25 September – Aguirre Springs to Socorro – I headed out from the Aguirre Springs campground and back over the Organ Mountains to Las Cruces. As I headed West I was facing a long, long line of headlights of cars heading East out of Los Cruces. Evidently most of the personnel working at Holloman Air Force Base and at the Condron Army Air Field have chosen to live in Las Cruces. It is really incredible the amount of gas consumed in this country by people commuting to their work. When I got to Las Cruces I turned north on I-25. I first headed to the rest area north of Las Cruces where I took a break, checked up on a few things on the internet, and had a bowl of cereal for breakfast. I had decided ... read more

September 23 – Monday – Cloudcroft to North of Las Cruces - I came down off the mountain in Cloudcroft and did some rat killing in Alamogordo and then drove across the Chihuahuan desert and over the Organ Mountains pass, then up I-25 to north of Las Cruces for the evening. I had not intended to drive to north of Las Cruces but had intended to go to the Aguirre Springs campground on the Eastern slope of the Organ Mountains. They close the gate going to the campground at 7PM sharp. I got there at 7:20 PM and the park host said the gate was closed. It was about 100 yards from her trailer to the gate and I guess she didn’t want to walk down to it to let me in or whatever but she ... read more

Saturday September 21 – It was brisk at White Sands National Monument. I drove out from Alamagordo to check out the balloon Invitational but the line going in was 2 to 3 miles and creeping along stop and go and so was too long for me so I went around them in the other lane. A policeman stopped me to make sure I was indeed going through and not going to go to the start of the line and try to cut over. I told him I was going through and I did so and then after getting past the entry I turned around and parked on the side of the highway on the other side to watch. While waiting I let down the tailgate of my truck and fixed up a breakfast of peanut butter ... read more

September 20th – Friday - today I decided to drive out to the Solar Observatory on the Sunspot Scenic Byway more for the scenic drive than the observatory as Im really not that interested in Space that much. I figure not that much real is going to happen as far as venturing out into it in my lifetime. I stopped at the Haynes Canyon Overlook and checked it out on the way. When I got to the observatory I looked around a bit but didn’t check out the museum. Actually it kinds of frightens me when they talk about the sun will do this in so many hundreds of millions of years and then do that for a billion years and then something else for another 3hundred and something million years it frightens me because it ... read more

19 September 2013 – Thursday - This morning I checked out the town of Cloudcroft. It was a neat little town with the usual tourist stores and restaurants. Hwy 82 goes through the town and has some restaurants, lodging etc, and also Burro Avenue a block over has some more of the tourist area usual stuff. I explored it a bit and ate at a café called “Dave’s”. The food was very disappointing. I guess if all you get is tourist and you serve them each once that is plenty enough to stay in business. Their ice cream must have been good as it was served from a small window to the porch eating area and half the New Mexico State Police in full SWAT gear were out there eating ice cream cones. Cloudcroft was under ... read more

Tuesday September 17 – Harmony to Cloudcroft, New Mexico – I got up early and departed Harmony around 0900. I went through Temple/Belton and out on Hwy 190 towards Lampasas stopping at San Saba to check out the Mill Pond Park. It was quite impressive and the water with a good breeze made certain areas of it quite cool. After visiting the park I had some disappointing beef enchiladas at a local restaurant and then headed west towards Eden. I checked out the “Garden of Eden” while I was in Eden but didn’t walk through it as it was hot. After Eden I drove on to San Angelo and had intended on checking out the State Park there but upon seeing the dam for the lake remembered having went there earlier this summer and the river ... read more

I had intended to go back to the Montrose – Ridgeway area of Colorado in the last half or September but I have revised my plan and am now visiting the Alamogordo Balloon Invitational in New Mexico. It is held at the White Sands National monument and in Alamogordo on September 21stand 22. After this I will explore the Lincoln National Forest for a bit and then attend the Hot Air Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, scheduled for October 5th to October 15th. I attended the Balloon Fiesta on October 5th to 9th in 2011. This is blogged about in trip 7 of my blogs. The weather was very cold, windy, and rainy most of that event but the times it cleared up enough still made the event worth attending. It was awesome. Hopefully I will get ... read more

Pagosa Springs to home – August 1st and 2nd August 1st - This morning I left from Ute Campground west of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, and I actually was blessed with cool weather all day. I went from Pagosa Springs to Santa Fe which is a really scenic drive and was cool all the way. I had considered stopping in Santa Fe for 2 to 3 days and if it was earlier in my trip I probably would have done so but by now was just thinking of getting home. It was such a shame really as the weather in Santa Fe was perfectly cool and clear and it was easy to imagine how I could spend a pleasantly cool few evenings at the square. I have been to Santa Fe a couple of times before and ... read more

North America » United States » Colorado July 31st 2013

July 31 – Wednesday – I awoke early at the Lake Fork Campground by the Blue Mesa Dam of the Blue Mesa Reservoir. It was cold so I started up the truck and warmed it up and turned on the heater and warmed up the inside of the truck. I just relaxed a bit and woke up a bit and let the truck warm up. After a bit I tossed off the covers, let the seat back up and started down the road west on US route 50 toward Montrose. Montrose is the only city of any size in this part of Colorado so if someone wants to eat, gas up, or rent a room it is the place to do it. In and of itself it doesn’t have much to offer in the area of ... read more

North America » United States » Colorado » Redstone July 30th 2013

July 30 Tuesday – Redstone, Penny Hot Springs, Avalanche Ranch - After the flash flood of the night before I woke up to a beautiful day. The road crews had worked all night and I was able to get to my campsite of the previous day and retrieve the few items I had left there to mark the site as “taken”. I then eased into town on the county road side of the river and stopped at the General Store to have a look around and have my morning cup of coffee. So I got my cup of coffee and relaxed on the porch a bit and just took in the view and general ambiance of Redstone. Redstone is a beautiful little town on the aptly named Crystal River. It is open to one side and ... read more
