Banana pancakes for breakfast while sitting on Ao Lo Dalam beach reading High Fidelity and pondering whether or not barnacles on the underside of a boat know they are upside down; this is the daily grind of life on Koh Phi Phi and probably close to what Jack Johnson keeps writing songs about. By night its buckets of Thai whiskey and Red Bull and dancing like a maniac while watching the "international fire cabaret", which consists of fire poi (goddamn hippies), fire rope (extreme skipping) and fire limbo but its essentially a waiting game until a westerner gets a face full of fire and rewarded with a free beer, so this is probably close to what any dance tune bangs on about. We came here on a boat from Phuket having only stayed one night in ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Wilayah Persekutuan » Kuala Lumpur May 5th 2009

The greatest thing about Kuala Lumpur is you can get a McDonald's meal between 12-3pm everyday for $1 - only joking! This is home to the Petronas Towers; only recently it was crowned the largest twin tower structure in the world - something I would keep quiet eh. The towers were also used for the climactic heist scenes in the romantic crime thriller Entrapment starring Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta Jones. Unfortunately its not quite as glamorous in real life and houses petroleum based companies and archives, bah. I must talk about the traffic here, its crazed, if there is a line in the road they will cross it, pavements are fair game and the horn is something that is not used cautiously. Someone will beep to let you know they exist then everyone else will ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Pahang » Pulau Tioman April 28th 2009

I am Jack's broken heart, we have now left Tioman... Apparently you go to Tioman for what is under the water, but as much as that is true the island itself is an untrodden, untrampled paradise - there is no urgency to develop here, everything and everyone is mellow. Nothing else matters, there is a healthy disregard for time with no need to run around at such a speed - you may think its lazy, i don't mind i think you've crazy, when you can watch the sunset every night who cares. So, admittedly there is not much to write here because nothing much out of the ordinary happens on Tioman apart from the daily rubbish dump which is duly rifled through by the horde of Makac monkeys facing off against monitor lizards, ferrel cats, as ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Melaka » Melaka City April 19th 2009

The straits of Johor which seperates Singapore from Peninsula Malaysia is only a kilometre across but the difference between the two countries is vast. Gone are the western comforts, such as the English language and toilet paper. Having successfully navigated through the border crossing into Malaysia and into Johor Bahru (according to my Visa my reason for visiting is 'Official Mission' - this was never questioned), we were then supposed to get on the same bus to Larkin Sentral where we could get another bus the 244km to Melaka but here is where it all started to go wrong. We went the wrong way out of the terminal and weren't allowed back through due to inconvenient one way border control rules. So this landed us in the middle Johor Bahru - a state capital the Lonely ... read more

Ergh, jet lag does exist, i could sleep forever and as Robert Plant said, i've been dazed and confused for so long its not true - although i'm sure he wasn't talking about this feeling. Perhaps spending the whole 13hr flight watching films back to back on a screen no more than 4 inches from my face didn't help, my eyeballs were so dry i couldn't shut my eyelids. Prawn and cabbage noodles for breakfast though, oh yes. The first thing you notice about Singapore is how clean it is - so clean infact that i almost choked on a small cloud of smug when i arrived. No chewing gum is allowed and no cars over ten years of age amongst many other rules which keep this place a considerable big brother state. Clean it may ... read more

“Not all those who wander are lost.” - J. R. R. Tolkien So it begins, the beast approaches, savouring the meal to come... The apprehension receeds as having read several guidebooks on how to approach this journey i have absorbed some top tips, such as 1) always remember when travelling by bus to sit in the middle seats of the vehicle as you are less likely to die if there is an accident. Brilliant. 2) Beware of scammers! - yes sir, "i usually like to be kissed before i get fucked" 3) Always carry Imodium, i heed this warning well and 4) Beer is cheaper than water - nothing exceeds like excess! Keep an eye on these rantings as a possible side effect of the malaria medication is psychosis - i look forward to it. So ... read more
