South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Uyuni February 16th 2014

With an 8:30am pick up and only a 15 minute drive from San Pedro to the border, it wasn't long until we had said goodbye to Chile for the final time and hello to Bolivia. With the Bolivian border being little more than a garden shed with a flag, it was a pleasant five minute border crossing (unlike the 4 hrs Chile/Argentina crossing). Once we passed the border, it was then time to change from minibus to 4x4, which we would be travelling across the arid Bolivian desert in over the next three days. With images in our head of being stuck on a three day tour with a bunch of Argentinians or even worse...Germans, it came as a pleasant surprise when we discovered our 4x4 buddies were two Aussies and an English girl. However, with ... read more

South America » Argentina » Salta » Salta February 11th 2014

After an exhausting 21 hour bus journey we finally arrived in the Northern Argentinian City of Salta. Upon arriving at our hostel, we did the only thing we could manage...sleep. A couple of hours later, feeling a little more refreshed, we strolled into the centre of this historic city to have a look around the main square and admire the colonial architecture the city is famed for. The centre piece of the square is a spectacular cathedral, which was holding a service just as we were strolling past. We poked our heads in to discover an incredibley opulent interior covered in gold. Just as we were leaving, a local lady approached us asking if we were catholic; as we were standing in a Catholic Church Rich felt obliged to say yes and the woman gave us ... read more

South America » Argentina » Mendoza » Mendoza February 7th 2014

Three hours late and after a four hour, 2am Chilean/Argentinian border crossing we finally arrived in Mendoza to to blues skies and beautiful scenic landscape. Once settled into our new temporary home, we headed off to book and organise the next couple of days. The next morning, with bus passes at the ready we hoped aboard a local bus and headed off to visit a few of the many wineries in this famous wine region...a kind of winery crawl I guess. 45 minutes later we reached our stop, jumped off and headed for Mr Hugo's bike hire. Map in hand and bike between our thighs, off we peddled to our first winery of the day; Rutini. After parking up outside we strolled through a room with enormous barrels of wine into a small rustic museum which ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago February 4th 2014

After arriving in Santiago at 7.30am, we were delighted to discover that our room at our hostel was ready and waiting for us. Exhausted, we made the most of this opportunity and had a quick nap before heading off to explore the city. First stop on our flyby tour was Cerro San Cristobel; a hill with a view point overlooking the city. Somewhat reminiscent of Rio's Corcovado, it even has a large statue just like Rio's Christ the Redeemer (but female)...who we kindly nicknamed Mrs Redeemer! A rickety 10 minute Funicular ride and we were at the top of the hill overlooking the city. Although not appearing very large from the bottom, it still gave stunning views across the city with the snow capped Andes in the distance. Two Empanadas later and we were heading back ... read more

South America » Chile » Araucanía » Pucón January 31st 2014

Our flight from Punta Arenas arrived in Puerto Montt, which left us with a five hour bus to take us to Pucon that same day. With all flight and bus connections going as smooth as clockwork, we were all chilled out in Pucon before we knew it. Sitting ominously in the shadow of the highly active Volcano Villarrica, from first impressions this picturesque Lake District town was everything we had hoped it would be. The previous day we had made a reservation to do what is most likely the towns most famous tour...to climb Volcano Villarrica. 8pm the night before we went for our boot and clothing fitting and for a basic briefing on what to bring and expect. Just as we thought we had left all the cold weather, next thing you know, we're getting ... read more

South America January 29th 2014

With absolutely no idea of our next destination (other than heading north), we sat down and googled away for inspiration and ideas. With a little help from a German fellow traveller, we decided to head to the Chilean Lake District town of Pucon, on the promise of lots of fun and adventure. Now to get there.... Once again faced with the option of a bum numbing bus journey of 40 hours (including two border crossings) or a far simpler albeit more expensive short (5hrs) bus and flight. We opted for the short bus and flight option and after a somewhat traumatic booking process we were sorted and on our way to Punta Arenas where we would catch our flight from. As we had to catch our flight from Punta Arenas anyway, we decided to stop over ... read more

South America » Chile » Magallanes » Puerto Natales January 24th 2014

Three days into our Patagonian endeavour, we arrived in the town of Peurto Natales, feeling somewhat under the weather. Whether it was something we picked up on our flight down or the acclimatisation to our new temperate surroundings, we were both sniffing and spluttering all over the place. With the prospect of 4 nights of camping in the harsh Patagonian wilderness ahead, the apprehension and second thoughts began to enter our minds. After deciding to go for a stroll around town, we stumbled upon a free briefing on what to do and expect when visiting the world famous Torres Del Paine national park; which included being told to expect 100km+ winds, rain, sun, hail and snow. With advice in hand we had a brief discussion to debate whether we were definitely up for this...10 minutes later ... read more

South America » Argentina » Santa Cruz » El Calafate January 21st 2014

With the prospect of either a 35 hour bus or the alternative option of a 4 hour flight, we decided to bite the bullet and fork out the extra money for the latter option. With torrential downpours heavy enough to bring the UK to a grounding halt, our flight from Buenos Aires domestic airport was delayed an hour. This did however bring some delight to the nervous flyer among us, and the opportunity was taken to buy a bottle of wine and swig it from a plastic bag; more reminiscent of boozy hobo down Edmonton Green than a tourist in an airport departure lounge! After a butt clenching, white knuckle roller coasters of a flight we arrived in the Patagonian town of El Calafate. The number one attraction in the area is the Perito Merino glacier, ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires January 18th 2014

Another day, another bus. This time it was a 17 hour overnight to Buenos Aires. After a surprisingly good nights sleep we arrived in Buenos Aires around midday bright eyed and bush tailed; that didn't last for long. With 40 degree heat and nowhere to stay, it wasn't long before we were wandering around the streets of Palermo in dire need of a place to cool down. Not too much later we decided to splash out and treat ourselves to a hotel...well kinda, it was pretty basic and cheaper than most hostels! Once settled in, we took a wander around the immediate area, had a bite to eat then headed back for an early night. After treating ourselves to a monster lay in (8:30am), we were up for a quick brekkie and out the door. First ... read more

After 16 hours of wafts of chemical toilet and very little sleep, we arrived in the city of Foz Do Iguacu tired and a little grumpy. After the initial confusion of how to work the busses in town and a few wrong turns later we arrived at our base for the Brazilian side of the falls; Favela chic. We definitely understood the 'Favela' side of the name but couldn't quite work out the 'chic' part. It was pretty basic but what more can you expect for £11 a night including breakfast in Brazil?! We dumped out bags and off we headed to one of the top things to do on our trip...the mighty Iguazu falls! With the falls forming the border between Argentina and Brazil, the falls can be viewed from both countries, with both sides ... read more
