Today I woke up and walked up to the boulangerie to buy their special "pain feuilleté" (Jean-François - help!??) which is a cross between a croissant and a baguette and they only make it on the weekends. Mom made sure I went out and got some! It's delicious! After we gobbled that down, we jumped in the car and headed out on our day's adventure. We drove to the south west towards a large lake called Lac Vassivière. It's a lovely lake in the south west corner of the Creuse region and a part of it is also in the adjoining, Haute-Vienne region. The first stop of the day was Felletin to buy gas. The little rental car I have seems to be able to get about 900 km/tank (if you run it dry - when I filled it I had driven 815 km). Not bad....especially when it cost 68 Euros (just over $109 Cdn - thanks xe.com!) to fill it! The next stop was Saint-Quentin-la-Chabanne where we checked out an old church (I think they are all old churches in France!). The next town along the small, winding roads was Gentioux which has a Templar church. That area around Gentioux
is also a popular ski area. After Gentioux came Lac Vassivière. It's a beautiful, big lake with some beaches and lots of water sports and camping. I'd love to be able to camp there one day! We drove all the way around the lake and stopped in a few places along the way to take some photos. The next town we stopped in was Royère-de-Vassivière. Another old church 😊 We love them! From that point we drove north up to a small village called Masgot - Village Sculpté. As it was after 1 pm we decided to stop and have some lunch in the tiny restaurant in this tiny village. Are we ever glad we did! The food was absolutely amazing and for 11.50 Euros ( about $18.50 Cdn- thanks again xe.com! lol) we had tabbouleh salad (best I've ever had!), canard (duck) in a beautiful sauce with mashed potatoes with carrots in them, a HUGE plate of different cheeses, and dessert - a delicious apple tart. We were so full and happy!! (Jean-François and Colette - you MUST go try this restaurant...we are leaving the card with the address and phone number on the kitchen table for you!). After
we talked to the owner/chef for a bit we went walking around the village (a walk was definitely necessary after that meal!) and looked at all the carved stone pieces all over the place! After we left that village we made our way back to Crocq along more winding and picturesque roads. In all, we traveled 150 km or so in just under 7 hours! It was a wonderful day! Tomorrow we will go to a market in a village called Lupersat and then to Chénérailles for an antiquities exposition. Looking forward, also, to tomorrow's "grillée (BBQ!) with our new friends from Crocq!
