Mekong river Vietnam Cai Be
Local fisherman casting net Here is the Mekong Delta blog. It was a great three day tour with Delta Adventure travel starting from Saigon early on the Thursday and arriving in Phnom Penh in Cambodia on Saturday night.
We started off with a four hour fast boat trip from Saigon to Cai Be seeing the local river life including all the houses, boats and Saigon docks. In Cai Be we saw the floating market and visited some local sweet making villages! We arrived at the homestay at around 5.00pm and after getting settled had a cooking class. The family were really nice and made us all feel welcome. It was a definite highlight of Vietnam. I got up in the morning at 5.30am and watched the sun come up over the Mekong and saw all the locals leaving their houses on their little boats to go to work. We got picked up at 7.30 so we could go back to Cai Be and get the bus to Vinh Long ( with a few more floating markets on the way!!).
The boat trip from Vinh Long to Chau Doc was an overnighter, the sunset was amazing here and we sat out on the deck
having a few beers while we trudged along the Mekong. Went to bed around 10.00pm and watched a few episodes of Prison Break ( season 2 now). Didn't get much sleep as the engine was really loud and I'm sure we crashed into another boat at some point in the night! We managed to fit in another floating market in the morning just before we transfered to a smaller boat to see some minority villages and get to the border crossing point.
Crossing the border took around 1 1/2 hours, mainly hanging around for the Cambodian visa's to be issued and then it was back on the boat and we were in Cambodia at last!!
