Asia » Vietnam » Mekong River Delta March 22nd 2008

Here is the Mekong Delta blog. It was a great three day tour with Delta Adventure travel starting from Saigon early on the Thursday and arriving in Phnom Penh in Cambodia on Saturday night. We started off with a four hour fast boat trip from Saigon to Cai Be seeing the local river life including all the houses, boats and Saigon docks. In Cai Be we saw the floating market and visited some local sweet making villages! We arrived at the homestay at around 5.00pm and after getting settled had a cooking class. The family were really nice and made us all feel welcome. It was a definite highlight of Vietnam. I got up in the morning at 5.30am and watched the sun come up over the Mekong and saw all the locals leaving their houses ... read more

Hue is the historical capital of Vietnam and has some major tourist spots which take a day to see including the Citadel, Forbidden Purple City, war museum, boat trip and the Thien Mu Pagoda. I was only there for 2 days and to be honest the sights and the city itself were a disappointment. The DMZ tour however was great and although it was a long day (6am-6pm) it gave you a good picture of how the Vietnam War was fought in this region by visiting the Khe Sanh US firebase which had a museum, crashed helicopters, old shells and bombs and a bunker. We also saw the Ho Chi Minh trail but the best sight was the Vinh Moc tunnels. These tunnels gave an excellent picture of how the local population dealt with and survived ... read more

Hi everyone. Thanks for your comments and messages over the last few weeks. Its great to hear from you all and that the blogs are coming out ok and readable!!. Keep them coming and also let me know how things are going back home and any gossip!!. Well surprise surprise I'm about 3 weeks behind again on blogs and have got ones on Hoi An, Hue and Saigon to publish but I'll get there soon enough. So Sapa seems a vague and distant memory but I'll try and describe what it was like, with the help of my trusty guidebook. Quote from guidebook 'SAPA is a magical combination of alpine landscapes, ethnic cultures and bracing mountain air' It was discovered by a Jesuit missionary in 1918 and in the 1920's the French decided to develop SAPA. ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Red River Delta » Hanoi February 24th 2008

Hi all, Sorry to bombard you with blogs the last few days but we're almost up to date now!! Vietnam was the place I'd been really looking forward to seeing and its been great so far ( Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa, Hoi An and Hue) and although some of the locals don't seem to be as friendly (in Hanoi) as those in Thailand and Laos the cities and sights are superb. Hanoi old quarter was my favourite place and you could wonder for hours having a nose at all the shops and relaxing in the cafe's and bars. Old Hanoi, Red Bar, Le Pub are great places. The DVD shops are a must-$1 for a film that has just come out in the cinema in the UK!! We arrived on the Friday night and went to ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vientiane February 24th 2008

Vientiane has been my favourite city so far. Its small with a population of only 200,000.00. We spent 2 days there and on the first night had a great meal on the river where you cook your own food on these barbecues they put in the middle of the table. There is not much to do in terms of sightseeing but its great to just wonder the streets and soak up the local atmosphere. The hotel was central and had a nice courtyard where you could hang out. Purchased a Beer Laos t-shirt and a few souvineers. The rucksack is starting to get full now I'll have to send some stuff back from Bangkok before I head down to Oz. This was also the part of the trip where it started to get cold! After a ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Luang Prabang February 10th 2008

Luang Prabang is a lovely town with a French colonial feel about it. We stayed in a hotel a 5 minute tuk tuk ride from the centre and spent 3 days in total chilling out in the town, having massages for $3, seeing the temples, sampling the local food, banana shakes and of course beer loas!. The waterfall was amazing and about an hours truck ride away. They had a small zoo with a tiger and local bears. After 3 days of relaxation we took a bus to Vang Vieng. Unfortunately we arrived late at night and were leaving at 2.00pm the next day for Vientiene the capital of Laos so we had no time to go tubing. I'll have to go back in March for that !! :) ... read more

After CM we drove to Chiang Khong in order to cross the border into Laos. CK is a small town with not much there but we found a nice place to eat and a hippie bar. The hotel overlooked the Mekong river and had fab sunrise views at 5.30am. It was soon time to pile into some Tuk Tuks and clear Thai immigration to cross the Mekong to Laos soil and join our boat crew for a 2 day journey down the Mekong. Clearing Laos immigration was pretty quick and then we changed some Thai Bahts into Laos Kip ( 20,000 kip to 1 dollar so you get lots of notes!!). The scenary along the Mekong was superb and we stopped off at Pak Beng for the night which is a nice sleepy town. On the ... read more

Hi eveyone. Its been a few weeks since the last blog entry so thought I'd update you all as I've been to lots of place since Ko Lipe. I flew from Krabi back to Bangkok on 4th Feb to join the GAP Adventures Bangkok to Hanoi via Laos tour. After another long journey from the airport in the Bangkok traffic I got to the Royal Hotel just in time for the 6.00pm introduction meeting where everyone met up and we sorted out plans for the following few days. After that we went for a meal off the Khoasan Road and had an early night. It was a really friendly group of 13, mostly Canadians, a few welshies and one from USA. The next day in Bangkok we went to Wot Po to see the reclining Budha, ... read more

Hi hope everyone back home is doing ok. Its taken me ages to upload pictures in this internet cafe so I'll keep the text short on this one and do some longer blogs from Bangkok next week. Ko Lipe is in the Ko Tarutao National Marine Park and is an amazing place! After a 7 hour boat journey from Ko Lanta through stunning scenary to the Maylasian border it was more sun, sea and sand! The accomodation at the Varin was superb, the people are really friendly, barbecues and bars on the beach, lovely little village with shops and no sign of any rain so far! Its Friday morning at the moment and I'm back in Lanta on Long beach, going on a trip to the Emerald Cave 2moro on Ko Mook then its a big ... read more
