Steamboat Springs
I enjoyed your blog on Steamboat Springs and plan on reading others. I am currently in Pueblo. I, too, love to travel, only I "rough" it in a 24 foot motorhome! I have explored the US for the past 5 years and spent much time in Colorado. Thanks for sharing.

Thank
Thanks for the comment. If you have been traveling for 5 years are you blogging somewhere. I'm sure the stories of your travel would be very interesting.

Camping
I guess from your blogs that you mostly camp out - is that your tent?
19th July 2013

tent
No. That is my Nephew's tent and "shelter" from the sun over the picnic table. I have a tent but only use it to mark a site as taken in "tent only" campgrounds. I sleep in my truck because it affords much better protection from the elements and I can see what is going on around me. Where I stay depends on what kind of trip I am taking and where I am going, and more about the "experience" than anything else. Camping is the best way to experience the "real" Colorado. A motel is a motel if it is in Colorado or Cleveland, and if resort is in the name that means that it cost more than I am willing to spend. I have stayed overnight in Wal Mart Parking lots and at Rest area because I like "free". When I toured Europe last year I stayed in hostels because I had never stayed in hostels before and wanted to see what it was like. Next time I will probably stay at B & B's although I have a strong objection to paying the same for a room for just me as for 2 or more. Same with hostels, if I rent a single room I have to pay for 2 people. Since most of the places in the US and Canada are such a long ways from Texas I will probably start flying to locations in the future and renting a small motorhome to explore, at least out west. The US, unlike Europe doesn't have a very good public transportation system except in select cities, and out West having ones on transportation is essential. I am currently staying in Denver because it makes a very good "home base" for exploring the Mountain States and is a hub for US airlines.

You are making the circuit
I lived in Denver in the mid 70's and we used to drive to Leadville for the scenic views along the way. We'd have lunch at Pizza Hut because it was one of the few restaurants in town at the time. Happy travels.

in the 70's
I'll bet Colorado was so much less developed than now. The Baby Boomers have overbuilt here as much as everywhere else. Still it is stunningly beautiful and I always try to take the road less traveled. Right now I am in Steamboat Springs exploring the local area. The hot springs here are great.

WELL ORGANISED
Hi William You sound very well organised for your trip...I like to do the picnic thing too , and a thermos of hot water for the tea is always a must. Magnificent scenery. Cheers Lynne

Picnic
Thanks. Having my picnic lunch comes in handy. On this last trip I took it to the overlook of the falls near Steamboat Springs and enjoyed it while enjoying the view of the falls.

views
Thanks. The views from mountain overlooks are stunning all across Colorado.

Red Rocks
One of my dreams is to see a concert at Red Rocks. A couple of years ago when we were in Denver we climbed those stairs. What a work out! There were young kids running up and down the stairs for exercise. It was unbelievable. We would have used the upper parking lot if we'd known about it. The White Star campground looks like a great location.

stairs
Yes, I can hardly believe that I've been here over a month and the altitude is still making it difficult for me. I would have thought I would have gotten more used to it by now. I made a point about mentioning the upper parking lot so people would know about it. That White Star campground was nice.

You're very welcome.

Gearing up
Sounds like you've done your research and are ready to head over the pass. We love the drive around Aspen, Glenwood Springs and over to Steamboat Springs. Such a beautiful part of the country. We are like you in that we like sleeping with the windows open. Happy travels.

Colorado Rocky Mountain High
I lived in Denver centuries ago. I'd forgotten about Idaho Springs. It was a village. I'll bet it is bigger now. Glad you continue to have a good time.

Idaho Springs
I believe Idaho Springs is hemmed in too much by the mountains to grow. It is a great place to take a break on a trip if using I-70. They have a nice park by a rushing river across the street from the visitors center : )

Your truck
What kind of mileage do you get on your truck? How many miles do you have so far? Any mechanical problems?
20th June 2013

Truck
My truck has 335,950 miles on it. I get about 15 miles to a gallon. I know that isn't that much but I consider that not having a car payment and only having to pay liability insurance makes a difference. Besides having a truck with a camper top on the back allows me to carry everything I need. But the most important factor to me is survivability in a wreck. I will probably survive in my truck while the little cars will get smashed up. My life is worth more than any amount of money. I do have mechanical problems from time to time but I honestly can't say my truck has been in the shop any more than lots of new cars I have seen that friends and family have, and still the cost of a repair every now and then is less than that of full coverage insurance and a truck payment each and every month.

Nice size Elk
Better not to mess with them. Be safe and watch out for those fires.
