Brittany ferries steamed us into Roscoff at 7am gently bringing us around with ‘doctor waiting room ’ music, just slightly annoying!! By 6.30am we had re-joined Poppy in Harvey, where she had stayed overnight. Roscoff centre was only moments away so we parked up just past the daily market setting up to sell its wares, a wander around found what we were looking for coffee and a pain au chocolat, we had truly arrived in France!! Our first nights stop was Plouescat now a sleepy seaside resort, the coast is littered with huge bolders, in gardens, between houses and all along the coast. A drive further along to our next stop an ex camp site now aire, a cliff top site with easy cliff walks and one to the most westerly point of France, and a ... read more

Europe June 15th 2018

So lets go to Scotland for a Month, well that was the plan but a great celebration stopped us heading north until party date of the 27th of May. So we filled in our time with family and friends and had a great week visiting Fi and Doug in Northampton, Dawn in Leicester and then to Grafham Water to meet cousin Richard for three nights. It was then party time back in Hertfordshire to celebrate Don's 70th Birthday and a great weekend was had by all. So then it was time to turn north again and made it to Clumber Park right in the heart of the Forest and a firm favourite of Mum and Dads caravanning days, a great stop for Poppy too with a lot of forest and water! Heading further north we managed ... read more

En route to Luso & Mata Nacional do Bucao a 105ha National Forest, so we are winding our way up the slopes to Luso a spa town, we are following a sat nav location to a wild camp, the road goes higher and windier, and somehow this isn’t looking promising!! Now I have to say that we find our way to each night’s sleep stop in the same way, but sometimes they are more accurate than others, sometimes they just leave you at a place that looks the most inappropriate stop. Today is not looking hopeful but then we see another motorhome and he takes to a road we hadn’t been happy to attempt, so we take the same road and find a car park, things are looking promising. We are here because another couple (who ... read more

The west coast meets the Atlantic, next stop America! The seas are rougher here, hence the sudden sign of surfers sat on their boards waiting for that perfect wave, Graeme tells me they are too dumpy, and I have to believe him as we actually never see anyone up on their boards!! The cliffs more rugged after the bays of the South are a nice change, the notional days we pencilled in for doing the Algarve surprisingly have taken us a bit longer so we need to crack on up North there is still plenty to see, after a couple of stops we make a long day of it to get North to Obidos. The further north you travel the cork trees give way to the vines again, we have found that there is a thriving ... read more

Just a quick update as we haven’t headed north as the last post suggested, as I have said the best plan is not too plan too hard, and that is just what has happened. You will remember that we weren’t feeling the love of The Algarve, well that all changed when we found ourselves in Lagos the guide book suggest it’s a sunny town (how could they plan that!!) it’s pretty cobbled streets bristle with cafes, restaurants and bars and yes they do but in a more Portuguese way than the Brits abroad way. There is history here too and a genteel walk around the town will have you engaged with what used to be Portugal’s shipbuilding capital, the Marina sits beautifully at the top of the town close to the very busy Aire!! So a ... read more

So I am going to come right out it with and say “ I hate the Algarve” so having got that off my chest, the question you might be asking yourself, is why are we here!! I ought to explain my first visit was back when I was working in London, I asked my Travel Agent to arrange a week’s holiday, and she muted “the Algarve’s nice” I took her word for it and having being picked up at the airport I had that sinking feeling as I was driven into Albufeira, I didn’t un pack my bags but got the train the following morning to Lisbon and had the most incredible holiday. Graeme and I came here when we had the Hotel, an opportunity to borrow someone’s Villa, was a complete disaster (and that is ... read more

So the long awaited trip had a less than promising start!! A trip to get Harvey weighed, started badly, we weighed some 40kg over, we are limited to 3.5t, and we weighed in less clothing but full of Fuel and water, a re-pack urgently needed, we made our way home to collect a rather large Chip from a passing lorry, a quick plead to Emma at Autoglass got us fixed within a couple of hours, the repacking took a little longer and what gave was the water, but more of that later!!!. A smooth sailing to Santander was our reward, as well a beautiful meal, and all very reasonable, aboard the Pont Aven. The following morning saw us sailing into a Sunny and surprisingly, more beautiful city of Santander than had been imagined. We had made ... read more

Well the time is almost upon us when we drive to Portsmouth load us all, and Harvey onto a Ferry and head across the Bay of Biscay, and before anyone says anything, we have most definitely been informed how rough this route can be! but it beats several days of driving through France before we drive south to Portugal, our final destination. As many of you will know the long term aim is to head off into Europe and with a good wind behind us visit and experience all that Europe has to offer, this is still some 2yrs away as I am still routed in West Somerset Council but we will be attempting to take some longer trips until then, so we start with a months long trip to Portugal. There is no firm plan, ... read more

En route from Kandy we make two stops the first to the Botanical Gardens, before the British arrived these were royal pleasure gardens 60 hectares of palm avenues and fruit bats in many of the trees, there is a fine collection of Orchids and it makes for a pleasant couple of hours. A short drive further we come to Kandy Garrison Cemetery, managed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, a fine cemetery a fine memorial to those who died in WW11. The road from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya climbs nearly 1400m and as we climb the temperature drops it also winds through jade green tea plantations the home of Ceylon Tea, we make a stop at a Tea factory unusually quiet as they are having a religious day to pray for a good harvest, we are ... read more

A morning walk along the 'Tank' (manmade lake) before breakfast at Habarana a bounty of water lilly's and abundance of Birdlife. Janika arrives after breakfast to transfer us to our next stop Sigiriya Rock. The Rock appears majestically out of the landscape, a huge hardened magna plug of an extinct volcano. Janika gives us the history whilst he drives, popular myth states that the formation served both Royal and military functions during the rein of King Kassapa, a new theory supported by archaeological evidence, rather than local legend, suggests that The Rock was a Buddhist Monastery, whatever its purpose it is an awesome sight. As you walk towards the steps that will take us to the top of the rock you past ruins of buildings and The Royal Gardens, water gardens, and then the terraced and ... read more
