I wake up as late as I can for breakfast then head to eat as much as I can before it shuts. I’ve had the best night sleep, firmest beds yet. Breakfast is a buffet so there is sausage, Albanian pancakes, cake, cheese, charcuterie, tomates, cucumber, bread and a lot of fruit. There is of course eggs which I can’t eat and cereal with full fat milk, also a no. Still there is plenty of choice. There is a coffee machine and I’m really excited when the guy thinks it’s powder only to come back saying it’s milk. Gutted, thought I was finally getting a real coffee. I am offered alternative but only soy so I pass. I graze more than eat but I eat a lot and take some fruit with me for the next ... read more

Like with Shkoder to Kosovo this is meant to be my tricky travel day but somehow everything just runs on rails. I am up, showered and downstairs by 7. Mark and the American guy whose name I somehow never get are already there. We are just waiting on Alex, luckily she doesn’t keep us long. We walk to the roundabout. My foot is a mess, yesterday’s walking has put blister on blister and I’m in a lot of pain. We have walked past the taxi rank when we realise and I am all set to plough on when one literally stops and offers us a ride. It is 2 euros to the bus station and an absolute no brainer. The American guy gets his ticket, the rest of us have ours so we order coffee. Alex ... read more

I lie in today. I don’t sleep in because the hostel is noisy and about 930 they start hoovering and it goes on for a long time. Around 11 I get up, have a cold shower on my sunburn and head downstairs. There are a surprising number of people around. Emma from Australia and Essen from Finland are about to head for food so I join them. They want a view so I take them to where we were yesterday. We drink a few coffees and have a bagel and bacon. When I ask for mine without eggs he says they can do it but I won’t like it, weirdest response I’ve heard but at least it wasn’t a no. We sit chatting and eating for a while then we head for a wander around some ... read more

I wake up having slept well and my headache had gone. I am going to do the boat today. I head downstairs and find the owner on the desk, she directs me to the pink atm and makes me a coffee. I stop and chat for a bit, there are lots more people. Mainly Aussies and kiwis, a girl from Honduras, a guy from London. It is a really friendly hostel but I have a boat to catch so I head off just before ten. I buy my ticket and go to the furthest boat where I get a seat in the sun. Nobody on my boat is very talkative but that’s fine by me. The boat ride across the lake is beautiful and the captain gives an interesting itinerary in between music from last of ... read more

I head out before work and have another go at getting fruit. I find the old bazaar and buy two oranges, two nectarines and some cherries. Back at the hostel I make an instant coffee and eat my cherries and work from the hostel room for the morning. The cherries are amazing again and I get a task done quite easily and the morning passes quickly. At lunch I change location heading back towards Macedonia Square to the bar we were at the night before. They recommend a flatbread which is okay but nothing special but I work and drink two cokes while getting my calls done. I catch up with Kerry and then around half six I head to the fortress. On my way I pass the corn seller from last night and give him ... read more

I am up at 8 and head out in search of fruit for breakfast. I can’t find anywhere open though so head back for my pick up. At 9am I hear a car horn beep and a man is waving at me from a black BMW. He is the hostel owners brother and after peja I am a bit wary but I have already committed and paid so I get in. He is perfectly pleasant but not overly talkative on the 30 minute drive to the canyon. He drops me off at the end of the road and gives me his business card which lists him as the hostel owner. He says his brother is the manager and I can text him whenever I’m done and he will come pick me up. There are restaurants all ... read more

I have plans around going to a bear sanctuary and a Serbian monastery but when morning comes around I opt for a lie in then I slowly pack my bags taking a very chilled start to the day. Once I’m ready I head to the bus station and as I’m looking for the bus I trip again. This time my leggings are split and my knee is cut. A woman tries to forcibly pull me to my feet but I have to stop her because I need a minute. She is trying to help but yesterday’s ankle is sore and I take a second to catch my breath before helping myself up. I find the Skopje bus and put my big bag under checking it is the right one and doesn’t leave until half 11. The ... read more

I wake early but not rested as I have slept on the floor. It is a struggle to wake up as im so tired but when I do get up and shower I'm relieved that my back feels so much better. As I am running late and it is nearing ten I pick a cafe on the main mother Teresa boulevard that does food and drink. I take a high seat inside near a plug and order coffee. An hour or so later I try to order breakfast but my attempt to remove the eggs fails spectacularly and I am talked into a sandwich and chips. I ask for another coffee but they bring me water. It starts filling up and by 11 the place is really busy. I stay put until 1230 then pay my ... read more

Europe June 22nd 2023

I am up by 8. It is another sunken bed so my back is really starting to hurt. I have been attacked in the night by something bitey so I have a shower which is really hot and helps the bites. I am out and heading into town by 9. It is around a 20 minute walk into the centre of the city and it is already really hot. I find the newborn monument which is the letters NEWBORN, built to commemorate Kosovo's independence as Europe's newest country. Except they are in the wrong order, they now spell NONEWBR and the B and R have Broken Republic on them. I have to google and it seems that as a political statement in the 15th year of Independence and with pressure growing to form a new alliance ... read more

Not a great deal to say today. I had breakfast at the hotel then did two back to back work calls before checking out. I skipped lunch and worked through then at 5 I got the bus to Pristina. It was two hours and 5 euro. I ate apples from breakfast as my lunch. I have picked a hostel near the bus station so it is only a ten minute walk in a residential area carrying my bags. It is really hot and when I make it to the hostel there is a sign with the wifi info and a number to whatsapp. I message and am sent a code and a room number. I head inside. The hostel is cool and my room is cool and has everything I need. Great value for 10 euros ... read more
