We covered a lot of highway on our road trip through New England and Quebec including the cities of Newport, RI; Hyanis, MA; Boston, MA; Salem, MA; Portland, ME, Quebec City, QC, Montreal, QC; and Southington, CT. Day 1 - We picked up our rental car from JFK Airport and headed out of Long Island, up the New York state coastline. We stopped at Rye, NY, for a snack lunch and visited the local beach and park. Our next stop was the Mystic Seaport, CT, where we viewed the tall mast sailing ship and other nautical memorabilia. The driving portion of driving trips always takes longer than planned (but less than what Google Maps tells you). We arrived in Newport, RI at about 5pm with just enough daylight to really enjoy the Cliff Walk trail along ... read more

Back in September, Richard and Ann started their grand adventure........... It all began with a 2am start from Vancouver to make a 7am super cheap $300 (including taxes) flight from Seattle, via LA to New York JFK. The first night we met up with Ada (our friend we were staying with in NYC), and she took us out to Times Square, Jappa 55 Karaoke bar and finally for sketchy Chinese food at Wo Hop in Chinatown. A great start to our trip! Day 1 in NYC include a walk around Greenwich Village, including local musicians at Washington Square, and the best tarts from Pasticceria Rocco on Bleeker St. Ann had booked us for a gastronomic delight including chefs from all over the country preparing the favourite lamb dishes at the Lamb Jam event at City Winery. ... read more

Carl and I really enjoyed our stay at the Ramada Grand Caymanian. The staff were really friendly and we were away from the tourist hordes, but we had to hike 2 kms to the Seven Mile Beach or 5 km into town. We tried a repeat of Friday night on the Saturday but didn’t find the regulars until late in the evening. We had dinner at Coconut Joe’s, then stopped by the Palms to find a slightly older crowd dancing away, then we walked 5km up the beach to the real party spot – Calico Jack’s. We had about an hour to watch the mosh pit before everything closed up because Cayman Rules require a midnight shut down on Saturday (so everyone makes it to church on Sunday morning). We took it easy on Sunday and ... read more

I visited with the Jave family for most of my stay in Toronto. Carl’s nephew, Joshua, was so happy to see his uncle. We also managed to meet up with a bunch of friends – Alex, Steve, Alistair, Brishen, Joanne, Beth and Richie. Carl talk me walking around half the city including the University of Toronto (UofT), the Art gallery of Ontario (AGO) and the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). The dinosaur fossils section was particularly well presented. We had some fabulous meals including Lobster and Chinese Food. I managed to find a special present for Ann that she will have to wait for until I get back. We left for the Cayman Islands on a Friday. We flew over Varadero, Cuba during the flight. We walked out from the airport to Georgetown where Carl enjoyed his ... read more

Hi Friends and Family, Carll and I both arrived safely in Toronton although Carl was a day late and a Sterling short. Air Canada was acting up and blocked pets on the flight. As most of you know, it's always better to take Westjet unless your flight is free on points. :) Beth picked me up from the airport and we headed down to Niagara Falls. As it's not the season, a lot of the tourist options were shut down like the Maid of the Mist and the tunnels behind the falls. Beth had two main priorities - breakfast and the Hershey Store. I made a new friend outside the store (see photo). We took a bunch of photos at the falls highlighting the great time Beth and I had and how happy she was to ... read more

Dear Friends and Family, Ann and I had a fabulous time visiting Iceland. We drove down to Seattle on Feb 8 and managed to find our parking company which was about 5 kms from the airport. We had an empty flight so managed to sprawl out. We lost 8 hours due to the time difference and arrived at 7am the next day to a white wonderland at Keflavik Airport. We caught a bus into Reykjavik, which dropped us right at our hotel. The sun was just starting to rise around 9:30am when we headed out for the day. We walked up a small hill to see the Pearlan. It consists for six decommissioned water tanks that have been upgraded into the Saga Museum, a look out and restaurant. We could see all of Reykjavik and out ... read more

Europe June 22nd 2010

Ann and Richard in Europe Part 3 We took the train to Luxembourg City today with our erstwhile guide, Masa, in tow. There was beautiful scenery in the hills of southern Belgium and Luxembourg. A fun quick walk from the train station brought us to our fancy hotel. We took the high road into the centre of town for lunch at the Place d’Armes. We saw the celebration for the last leg in a big bike race, then walked around the Palace of the Grand Duchy. Ann’s friend, Tanya, was working across the border in Germany and she drove over to meet us. We had a fabulous second day walking around the river and lower sections of Luxembourg City. It was fabulous to see the green swath of land around the city. We had a picnic ... read more

Richard and Ann in Europe 2010 Part 2 In Amsterdam, we tried pankoken for breakfast before walking the canals to see the Bloominmarket (flower market), Rijksmuseum, strolled the Damm (shopping street), and through the Red Light District. The next day we took the canal boat tour, stopped by Anne Frank’s house, snacked on bitterballen, joined a free walking tour (great stories of the city), and were invited by the guide (Shannon) for a dinner of Stampot (sausage and cabbage potato). We headed out for a fun pub crawl that evening with new friends: Joe, Tim, Becky, Hannah and David. We nicknamed Joe ‘ Daddy Mac’ and helped him get photos with all the girls. The next morning we caught the train to Brussels even though it wasn’t the one we had paid for. A gent named ... read more

Dear Friends and Family, Ann and I have already arrived back from our Europe Trip, so I am adding our stories and photos post-trip. Ann and I awoke at 8am on May 21 to catch our long flight to Great Britain. We arrived at London Gatwick at 8am on May 22 due to the time difference and the flight. We caught the train to Victoria Station where we left our backpacks (only 8 pounds for 24 hours). We took off to tour the city starting at Buckingham Palace, then crossed through St. James Park to the her Majesty's Parade Grounds. We caught a glimpse on No. 10 Downing St., then over to Parliament Square to see Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey. We crossed Westminster Bridge, past the London Eye and started along ... read more

Dear Fiends and Family I must have taken over 500 photos of Angkor Wat so hopefully you get to see some of the best attached. I managed 3 days at the temples including multiple sunrises and sunsets. The best part of the trip so far. SOme of the time, there was not a single person around. I could explore most of the site with only jungle noises to disturb the peace (and Dad, of course). Some of the photos included show the main temple at Angkor Wat (most well known), the Banyon (with dozens of huge faces looking down at you) and Ta Phrom (which has been left in an overgrown state, similar to how the original western explorers found it). I highly recommend getting to some of the more remote tamples that are also overgrown ... read more
