Here we go! We are in Cottonwood at Dead Horse Ranch. It got it's name from the family who originally settled here. They had looked at several different ranches in the area and the one they chose was the one with the "dead horse" on it. When they sold the area to the State, there was a stipulation that the name remain "Dead Horse Ranch". It is a beautiful area. There is a big lagoon in the park that we drove to before we headed for the camping area. It's a really nice day area for picnicing - even had a couple of pretty herons right on the shore. On the way here, we saw this town way up in the hills and found out that it is an old mining town called Jerome. Cottenwood was ... read more

What a day! We headed up to Lost Dutchman and hiked up to the top - and beyond. I've indicated where we went in a couple of pictures here. Allie did great with the packs - still very light, not much in them. We had some serious steep rocks to get up and over, and although she tried to find another way, she ended up coming up the same route as us. Once she got up, her whole attitude changed. It was like a self confidence boost that was so visable! We were so proud of her! And of us. We really did some climbing today. I'm pretty sure that I have created a monster - letting Bob take the lead on these hikes. Pretty scary. He's doing great though. Hardly sore at all. And our ... read more

Some of you may wonder if we felt the earthquake. I wouldn't normally admit to this. Just know that, Okay? I am just saying this to answer all of your questions as to whether or not we felt the 7.2 earthquake centered, I guess, somewhere in California.... Yes. We felt it. We were laying by the pool and I felt my chair moving - it was just ever so slightly rocking from side to side. I said "Bob, is your chair moving, because mine is moving". He said "yeah, my chair is moving" and we knew that we were having an earthquake, but didn't saying anything else about it. Until Angela called and asked if we were okay, and did we feel the earthquake... ... read more

We went for a short hike yesterday to try out Allies new saddlebags. All we put in them was a bag of cheetoes (for Allie - her favorite treat) and some soy nuts. She wasn't really thrilled about it. Walked pretty slow the whole way. We figure she will get used to it and start to enjoy being a participant... we hope at least. Anyway, these pictures are of Silly Mountain. It was a nice hike, very strenuous in places, but enjoyable none-the-less. Happy Easter everyone! Spring is a re-birth of the earth and we can all take advantage of that rebirth by asking God into our lives. Ask forgiveness for sins past, start over fresh with a new heart, a new mindset, a new worldview. Easter is such a wonderful opportunity to re-focus our energies ... read more

We left fairly early this morning but not as early as we had hoped. We headed up Bush Hwy to 77 to get to Payson and then a little further east to head down another dirt road that is supposed to be as scenic and beautiful as the Apache Trail. We were going to look for another trail to hike, but weren't sure which one we'd be doing. We saw a state park sign and lit on down the road to find Stewart Dam which for a small dam was pretty darned impressive. Beyond that, Suguaro Lake that had been created by the dam. It was beautiful! A few boats and jet skiis skattered around this huge lake surrounded by hills covered with green. When we got to payson, we found ourselves at 4800 feet and ... read more

We are hikin' FOOLS people! I am SO proud of Bob - he is pushing himself pretty hard and although we anticipated him being pretty sore, he is doing quite well. Of course it helps considerably that there is a hot tub here at the park. Tuesday we went up to Goldfield Ghost Town, an old mining town with a little train that went around the area, mine tours, a reptile zoo that cost way too much to entice me, and a lot of buildings that I'm not sure were really there before 1970. We didn't do a lot of investigating here. It was quite the tourist destination and we had a lot to do. We left there and went up to Lost Dutchman State Park and went hiking up to the top of Jacobs Crosscut ... read more

We have started doing more Hiking together. Bob is doing way better - not getting as sore afterwards, so he is able to build his body up enough to be able to handle it. Which is GREAT! I'm used to taking long hikes with Al, but he hasn't been able to. We went up to Romero Ruins yesterday which is just about a mile and a quarter loop. There isn't much left of the ruins. Mostly just piles of rocks here and there and plackards saying that they were ruins. I guess we believed it... Anyway, we found another trail that was about a 3-4 mile loop that wound through the foothills. It lead up to a small waterfall and stream and then looped back toward the park. The wildflowers up there were truly amazing. Such ... read more

You cannot tell me that there is not a Creator who orchestrated everything on this earth. There are things out there to see in this world that are just incredible. There is just no describing what we saw today. We walked up toward the Romero Pools (we couldn't go all the way because we found out half way there that we couldn't take Al and she was with us). The views were incredible and the Saguaro Cactus (Cacti?) were all over the place. Then we drove up to Mount Lemmon. They are still skiing up there so we couldn't ride the lift up the mountain. There is a base of 60" of snow - in Arizona. Huhlloohhh.... Arizona? This drive was about 23 miles of constantly changing scenery that went from about 2500 feet all the ... read more

This is some beautiful country here, people! Today was pretty nasty but we got some great pictures yesterday and it's supposed to be back up in the 70's tomorrow. The critters around here are amazing and so fun to watch! They are performing all sorts of spring rituals that are just fascinating. I haven't gotten pictures of all of the birds and other critters and there are some that just haven't turned out very well, but we have two weeks here to see what we can get. Tomorrow we are going to head southwest and go to the Sonora desert museum, the Honda race kart track, and then over to the Mount Lemmon ski area (that's right - I said SKI area). They have a ski lift that operates all year. We're going to ride it ... read more

Good morning everyone! When we left Kartchner Cavern State Park for the West side of the area, we had no idea what we were in for. We came across 82 and it was an incredible drive! I am sorry that Arizona has had a hard winter this year, but I gotta say that it is showing us a side of Arizona that I think we are very blessed to be shown. The drive was all rolling green hills - very pretty and not what I expected in AZ. It was a different green than Washington. A deep deep dark green and then just a dusting of green on the lower elevations. We are at DeAnza RV Resort in Amado now. It's a fairly new park created from an old Greyhound race track and is still in ... read more
