Dear friends and family, Our latest adventures took us to Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, then Melbourne, the capital of Victoria, Hobart, the capital of Tasmania and finally to Canberra, the capital of the country. So it was a tour of the capitals with plenty to see in between. We were pleasantly surprised by the city of Adelaide. It had a good commercial centre and was surrounded by parks. We visited the university, art gallery, museum and walked along the river bank. We drove down to Victor Harbour and walked around Granite Island, then stayed the night in the Barossa Valley wine region. Ann had plenty of wine tastings the next day and I had some highly recommended pizza. On the way down to the Great Ocean Road, we visited with Tom and Susie in ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland » Mount Eden October 8th 2014

Dear friends and family, We've arrived back in Australia from our tour of the North Island of New Zealand. We spent a couple of days in Auckland, "the city of sails". On our first day we took the ferry out to Devonport and hiked both Mount Victoria and North Head. There were lots of historic fortifications where we could wander through the tunnels and gun emplacements, as well as a dicey section of the trail where we clambered over the rocks to reach the maritime museum. We just had enough time to visit with the penguins at Kelly Tartan's Antarctic Adventure. Riley particularly liked the sharks swimming over our heads in the shark tunnels. We even spotted the elusive Woebegone! The next day, we trekked up to Mount Eden and the Auckland Museum. Our driving tour ... read more

Friends and family, Ann, Riley and I have had some grand adventures the last two weeks spending time with Anna and Tom in Brisbane and then a couple days in Cairns. We cruised the Brisbane river and spent some time at the south bank park. We hiked around Mount Coot-tha and found the old gold mine entrance. Based on the locals suggestions, we drove out to the hinterlands of the Sunshine Coast to visit Melany and look out over the Glass House Mountains. From there we drove down to Noosa Head and followed the coastline to see all the beaches. I got to catch up with some travellers from my last three month trip (to Europe in 2000) and have a walk around the city centre. We took a day trip out to Moreton Island to ... read more

Dear friends and family, Ann, Riley and I have begun our 3 month tour of Australia and New Zealand. In Australia, it's called long service leave for over 10 years at a company. We arrived in Sydney and stayed with my god parents, Les and Rosemary. They took us on several day trips including the Hunter Valley and the Blue Mountains and generally made our vacation in Sydney easy. We walked around the city centre and over several days saw the Rocks, Circular Quay, the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, Botanical Gardens, NSW Art Gallery, Hyde Park, Darling Harbour and much more. My buddy Al led us on the Bondi to Coogee cliff walk before a welcome beer at his local Irish pub. We also saw some of the northern beaches including Mona Vale, Avalon and ... read more

Dear Friends and Family, Ann and I had a fantastic time on our last couple trip - also known as a Babymoon. As you can tell, the arrival of baby Riley on January 30 has occupied so much of our time that it has taken me over a year to complete this last travel blog. While we have been on travel hiatus for the last couple months, we have been saving up our money for a big trip this Autumn - we'll be visiting all our friends in Austraila and New Zealand (and Tokyo, Japan) for 3 months from September to November. Lots to look forward to. Some of our highlights from our trip to Washington DC in November 2013 were: The White House The Library of Congress The Smithsonian Natural History Museum The Smithsonian Air ... read more

Dear friends and family, It has been a while since my last entry - was Ann and my honeymoon really a year ago? Since our good friend Kevin moved mountains to get his stag party organised for Mexico, it gave me an opportunity (with wifely approval, of course) to spend a couple days with the boys in Puerto Vallarta and then make my own way across Mexico (fondly remembering a similar trip with my father in 1995) to fly out from Cancun. So the original plan fell apart when Kevin became deathly sick and could not make it to Mexico. As vacations were booked, plans made and tickets non-refundable, most of us headed out anyway to celebrate on Kevin´s behalf. As I had points to use, I stopped over in Santa Monica on the way and ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome September 15th 2012

The end of our trip came too soon (although it's taken me 4 months for my last blog). During our first stop in Rome, we visited the gardens of the Roman History Museum and the Baths of Diocletian. We visited the group of four Late Renaissance fountains located at the Via delle Quattro Fontane and ended up at the top of the Spanish Steps. We took the high road next to the Borghese Park and looked out over the City of Rome from the Plaza del Popolo near the Da Vinci Museum. We met up with a free tour group at the Spanish Steps. The tour took us to the hidden gardens of St. Andrew’s Church and to the Pantheon. The tour was a bit slow so we went our own way and found the Trevi ... read more

Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens September 12th 2012

Dear Friends and Family, We arrived in Piraeus the following morning, a couple kilometres from Athens, Greece. The cruise ship charged $60 each for a transfer to the city but we walked 20 minutes from the terminal and found a metro for less than $3. A half hour later, we arrived in the middle of Athens at Monastiraki station, just a couple metres from the Roman Agora. We viewed the remains of Hadrian’s Library and the Tower of the Winds as we headed up the hill to the Acropolis. We managed to beat most of the tourists to the top of the Acropolis and had a rather unimpeded view of the Parthenon, Erechtheum, the entrance Propylaea and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. As we were on our way down, the hordes descended and we barely escaped ... read more

Dear Friends and Family, As some of you know, I was a little concerned about taking a cruise as I thought I could be bored and there may not be enough to see or do - boy, was I wrong. It was a fabulous experience, a five star hotel on the water, tons to do on-board, and a new city to see every other day. We also met some fabulous people – Tony, Lisa, Shawn, Richane, Mike, and Sherry – who we ate fantastic meals with and explored the various cities. On our way to our first port of call, we had views of Stomboli island volcano, the town of Messina and Mt. Etna on the island of Scilly. We had a full day sailing to reach the harbour at Mykonos. We dwarfed the small town ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence September 3rd 2012

Dear friends and family, We have arrived back safely in Canada so I am completing the next couple blogs in hindsight. From Moscow, we flew back to Warsaw and had a couple restful days in Krakow (which is about 4 hours by train from Warsaw). In our brief stay, we saw the Main Market Square, Wawel Castle, Barbican, and Saint Mary's Basilica. We even found the mouth to the cave of the legendary dragon on Wawel Hill and saw it come out in front of us and breathe fire. We quickly escaped into the night! The next day we flew to Rome from which we were to catch our cruise around the Eastern Mediterranean. We were able to have a couple days in Florence, San Gimignano and Siena before we headed out to sea. We stayed ... read more
