Trucking Travelling alone should be no problem at all on a truck. We travelled from Cairo to Cape Town but that trip was made up of 4 or 5 separate sections. Your best bet might be to check out the web sites of the various trucking companies. We used Dragoman but there are a number of others and they are pretty competitive.
info on trucking Hello there, I just finished reading your article on trucking in africa. Thanks for providing the inside info. I am an Indian and wish to do this sort of thing in March. But I do have my concerns too. I will be traveling alone and will be able to chose the section I want to travel in?
any info will be welcome!

Merry Christmas! Sounds like a goody one. We had a lovely day here - camped out in a vacant (but lovely) house with too much food and a lot of fart jokes and a long and funny game of charades. xx
Not for tourists Well I don't think I ever claimed Houston was a tourist city but just about anywhere else in the city would have been better than downtown. A couple of miles south of the station is the museum district where your day would have been a bit more pleasant and interesting. Not a shopping mall in sight. We used to live just to the west of there. Pat's CBP experience reminded me of a very similar experience about 20 years ago when I arrived at passport control to be told that I was a prohibited person and then ushered into a small ïnterview room where I had to come up with some other way of proving my identity. But it wasn't the US - it was Melbourne.
Thanks Chris & Nikki. Glad you liked the photo. Their main purpose is for our memories so it's a bonus when other people like them.
Holly, thanks for your comment. As you'll see in our next post, we didn't make San Antonio this time (weren't keen on a 3am arrival on the train or on a bus trip that week) but we plan to return to the US next year, after South America, and San Antonio is definitely on the list. Will do some checking out of Kansas City too.
Tintagel I loved your comment about visiting old sites where only the rubble of the past allows your imagination to work. Tintagel has always fascinated me. Did you hear the whisperings of Uther Pendragon and Ygraine? You mentioned visiting the US. Have you been to Kansas City? Not high up on the favorite travel destination list, but very interesting. But, you also mentioned Mexico. San Antonio, Texas, is on the way and holds much of Texas' history as a territory, Republic and state.

England Aye! Cool Interested to read your comments about York and Yorkshire. Its 42 years since I lived there but I loved York and Whitby certainly didn't cost the earth then. But I guess I got myself there by bicycle once, but Honda 90 and by bus. I lived in Redcar and loved the moors. The first time I saw them it was Winter and I thought them bleak too, but in Summer they are stunning.

1460? We know you are right of course. We are looking at late next year at being more of a visit than an actual return. Perhaps more focused travel in the future will be the trick though. The Comeback List will provide a guide. You can just pick the one you want to come along on. Might publish that soon.
1460...? Stuff coming back because of a self-imposed deadline! You didn't spend the last 50 or so years working your guts out to worry about silly things like that. Come back when you want to come back and go when you want to go, without making yourselves nervous about time. Isn't that the whole point? Slowfeet?
Anyway, the longer you travel, the better chance I have to save up and come and meet you. Although, the saving up would be easier if I could rely on some sort of inheritance... x
Brings back memories Thanks for the blog. I did a very similar road trip in 1983, and your blog brought back some happy memories. I think that I even took a photo of the same phone box... And you've given me a great idea for my next big ride!!
Travel through Mexico Thanks Bob. It certainly doesn't sound too good in northern Mexico but the checking we have done so far indicates that there is a reasonably safe way to go through. We will keep a very close eye on the situation and if our worries grow will review our plans.
Your plans I noted that you plan to drive from the U.S. through Mexico, Central America, and South America. Have you checked on how safe this is? i would be particularly concerned about driving through Mexico, with the drug war. But if you have checked on safe routes, then ok. If you need a place to stay for a couple days in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, we would love to have you stay at our home. Bob Carlsen
Our travels over the years have often sought out those places that we haven't yet experienced. We have loved chasing new places, but there is a change underway. We continue to enjoy experiencing other cultures along with their food, beverages, history and ways of life but now, having a little more freedom, we will also make more effort to seek out out such things as music events and festivals, particular natural attractions that we have missed and places where we can better appreciate the history of a place and its people.
The attraction of the road less travelled and the place less visit... full info
