Keep smiling!
As one who spent a short while in hospital last year, it was interesting to read about your experience. I'm pleased you were well cared for and now on the road to full fitness - although your bank balance seems to have suffered badly. You might like to compare this with my own experience (my tongue-in-cheek blog is at: http://www.travelblog.org/Europe/United-Kingdom/England/Hertfordshire/Hertford/blog-808290.html). I too have had more than my fair share of tests, scans, drugs, cancer scares and on-going treatment and medication. While I may have paid contributions from salary during my working life, I certainly continue to get my money's worth from Britain's excellent - and free - healthcare system. Sorry if this makes you a bit jealous. :-(

A different reality.
I must say that the whole experience is very different from what it would be like here in Sweden where healthcare is free. I'm glad though that you're healthy again, enjoy your future travels even more after this!

Thanks for the details!!!
And the great news.

details
You're welcome. I appreciate your concern. I know this blog isn't strictly a travel blog but many people have never been in a hospital before and so I wanted to share what was a first in a lifetime experience for me with others who may wonder what it is like. It surely was a journey to a place I had never been to before for me.

Hospitals
Our thoughts are with you. It looks like you went through all of this a couple of months ago. I certainly hope you are feeling better now.

Hospitals
William I am so sorry to hear about your health issues. I am certainly glad you didn't have any acute issues while you were out of the country. I will send you a private message.

shortness of breath
Thanks. I was able a bit to downplay my shortness of breath while I was in Colorado, rationalizing it as the altitude. But Playa del Carmen was at sea level so that didn't work there. I knew I was going to have to find out what the problem was when I got back. This was the first time in my life that I had a health problem that my healthy body didn't throw off after a bit. It just wouldn't go away.

It's been a few months since you were in the hospital...
so I pray everything turned out well, and that you don't have cancer. Please don't leave us hanging.

Serenity
Glad you are sleeping in on your holiday and taking it easy. No need to rush during all of this exploration. Your time is going quickly. The beaches look lovely. I've been to Cancun but not Playa. Will you take the bus to Telum. It is lovely. A nice day trip.

Playa and Tulum
I haven't been to Cancun but I think for me personally Playa was a better choice. It is centrally located and makes an excellent "home base" for exploring from. Cancun is an hour bus trip away, Cozumel is a short boat trip, and Tulum Ruinas is only a 35 peso Collectivo ride away. There are also several Cenotes which could be visited from here, although a car rental might be required. For the frugal traveler such as myself it was the perfect choice.

Tulum
Look forward to hearing your views on Tulum . We had a guide who was very knowledgable about Mayan history and culture. Keep up the walking - it's so good for you and you see so much exploring on foot. Interesting what you say about beaches being public but hard to get too. Enjoy your last days in Mexico .

Tulum
I took the collectivo to Tulum Ruinas for 35 pesos and had a good walkabout and exploration there. I especially enjoyed the fantastic views of the sea from the cliffs there. I think the views from cliffs is what I enjoyed the most about California, Ireland, and Greece as well.

Money
Hi William Good to see you on the move again. We foind hat getting some money out of an ATM in Mexico was paying a high fee and exchange rate. But heyho you gotta have money sometimes. And sometimes you just have to get a cab - and not struggle too much. Have a great trip. Lynne

taxi
A good portion of the reason I travel is so that I will get my walking in each day. It’s more interesting walking a different path each day. Still with cabs so cheap and after they keep giving me so much food every time I eat out, it is very uncomfortable walking on a full stomach. So I walk down to 5th street or up to 30th street to eat and then take a cab back.

Welcome to Mexico
Looks like you've learned a lot in a short period of time. The color of the water there is so amazing. We will look forward to your blogs.
