Another day, another bus. This time it was a 17 hour overnight to Buenos Aires. After a surprisingly good nights sleep we arrived in Buenos Aires around midday bright eyed and bush tailed; that didn't last for long. With 40 degree heat and nowhere to stay, it wasn't long before we were wandering around the streets of Palermo in dire need of a place to cool down. Not too much later we decided to splash out and treat ourselves to a hotel...well kinda, it was pretty basic and cheaper than most hostels! Once settled in, we took a wander around the immediate area, had a bite to eat then headed back for an early night.
After treating ourselves to a monster lay in (8:30am), we were up for a quick brekkie and out the door. First stop; Cementerio de la Recoleta aka a pimped out grave yard for the who's who of local society. We arrived just in time for a free guided tour which turned out to be in Spanish only, so instead of strolling around nodding along to someone in which we had no idea what they were saying, we decided to take a stroll on our own.
With tombs big enough to house whole families, stairs leading to basements and coffins clearly on display it was somewhat a bizarre but intriguing experience...opulence even the Arabs would be envious of! After a short while we headed off to Plaza Dorrengo in San Telmo, a Sunday market which promised all sorts antiques. It really did have everything; old random keys to who knows what to vintage taps to clothes, it really did have everything...unfortunately nothing that tickled our fancy enough to hand over a Peso or two.
Brazil has its Caprianha's, Colombia has its coke, Ecuador has its Panama and Argentina has its steaks! So how could we leave without sampling some of what they have to offer at one of their most famous Parrilla's. With bellies rumbling, we headed of to La Cabrera to get stuck in. With a rather simplistic exterior this restaurant had charm, friendly faces and a continual buzz about it. Two delicious filet steaks, chips, salad and a bottle of wine later, we were done! "Stick a fork in me" Rich uttered to Gem, she slurred something back to tune of "me too!". Yum!
Our final day in BA, we took a
slightly less than successful trip around the shopping district of Palermo in search of what seamed like the holy grail of dresses...we never did find it! Following that, we went for a walk around a couple of the many parks and lakes in the area before heading back to the hotel ahead of our last night in BA. As this was already proving to be a bit of a pricey few days, we thought "what the hell!" and went all out, booked a Tango show at the well renowned Cafe Tortoni for a night of hip shaking action. Singing, dancing, acting(ish) and guessing what they were saying and laughing along (often unsure of the joke). It was a great way to wrap up our short but sweet stop in Buenos Aires and a goodbye to civilisation as we know it for a while.
Next stop, Patagonia!
