through, so after touring Taos Pueblo and making sure my reservoir and radiator were ok, I went back through Taos and out on Hwy 68 (The Low Road) to Espanola. From the coolness of the mountains I was back in the heat of the desert country again. I headed north on Hwy 84 towards Pagosa Springs Colorado. As I went north the elevation increased again till it was cool again. I enjoyed the scenery, especially while driving through the “Red Rocks” area around the Ghost Ranch and Echo Amphitheater. I stopped at some turnouts along the way to savor the view and enjoyed the drive till I got to Chama at 7800ft ... read more

August 24 – Sunday – Morning - This morning after having my banana and peanut butter sandwiches for breakfast I made sure the reservoir for my radiator was full as well as the radiator full, and headed off over the top of the mesa. I had no problem getting up and over the mesa and then back down again, on Hwy567 to where it veered off towards Carson. At this point I continued on straight to where the road connected with Hwy 64 near the rest area at the Rio Grande Gorge bridge. I invested an hour of so checking out the canyon from the Rest Area and the overlook in the middle of the bridge. Quite awesome. Note: From my campground I could have just went back on 570 to Pilar and then taken Hwy ... read more

August 22 – Friday – When I arrived a Ft. Stanton I had driven 764.4 miles so far on this trip. Of that 600 miles of it was just getting out of Texas from College Station. But now the shooting the gap portion of my trip was over and the enjoying portion could begin. Last night I stayed in the BLM equestrian trailhead campground at Ft Stanton free. It is at 6300 feet elevation and was cool enough for me to shut my windows and use a blanket. It also rained last night and some this morning. It felt great this morning when I headed out westward on Hwy 380 from Ft Stanton to I 25. It was quite a scenic drive as well. I had visited Lincoln again yesterday. Lincoln was the central location of ... read more

August 17 – Sunday – I had planned on leaving on my trip up through the Rockies from New Mexico to Canada much earlier this summer. However with delays on getting my finances back into shape after some expensive hospital, doctor, radiology, and lab bills I have been delayed a bit. Also quite frankly when living a life of comfort and ease and surrounded by those you love and who love you it isn’t that easy to up and take off into the uncertainties and discomforts of traveling. But I guess bottom line is a man needs a little adventure in his life, otherwise he is just waiting to die, something I have no real interest in doing, either now or later. One of the delays on this trip was on about the 1st of August ... read more

I am writing this blog mainly to round out this “trip”. I know it is strictly not a travel blog but in view of my other 400 blogs or so my “series” would be incomplete without entering this experience. It may even be tedious to some but I hope my past 3 blogs and this one are informative to someone who has never experienced time in an American hospital and give them some idea of what to expect. I can’t just leave my telling of these events “dangling” but need to complete the “trip”. May 6 – Tuesday evening -I’ve been going over my insurance claim summery. As it stands now I owe $14,625.03 to the hospital and $1690.05 to other claims for services rendered. A total of $16,315.08. So I will have to gnaw on ... read more

April 7 – Monday - I was having my surgery today. I haven’t eaten anything since Saturday when I was put on a liquid diet. I just chewed on cracked ice. The nurses gave me a bottle of some kind of laxative to clean me out which I drank. It wasn’t as bad as the other stuff they gave me on Friday, or as much. The nurses also gave me some special surgical soap to take a shower with this morning so I dutifully used it to take a shower with. My surgery was scheduled for 1PM. My mother, brother Danny, and sisters Gail and Debbie came by to visit. When they took me down to the surgery floor they were allowed to come and we all got in a little room and visited while they ... read more

April 4 – Friday - April 4 – Friday – The nurses came in around 10AM and gave me a huge jug of some kind of chalky liquid I had to drink. Half before 12 noon and half after 12. It was some kind of liquid laxative which was to help “clean me out” before the colonoscopy that afternoon. I can assure you it worked very well in that respect. I went to the bathroom for a BM several times till I was “clear”. A Dr W. came by and said he was the Lung doctor, and would be checking out the results of the CT aniogram. He asked me what I thought he should be looking for. I told him I guess to see if the cancer had spread from my colon to the lungs. ... read more

March 30 – Harmony - I have been getting progressively shorter and shorter of breath in the past few months and able to do less and less without stopping to rest and get my breath back. I basically had to find a place to sit down or stand till I got my breath back. When I was in Playa del Carmen I managed to do what I wanted to do but had to walk as little as 100 feet at a time without having to stop at a place to sit down, or stop and stand, to get my breath back, then go another 100 feet or so. I must have looked bad because while I was exploring the ruins at Tulum and was sitting down to get my breath back a stranger walked over and ... read more
