Today seemed like a long day waiting for 6 pm to finally come around! I woke up and had a nice breakfast courtesy of Jean-François . His grandson, Mathis, was spending the day with him and Colette had to drive down to Biarritz for a meeting. So, J-F told me he bought Mary Poppins for Mathis to watch on DVD. It was a treat to watch Mary Poppins in French! Good thing I knew the story and all the songs! After the DVD was finished I went out for a walk around Bordeaux for a while and then came back for a little sieste. Finally, it was time to walk to the train station to meet Ken and it was wonderful to see him again! He didn't seem too worse for the wear of traveling and ... read more

I woke up real early again today (darn stomach!) but I had to be on the road for Bordeaux at 9 am so it wasn't all that bad in retrospect. Had a light breakfast of some bread and butter and a small glass of grapefruit juice and some coffee, packed up my clothes that I needed and my computer and was out the door just before 9. The drive was quite easy and it took me about 3 1/2 hours to get from Crocq to Bordeaux. It was interesting to watch the landscape change from evergreen and big deciduous tree forests and pastureland to mostly deciduous trees and vineyards.....from big, winding hills to relatively flat land. The sun shone most of the way and I got through 4 CDs on the way. It's so nice to ... read more

Today I just laid low for most of the day. Still feeling a bit under the weather but I think I'm on the mend as I could eat today :) Yesterday I slept from 9 am to 5 pm with my stomach pains waking me up every hour but last night I slept through the night. I liked that! I had to drive into Guéret today to get the rental car checked because it had a pesky message telling me "le niveau de l'huile à réajuster". That lasted for a bit and then it said "niveau de l'huile correct" and then back and forth for the last 2 weeks. So, today I decided I'd better get it looked at before I make the 4 hour drive to Bordeaux tomorrow. Thank heavens for Google maps :) I ... read more

Well, I am back in Crocq after 2 very nice and busy days in Limoges. Somehow I caught a cold over here and have not been feeling very energetic but that didn't stop us from checking out Limoges and shopping! On our way to Limoges on Wednesday morning we stopped in a town called Bourganeuf. They had a market happening and, of course, we had to check that out as well as the church and the old chateau. We had a nice lunch of "fondu Creusoise" which is bassically an omelette that you pour delicious melted cheese over. Very good but not something you'd want to eat everyday! We arrived in Limoges at around 2:30. When mom and I first got there we drove around for a bit trying to find our hotel. The way they ... read more

Just a quick entry to say I'll write all about Limoges tomorrow after Mom is safely on her way home and I am back in Crocq. Nice here in Limoges. The hotel is quite funky. It's got an amazing collection of old gramophones and phonographs. I'll get a couple of pictures to show. It's also well-situated....just around the corner from the Office du Tourisme and lots of shopping! We hope to get to a porcelain factory today and see if we can afford to buy a tiny piece of famous Limoges porcelain. I am sitting in the Office du Tourisme writing this at their Wifi hotspot. Remembering to slide the Wireless button to ON really helps with connection! Bye for now!... read more

Europe » France » Auvergne » Clermont-Ferrand July 15th 2008

We decided this beautiful, sunny morning, having no set agenda for the day, to head back to Puy-de-Dome region and visit Clermont-Ferrand. It was quite an interesting visit because we had no idea what to look for or even where to go. Heading to the "centre ville" is always a good idea but maybe not always a good idea in a big city with lots of traffic! We did okay, though. As we were entering the city, you come down a very long, steep hill and it was from this vantage point that we saw the entire city....the huge, black cathedral stuck out like a sore thumb! Found a place to park in a parkade just beside a main square. Lo and behold! It was a shopping mall that we parked under! Surprisingly enough we didn't ... read more

Today we woke up to sunshine and blue skies and so we decided to drive east to the next region called le Puy de Dome. This region is known for the many volcanoes in the western part of the region. Puy de Dome itself is an inactive volcano which tourists can visit by 'navette'(shuttle bus) to the top during July in August. Between 2500 and 5000 visitors a day come in the summer and the parking lot at the top has spaces for 150 cars so they use the shuttles. Approaching the area from the west is beautiful. The volcanoes themselves become evident almost as soon as you cross into the region. The panoramas are stunning and continue to be so until you leave the region! Of course, the panoramas are breath-taking in Creuse, too, but ... read more

We left Crocq this morning at around 9:30 am heading in the direction of Lupersat, to the north. They have a Sunday market there and we were going to see what it was like. BUT we didn't find Lupersat! I don't know how I missed the sign pointing to Lupersat, but we drove right by it and ended up in Bellgarde-en-Marche. We were going to go there anyway and when we arrived we found they had a Sunday flea market happening in the main street! We walked around and checked out the wares of the vendors but there wasn't really much of interest. So, on we went further to the northwest to Chénérailles. We knew there was a "brocante et antiquities" fair there and we were delighted to see that it had very beautiful and very ... read more

Today I woke up and walked up to the boulangerie to buy their special "pain feuilleté" (Jean-François - help!??) which is a cross between a croissant and a baguette and they only make it on the weekends. Mom made sure I went out and got some! It's delicious! After we gobbled that down, we jumped in the car and headed out on our day's adventure. We drove to the south west towards a large lake called Lac Vassivière. It's a lovely lake in the south west corner of the Creuse region and a part of it is also in the adjoining, Haute-Vienne region. The first stop of the day was Felletin to buy gas. The little rental car I have seems to be able to get about 900 km/tank (if you run it dry - when ... read more

I woke up today to thunder and lightning and pouring rain! Luckily, it was 7 am LOL Strange to hear and see that first thing in the morning. Usually in Calgary we don't get thunder and lightning until 5 in the afternoon on a hot day! We had planned to go to Felletin for their Friday morning market and to check out the tapestry exhibits there and then head back over to Aubusson to see the tapestry museum. Felletin is about 25 km from Crocq and it took us about 50 minutes to get there after we left at 9 am. The market was wonderful :) Everything you'd expect a French market to be - many meat vendors, many cheese vendors, plenty of fresh produce and assorted other interesting wares. We walked around for a while ... read more
